Guys Get Over It.

Why is Ekeler "leaving" and not leaving. Was he "forced" to "leave" or "asked" to "leave". Do you "know" "something" that the rest of us don't?

Lots of rumors as to why he was asked to leave. The one I've heard most and probably makes as much sense has to do with the fact that he walked a very fine line on recruiting ethics. I caught one blip on a board that was there for about 5 minutes stating an assistant coach could land NU in hot water and a high profile recruit might not be eligible but it was yanked down quick. I think it also had a booster involvement because UNL issued a reminder about recruiting again.

Here was the email that was sent.

NU Boosters, Alumni and Athletic Representatives Recruiting Guidelines

What Defines Recruiting?

Recruiting is any solicitation of a prospect or a prospect’s family member (or legal guardian) by a University of Nebraska staff member or athletic booster, for the purpose of securing the prospect’s enrollment and ultimate participation in the University of Nebraska intercollegiate athletic programs.

Who is a Prospective Student-Athlete?

A prospective student-athlete is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade or above, including students in prep schools and junior colleges as well as students who have officially withdrawn from a four-year institution and plan to transfer to another collegiate institution. In addition, a student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospective student-athlete if the institution or a booster provides the individual or the individual's relatives or friends with any financial assistance or benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students in general. A good rule of thumb is to treat ALL STUDENTS as prospects.

General Recruiting Guidelines for Boosters/Alumni/Representatives of Athletics Interests

• Boosters are not allowed to contact a prospect in an attempt to recruit or encourage attendance at the University of Nebraska.

o Types of prohibited contacts include, but are not limited to:

On-campus or Off-campus face-to-face conversation with prospect or the prospect’s relatives

Any form of written correspondence; and/or

Telephone calls to a prospect, the prospect’s relatives or coaches

• Boosters are not allowed to invite a prospect or the prospect’s relatives to any booster function or alumni event.

• Boosters are not allowed to provide a prospect or the prospect’s relatives with free or reduced rate transportation, meals, lodging, gifts, entertainment or expenses for any type of service.

• Boosters may send information (e.g., news articles, game programs, etc.) concerning a prospective student-athlete to the appropriate coaching staff.

• Boosters may attend high school and community college events, provided they do not contact prospective student-athletes, their families, coaches, counselors or high school administrators in an attempt to recruit the prospect.

• Boosters may continue pre-established friendships with prospects, their parents and relatives provided that the contact with these individuals is not arranged by a Nebraska coaching staff member, nor is the contact an attempt to recruit the prospect.

• Boosters may attend public events (e.g., banquet, fundraising event, or dinner) at which prospects are in attendance. However, NO contact or attempt should be made to recruit the prospect, including contact with the prospect’s parents, relatives or coaches.

• Boosters may not e-mail or post messages on a prospective student-athlete’s MySpace, Facebook or similar website encouraging attendance at the University of Nebraska.

• Boosters may not obtain film/videotape or transcripts from a prospective student-athlete’s educational institution in an effort to evaluate the prospect’s academic eligibility or athletics ability.

The guidelines above are not exhaustive. Any questions or concerns related to recruiting or any other topic should be directed to the Athletic Compliance Office at (402)472-2042.

ASK BEFORE YOU ACT!

I actually heard that Ekeler was leaving back in September after a certain LB broke his leg and it was out in the media before his parents were told by Bo. I heard that Ek was the leak and that Bo told him that he was to find himself employment following the season or he would be asked to leave. My source also said the same would be true of Watson, but I am starting to believe he was wrong on the Watson part. I never said anything because I knew how this board hated rumors. And that has become even more apparent in the last month (and I happen to hate rumors as well).

That leak wasn't Ek. It was from a spectator that was there watching the practice as a guest. He couldn't wait to tell everyone first and be a big shot. Thats why practice was shut down to all people who weren't a player or coach. Well....everyone except a couple big check writers that weren't talking to anyone. I do remember hearing he might have been a guest of Eks that day but it was someone that all the coaches knew and had access to the program up intil that point.

Ek was actually in the dog house last year for something else.

I may disagree with the idea of keeping Watson around but I can see why they would want to keep him around. What I do have a problem with is the receivers coach still being on staff. He's bad and he isn't developing any of the talent we're getting. I realize were not getting the very top-tier receiving talent but we've got a serious problem with balls being dropped. Guys like Chris Brooks who are getting looks in the NFL barely saw the field only further my opinion of Gilmore.

I think OP is correct about this. But we need something to happen on that side of the ball. Whether it's Watson having some sort of offensive epiphany, Watson getting fired, etc, something has to happen

Yeah....

I can't imagine Bo thinking "Oh hell, another year or two of 3 & outs won't really matter so why change anything?" He has to know full well we need a BIG change on that side of the ball.

He'll pony up. He's just doing the honorable thing with letting SW apply for 5,000 positions until he finally gets one. Surely sooner or later he'll find a bottom feeder somewhere that will take him.

I would also add that the walkon senior (forget his name brookmeir?) steps in after Niles gets injured and catches a few passes. Suddenly he's playing in the bowl game along with Niles. So either the switch just turned on at the perfect time or this kid should've been on the field throughout the season.

That's the problem. Why didn't Watson or Bo use Broekmeir more often.

I think we have offensive coaching issues on the line, receiving, and fixing the black hole that is Martinez.

Bo needs to chill out with all the emotion and quit coaching his offense like you coach a defense. Shouting and yelling and getting all jacked up works great for linebackers......not a cocky, freshman QB. He needs to be more versitile, collected, and concentrate on fixing all the penalties and blown game-changing plays.

I don't necessarily know if getting rid of Watson will fix anything until Bo understands how costly all the penalties are and how we seem to self-implode and destroy ourselves in clutch situations. That is his responsibility.

The disappointing thing is that Watson obviously under-utilized Broekmeir, can't get Martinez to make any smart decisions and realize this isn't his high school team. Bo's "I don't care" attitude was great when he first came in, but we need an ambassador. We need someone who is not afraid to maybe hurt someone's feelings and say "This isn't working." We need someone who can control his emotions better.

I'm not saying get rid of Bo, I'm just saying Bo needs to step it up and fix the problems. Fire Watson? Maybe. Get the Huskers to stop making so many damn mistakes and blowing games? Yes.

Not one of the teams that beat us this year had to work for their win. They just had to sit back, play conservative and wait for NU to hand it over....and I think they knew it all along.
