Yes, but they are losing their hold on college sports.  They are just stepping aside & letting this s#!t happen.  Lightly regulated NIL & lawsuits to supersede regulations.  College sports are moving toward professional were money buys championships & no regulating body.

It doesn't sound like you watch much professional sports.  Money also does not buy championships these days, and it is pretty hilarious watching teams still try to do that.

It's not though. People say that and the Denver Nuggets and Texas Rangers just won for the first time in forever/ever.  The Arizona Diamondbacks were in the world series.  The Dodgers spend money, they've only won a short season Covid championship in the last 35 years.  The Mets blew everyone away in payroll and missed the playoffs entirely last year.  It doesn't buy championships, and it isn't the same team winning every year.   That happens way more in college football actually, which is what you are comparing this to.

Rangers were #9 in payroll.  The top three didn't even make the playoffs.  Tampa Bay had the second-best record in the AL with the #28 payroll.

 

Denver was #8 in payroll.  Sacramento and Memphis had the second- and third-best records in the West with the #23 and #26 payrolls.

Long time Rangers fan here. We have thrown money around for years and nothing. Built new stadiums, signed big time players to monster contracts.....nothing. Only happened when they finally decided to put a good skipper in charge. It has been BRUTAL!!

I would add, as much as money does buy championships (or helps to get them), that has always been the case with college football. It was just less direct. The teams with money had more and better facilities, food, clothing, tutoring, etc., that they could offer the players. The programs with $ did everything they could except give the players cash. Cash is a step up from that, but it's not like the playing field was even.

And in fact, I would say in college football things were more lopsided than in the NFL. It just didn't involve player salaries.
