  1. I'm going on a ski trip over the break and I've never been skiing or snowboarding. Any recommendations from some of the more alpine members as far as goggles, helmets, gloves? Obviously I don't want to drop a lot of money on first time equipment as I probably won't be going regularly. Should I rent a helmet/goggles or buy my own?

What Red Five said. Take the half day lesson. You'll figure out how to slow down, turn and stop much better that way and it can get pretty interesting if you can't do those 3 things. Also make sure you can do them well before you up your game to blue or black slopes. I got cocky my first day, thought I had it all figured out and jumped up to an intermediate right away. Bad idea in icy hard pack conditions when you can't control yourself yet. I had a pretty spectacular wipe out at about 45 mph. I'm still too scared to even think about the day my "friends" took me up to peak 10 at Breckenridge and failed to tell me the only way down was black.

Yeah, the lady and I are probably going to take some lessons here in Michigan Thursday or Friday, and maybe get one more practice session in before we leave New Years weekend.

Im going to Steamboat in January. Cant wait.  Havent been there for 18 years. I always rent. But i only go once a year at most and renting is pretty cheap. Lodging(if you want a good ski in/out) and lift tix are the most expensive parts. But good thing with ski in/out is you can save money by not eating on the mountain. Ive been skiing for 35 years. Dont snowboard. I hate those things, all they do is push snow into big piles and leave slick spots all over the mountain. Sorry snowboarders, not a fan.
