  1. I wouldn't watch any of these three unless there was NOTHING on. But of the three, soccer is probably the most pleasant to watch, simply because there are no commercial timeouts. One of the most annoying things for me is the TD - commercial - kickoff - commercial - three&out/punt - commercial string. Each of those commercial breaks are 90 seconds, minimum, and most times they're two minutes apiece. That'll happen a couple of times a game, easy. It's brutal, especially when they run the same commercials each break. I've golfed, so I have a slight interest in it, but really.... meh. And tennis is a giant yawn.
  2. Considering the fact that this blog was written by a "Dr Drunkenstein," and the Texas fan "Dr Drunkenstein" from Tiger Droppings lists his location as Washington, DC and our friend "Machine from 8MM" posts from Annapolis, I'd say you're most likely right.
  3. This isn't rocket science. Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State and Missouri are staring down the barrel of conference irrelevance if they lose the Big XII. Right now the Big XII is hanging on to AQ status by the simple fact that Texas has not decided to go Independent. Financially that's a viable possibility, and a decision that Texas will make if it benefits them, just like every other school. So the fact that these schools vote in lockstep with Texas does not indicate agreement, but rather lack of choice. This point is further illustrated by the fact that so many of the fundamental votes in the Big XII have benefited Texas and their interests. The only schools who will, without question, land on their feet if Texas pulls out are Oklahoma and Texas A&M. Tech, Baylor and the North schools are likely screwed. Missouri will not be joining the Big Ten, and what AQ conference is going to bring in Iowa State or Kansas State? Kansas has an outside shot at an AQ conference due simply to their basketball team, but that's hard say. The Texas schools are tied at the hip by their legislature. What's so hard to understand about this?
  4. Oh no, absolutely not. I would consider Colorado to the Pac-12 a lateral move, if all things had remained equal. The Big XII with Nebraska and Colorado, intact, was a fine conference that made its schools good money, gave them a national stage on which to perform, and gave them the opportunity to go to a BCS game whenever they had a good team. They have the exact same chances in the Pac-12 as they did last year. However, all things are not equal. The Big XII is a wounded beast and many of their wounds are self-inflicted (see: complicity with Texas). Those wounds will likely fester rather than heal, with Texas always wanting to increase their slice of the pie, often at the expense of their conference mates. Because of this, Colorado's move to the Pac-12 was not only a big move, but a brilliant move for the Buffs. Say what you will about their coaches and coaching tactics over the past couple of decades, and their administration's frequent bungling, and their fans asshattery, and.... well, I could go on and on. Say what you will about all of that, the preemptive strike launched by Colorado last year, when it appeared to be a fait accompli that Texas would lead an emigration of half the conference to the Pac-10, then the Texas legislature threw a hissy fit and it looked like Colorado was getting stiffed in favor of Baylor, saved their program from irrelevance. Colorado now finds themselves in a stable, fair-play conference, with whom they already have strong ties (the majority of CU's non-resident students are Californians). They have a spiffy new TV deal, solid income, and a secure future and at the same time they freed themselves from the tyranny of the Big XII and Texas' greed. That is a monumental win. But. That is not nearly as great of a Win as Nebraska's. Nebraska's move to the Big Ten is the kind of move that will set the stage for the next 100 years of school growth. It sets us up amongst academic institutions with whom we are not peers - but soon will be. Academically Nebraska is like The Little Engine That Could - always trying, but never quite getting up that hill. The AAU ouster was the perfect example of how we're viewed by the rest of academia. We are not respected because we are, at best, a middling school. But with the sharing of research, top-tier students, and especially the CIC, expect Nebraska's prestige in the academic world to grow steadily for the next two decades and beyond. While Colorado saved their athletic program, Nebraska saved the entirety of its institution. Moving to the Big Ten also sets us up with the preeminent conference-owned TV network, and it places us among more of the nation's elite football teams than we had ever rubbed shoulders with before. With some small regret we leave Oklahoma behind, but that ship had long since sailed. We replace OU and Texas with Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State, three of the most storied football programs in the game. That is a definite upgrade. Add to that Wisconsin, Michigan State and Iowa, and occasionally Northwestern and Purdue, and we have a home in a very respectable football conference. As time rolls on and we see the ever-increasing reach of Texas Athletics into the pocketbooks of the remainders of the Big XII, the stability and equanimity we have gained in the Big Ten will become more and more apparent. While I anticipate some bumps in the road - the honeymoon phase can't last forever - overall our arrival in the Big Ten should usher in what we may look back upon in 50 years as the Golden Age of the University of Nebraska.
