Husker Baseball Recruiting Thread

Can officially express my disappointment. A close family friend of mine went the JUCO route last year after a stellar high school career in OK that didn't garner the type of top tier offers he was after (not at all grades related - he wanted to stay close to home and get the offers without wasting a year of eligibility transferring).

He went to a JUCO in OK, hit .470+ and was top 10 in the country in HRs. Offers blew up, understandably. Almost his whole family is from Nebraska - aunt and uncle in Omaha, aunt and uncle in Blair, and grandparents in Sioux City. Was very interested in playing baseball here, but Erstad and staff slow played him the whole way. Told him they'd be interested if he went back to JUCO and spent another year getting ready.

Today, he starts at 3B for South Carolina Gamecocks. Very happy for him, just wish Nebraska would have given him the time of day.

Does anyone know how many current ballplayers are walk ons and how many walk ons they have gotten rid of the last couple years? and maybe who exactly are the walk ons?

It's really tough to know how many guys are "walk-ons" because of the limited number of scholarships that are available to the baseball team (11.7 schollies is the max for D-1).. I don't think there are a lot (if any) of full scholarship players on the baseball team, so the vast majority of the guys pay for 50-100% of their college costs.

Closer to half scholarships

Right, they can split the 11.7 scholarships among 30 players, so most guys are getting 1/4 to 1/2 scholarships, with a number of guys getting no assistance.

So nobody really knows exactly how many walk ons are on the team?

It's pretty much impossible to know, unless you have access to the players' tuition bill.
