Texas Tech opposes playing on the LHN

Recommended Posts

How badly do Big 12 schools that aren't located in Austin, Texas, want to keep their games off of the Longhorn Network? So badly that they would consider playing only 11 games in 2012 rather than be on it. That's what Texas Tech is reportedly considering according to RedRaiderSports.com. It seems the school is thinking about cancelling its game against Texas State after finding out it might be broadcast on the network. Tech learned of this possibility several days ago, and according to the source, is "adamantly opposed to playing on the Longhorn Network" and is "putting serious consideration into canceling the game and playing an 11 game schedule" this fall. "We are extremely disappointed," the source told RRS. "Our hope is that the Texas State game will be played on a primary ESPN platform."

This clearly illustrates their immense displeasure at the prospect of having their game aired on the Longhorn Network.

Texas Tech doesn't have a choice. It's a road game for them and therefore they have no say on which network it airs on. And if they decide to cancel the game then that's extremely bush league. If Texas Tech decided to air one of their home games against an FCS team or low level BCS conference game on the Internet and charge $5 or $10 to watch the game then should that team be mad and want to cancel the game? It's ridiculous how they are acting. Just play the game and stop being a bunch of babies about LHN.

Long term, though, Tech playing on LWN potentially helps a rival school get their over-priced, worthless network into more homes, which helps improve the chances that ESPN doesn't just give up on the damn thing.

It would be one thing if it were, say, being broadcast on Fox and Tech is crying foul because they don't care for Fox for whatever reason. But this is a network whose sole purpose is to inflate the already large piles of dirty, ill-gotten money that Deloss Dodds already swims in (Scrooge McDuck-style) on a daily basis. Can't say I fault Texas Tech for that.

If it helps, LAHuskerFan, just take out Texas Tech, and put Nebraska in that same position. Even you would have to admit that the whole damn board (not to mention Husker Nation) would be in Reddit/4Chan mode, marching on Austin, ready to burn their campus and AD to the ground if it were discovered that a live Nebraska game not involving Texas was going to be airing on the LWN, and the LWN only.

If Tech does follow through on this, I do have to say I would be impressed, and any bad press will help hasten the demise of the LWN.

Question: If a game is aired on LWN, does any body see it?

Oh, yeah, Tech is screwed:

But will Tech actually have to cancel the game? A report from Chip Brown of Texas Rivals affiliate Orangebloods Friday morning stated that the LHN and ESPN will not "pursue" airing the game on the LHN, saving the WAC and the Bobcats from having to make the decision in the first place.

So Chip O'Bevo just confirmed that UTerus is going hard to get the game on LWN.

So it would be ok for the Big 10 Network to televise one of Alabama's non-conference road games?

Okay, that's way off base. Longhorn Network has a deal with Texas State/WAC to broadcast a home football game and if Alabama played at one of the Big Ten schools stadiums and ABC or ESPN didn't pick up the game then BTN would air the game as allowed in the TV contracts. It's not very complicated. When Nebraska plays at UCLA this year, that game could of been on the Pac-12 Network. Texas Tech gives up any TV rights when they go play a game on the road. I don't see the big deal about this. And anyone that hates on LHN is just jealous. I would love to have a network devoted just to the University of Nebraska. Enough already. Texas Tech bitching about what network they are playing on is ridiculous. They shouldn't have scheduled an away game with them if they wanted a say so in what network aired the game.

No, it's the same scenario. Nebraska @ UCLA on PAC 12 network and Alabama @ Big 10 school on Big ten network still involves a team from the respectable conference. This Texas Tech situation has nothing to do with the University of Texas, hence, there should be not problem with Tech not wanting their game aired on the network of a rival school. Even if the LHN has rights to the "state of Texas" it is out of line by calling it the Longhorn network. It shouldve been called the Texas Sports network in that case. So in ending, yes, it is the same as the BTN going to televise an Alabama game against a non-Big 10 team. If tech was playing @ Texas and none of the other major networks picked it up, then yes, it would not be an issue. Can't blame tech on this one.

LWN. lol +1

As for TT vs. the LWN, I'm glad to see them speak out. The Whorns need to find out that they can't impose their will on the rest of college football.
