  1. Can a hammer and nail be used to make a pilot hole if the screw is small?

      Just the dry wall. I had a small space to work with and it doesn't need to hold much weight. I suppose I should've looked for it just in case.

      I don't think you even need a pilot hole for drywall since it's so soft.

      Yes. drywall will hold very little and just the tension from pulling the knife would cause them to release the screw. Ideally you should use the 2x4 stud but if not at least use a moly that expands and catches the back side of the drywall after it is pushed through the hole.
