Screwed

WE just got hosed by the ACC officiating crew.

Suh got flagged for a late hit. It was not a late hit, Suh got pushed into the play. VT punts after that stop.

My 2 cents worth. Were the calls stupid at the end of the game, YES. Did it screw us out of a win, maybe...and that's a small maybe. Arm tackles, lack of a secondary and Joe playing the worst game i've ever seen him play is what really screwed us. Ghange the title of this forum to "piss poor penalty calls" and you got my vote.

why we lost:

-Got punched in the mouth early with the blocked punt with a safety.

-Bonehead interception inside 10 yard line.

-Joe Ganz had a sub-par night missing receivers all game long

-NU might having one of the most over-hyped, over-rated O-Lines in college football.

-A poor running game by Nebraska. A lot to do with having a bad O-Line but questionable decision making by the coaching staff about which RB is on the field.

-Nebraska giving up almost 30+ yards every time Tech returned punts. NU lost the field position battles.

- cornerbacks and safetys who fell asleep as if they were mesmerized by Tyrod Taylor and they let receivers just blow right past them.

- and of course, heavy penalties late in the game.

This team needs a lot of work. More than most of us had thought.

I'll agree... the late hit on Suh was questionable at the end. But what about the roughing the kicker on them... Last I checked when I guy from the punting team throws a guy from the receiving team into the punter, it's not roughing the kicker. Just trying to bring up the point that the refs made sh**ty calls both ways, plus they had missed some earlier late hit calls on the skers as well. It was mistakes the cost the Huskers the game, as previously mentioned in this thread.

Your right...

They missed a boatload of holding calls too.

BRI is right to . Take care of your business and it wont come down to those calls.

Still stings though.

What's wrong with a few drunken tireades over the officiating? We all pretty much know our offense laid an egg, we had terrible special teams coverage and for some reason our DEs feel the need to abandon their outside contain responsibilities.....that's no fun to talk about!

As far as Suh's hit goes...meh, he was late, but it certainly wasn't a vicious cheap shot or anything, I think it would have been a good no call, but it wasn't and he was flagged. Life goes on. I have to wonder what Dr. Tom will say to Bo about showing your displeasure to the refs.

"Uh, Bo..

As far as changing the Ref's minds...Not gonna happen."

"As a tool to get your team fired up"?

"Just make sure there's enough time left to reap the bennefits".

i don't normally agree with statements and accusations like this...but I agree... three 15 yarders in like 2 min...come on...we did get screwed. Did anyone notice the play clock towards the end?!?!

Not only the jacked up clock, but did you see the way the measured? They set the stick and then placed the ball... even though it went in our favor it proves those refs were NOT on the level. I bet they got police escorts after the game... I felt like stabbing one of them with my shoe!! :rant

Just like a couple weeks ago when a player got flagged for throwing the ball in the air after a touchdown.

A couple things about this, 1. suh was already falling and was pushed by VT anyways, 2. flagging Bo was just ridiculous. Just like in basketball for the most part inconsequential penalties shouldn't be called near the end of the game that are going to decide it one way or the other, you need to just let the teams play it out.

In the interest of full disclosure, although my grandfather, both my parents, my aunt and one brother all attended UNL and I have rooted for them as my "backup team" for 40 years (I graduated from the U S Naval Academy, which doesn't win all that much in football), my daughter currently attends Virginia Tech.

That being said:

I can't comment on the Bo call, since I didn't hear what was said between him and refs leading up to the call.

On the Suh call, however, I have watched my Tivo of the play in slo-mo several times, and the following things are obvious:

1. No one pushed Suh; there was no VT player near enough to him to have touched him, let alone pushed him. He jumped on the VT quarterback of his own accord.

2. When Suh left his feet, he (Suh) was about 1 yard from the sidelines;

2. At the moment that Suh left his feet, the VT quarterback was lying on his back about 1 yard out of bounds.

I might be able to argue that big calls like this shouldn't be made with the game on the line; i.e., the "NBA rule" against big calls in the final moments of a game. However, it is unhappily obvious that Suh made a totally unnecessary and boneheaded play that is a textbook example of "Unnecessary roughness". In most circumstances, he would have been lucky to have gotten away with it, and last night, he wasn't so lucky.

Doesnt matter if he was shoved or not... you cannot touch the kicker, period.

People need to quit blaming the officials, or a couple of deserved penalties, or the wind, or karma, or whatever else for the loss. Nebraska was playing a good football team with big, strong, fast, well-coached players. Nebraska played the first 3 quarters of the game trying to adjust to the speed and strength of VT's players. They also, quite frankly, looked intimidated by VT.

But Nebraska is also well coached, at least much better than before. They are still learning. And most importantly, they did not quit. Callahan had 4 years to install his NFL "me first, I don't care about the rest of it" attitude. At least that is disappearing.

As for me, I am encouraged by what I watched. I think that, somewhere down the line, Nebraska is going to beat a team that they "aren't supposed to". Then watch out, because the players will start to really believe in themselves. When a team feels like they will win, rather than hope to win, they become really dangerous.

I think the team is about on schedule. They played hard to end, they didn't quit when it would have easy to do so, they played pretty good run D until they got worn down, they are coached with passion and they played with passion. Four games into a new era, I think this is pretty good.

Since I live on the East coast, I haven't seen many NU games the last few years, but the ones I saw often made me feel embarrassed for Nebraska. The players often seemed confused about assignments, especially on offense, and they played like they were too worried about making mistakes to execute cleanly. The coaching seemed clinical, passionless and overly complicated.

I've always believed the best thing that can be said about a team is that its performance exceeds its talent. I think that was true of NU last night, whereas in the last few years, exactly the opposite seemed to be the case. Callahan seemed to take good players and form a mediocre (or worse) team.

To poor even more sadness on the NU case, I attended the VT vs. Ohio U. game last year. Ohio U. is coached by Frank Solich, of course. That Ohio U. had that same good team quality I mentioned; it was a far better team than the quality of its players would lead one to expect. While I'm glad NU has found a good new coach, I still believe it had a quality coach in Solich to start with.

Absolutely correct. The refs may have cost us a chance at a late comeback, but we lost the game for EXACTLY the reasons you just listed! Couldn't have summed it up better myself.