  5. +1 to both 307 and the Captain. I agree with 307 and I laughed at Captain's post.
  6. The fact that he's not enrolling in class speaks volumes.
  7. This is 100% speculation, but maybe Gilmore pulled some strings to have USC host him, never intending to bring him in, but just to improve his reputation. Kind of, "USC is looking at him? Maybe I'd better take a second look..." I would imagine after his USC tryout we'll read very good things about Cody, but they won't have him transfer.
  8. Valid point. Who, outside of Nebraska, actually heard of Nebraska before 1996??? You mean aside from Lewis and Clark, right?
  9. More of Suh's off-season exploits. Looks like Suh and Cody Glenn took part in the Gumball 3000. Article and video: LINK <----- rest of the article LINK <----- video of Suh and Glenn
  10. to Joe Schad for providing Cody's passing stats. As if those are the only measurables for a QB. Why don't people who cover college football for a living ever learn that running QBs can be winners at this level? Passing is not the only stat that matters for college QBs. Cody will make his living with his legs, not his arm. He's not a passing QB, per se.
  11. To even further illustrate the point, the folks in BOLD are from states we've never been in a conference with. Presuming the theory that "Nebraska can't recruit from Texas when they aren't in a Texas conference" is true, we shouldn't have the seven players in bold at all. The "same conference for recruiting" thing is a myth. Always has been.
  12. Maybe, just maybe, this will teach ESPN to make a more secure poll. This was just a lazy effort, too easily hackable by bots.
  13. That house is maybe 15 feet from Kappa Kappa Gamma, a large sorority. The best-looking girl from my high school was a KKG when I was at UNL.
  14. I can tell you where NOT to go. Don't go to Save Mart at 11th & Cornhusker. That place is a dive. Wait - is this serious?
  15. I admit I rolled my eyes a bit when I saw this thread title, but I have to say that this sounds like a really good idea. I don't think it should be called "Caylee's Law," though. I believe the mom killed her, but in the absence of a conviction, it's too presumptive to name the law after someone else's daughter. It also presumes guilt which, while I think most everyone thinks the mom is guilty, is not fair.
  16. Theta Chi. 626 N 16th Street, right next to Kappa Kappa Gamma. They lost their charter, though. It was always a small house, and a few years after my time there it closed down. Phi Mu owns the house now. We had plenty of girls at the house all the time, but not because we were so cool or because of the free beer. It was pretty laid back. I think the girls showed up because it was a pretty safe environment, unlike a lot of houses where the guys were all predators. I mean, we were predators, too. But we were nice predators.
  17. I think we have a puncher's chance. Depends on what the offense does. I'd like to know what Auburn's odds were this time last year. I know they started the season ranked quite low.
  18. The North Bottoms is a low-land region roughly bordered by the railroad tracks just north of Memorial Stadium on the south, I-180 on the west, Military Road on the north and the Devaney Center on the East. Tons of students live there, and as you wander through there you'll see parties and cookouts everywhere.
  19. It's just your basic "us vs. them" mentality. Humans are wired for this (as are other animals), so just about any arbitrary groups you put together will develop this mentality over time. You can even split the groups, mix the members and make two entirely new groups, and eventually you'll have "us vs. them" again. You see this in sports fandom, in politics, in nationalism, in.... everything. I pledged a really, really down-to-earth fraternity. Great guys, but no different than any guy in a dorm room. Same people, different living arrangements. That's it.
  20. Just noticed that Ubben wrote yet another blog about Nebrsaka. You'd think he'd let it go by now, but I think we're going to be a regular feature there. Don't give him the clicks. It's a dumb blog.

ESPN's recruiting guy says we'll still have a strong presence in Texas. Ubbs tries to get him to say we won't. He sticks to his guns. The end.

Ubben? Oh, you mean that little pointy headed crap spewing B12 guy.

  21. Lots on east side, too. Lots of what?
  22. There are several hotspots for tailgating around the stadium, but because of its location there aren't any huge parking lots available, so the tailgating is broken up quite a bit. The best area is to the west of the stadium, under the I-180 bridge. There are tons of tailgates, music, food and lots of red cups. Other places are in the North Bottoms, an area to the north of the stadium and the Indian Center at 10th & Military where there's plenty of room and plenty of grilling.
