4skers89
Martinez 2012-16 fumbles (leads nations) Martinez 2011-13 fumbles (leads nation) Martinez 2010-16 fumbles (leads nation) http://www.teamranki...er-stat/fumbles If Taylor continues this trend, he would lead the nation for 4 years in a row. Not that I'm a statistician or anything, but has any college player led the nation in a single stat for 4 years in a row? So what is the cure for fumblitist? any suggestions. Each time he runs in traffic I have to hold my breath -- As a freshman and soph - each time he threw a pass I had to hold my breath. He's improved his passing. Maybe this summer he hires a RB specialist to help him wt his fumble issue. He needs to hit the weight room and develop bicep and forearm strength in the offseason. I remember watching a fumble in the Wiscy game where the defender tugged at Taylor's arm and bloop, out comes the ball. Scott Frost wasn't too big when he transferred but by the time he graduated you could see he put in some serious time in the weight room. It didn't seem to effect his passing accuracy either. That should eliminate most of the fumbles from contact. Fumbles when executing the zone read will always be a problem and will only get cleaned up through repetition. I hope he goes back to the Manning academy and the QB coach to continue his improvement rather than spend time with a RB specialist. Quote Link to comment

Taylor just doesn't always tuck the ball - and he gets blindsided frequently. And he almost always runs w/ the ball in his right arm. (which is a coaching issue) He's not as aware of what's around him when he's running. Ball should already be tucked in these pics. (you can find 100 others where it is tucked - but he's just not as consistent w/ it as he needs to be). Also, that's some forearm strength in the first one if you ask me.... Quote Link to comment
jamrinelli
B-b-b-ut giving up 63 points a game is BECKS FAULT DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In all the games we lost, we scored more than enough points to win the game had the defense played a normal game, a defense which in 11 games (excluding the two monumental blowouts) allowed 18.9 PPG. Since when is averaging 35 points a game in three losses enough points to win a game???? I just don't understand what people want from Beck. I understand that Martinez has a hard time holding onto the ball. But what else is his fault in those three losses? I will say that in the OSU game he should have stuck with the run instead of opting for the pass. We had them until we changed the game plan. Quote Link to comment

I agree that he needs to learn to tuck the ball. I think that has to do with him being a young QB (4 years). What amazes me in these pics is that he hasn't blown out a knee with how high above the knee his knee pads are..... Quote Link to comment
ZRod
Wow, talk about completely missing the point of the post. Especially the part where I said our defense was awful. It's not obvious but my post was laced with sarcasm. Turnovers are just one of the many anomalies of this team. You can't specifically blame anyone because everyone has been a culprit, and if you watched close in the CCG you can't even really blame the player himself because on Taylor's fumble he had two hands on the ball and it still came out. On a few early INTs this year it was miss communication on coverages and routes. It's seriously like they are cursed or something. I almost wonder if, like my dad has been harping, they need to use new balls. Most of the ones we use have the stripes almost completely worn off and a used ball tends to be a little slicker. Stupid I know but that's probably the only thing the coaches haven't tried yet. Assuming they really have harped on it in practice. Quote Link to comment
ZRod
Pretty sure that's a horse collar, bet that wasn't called... Somebody had to say it. Quote Link to comment

Each time he runs in traffic I have to hold my breath -- As a freshman and soph - each time he threw a pass I had to hold my breath. He's improved his passing. Maybe this summer he hires a RB specialist to help him wt his fumble issue. IMO, his biggest problem is his history. Teams know how many times he fumbles and specifically target this. No different than a DC seeing a safety who continually bites on a double move. They go after him time and time again. Same with Martinez. D goes after the ball. I think he tucks the ball well. One thing that would help would be to also "cover the ball with his body". Prior to contact, lower your shoulders and bend at the waist to allow your body and elbows to offer more protection to the ball instead of in one arm only standing up straight. Getting blindsided doesn't help. I would also have him work with Brown and the RB's during position drills to learn how to "run through" tackles. Again goes to lowering the body and tucking the ball into the body, not the side with an just an elbow. For the past 3 years, NU has been horrible with ball control. Coaches need to make this a PRIORITY. This has been beat to death, but prior to the CCG, fumbles (not INT's) accounted for approximetly 44% of our opponents points. No team could win with these stats. Throw in INT's, poor special teams play (punts and returns) and it is amazing that we won 10 games. Not a huge fan of Beck. Yet. We have improved dramatically as evidenced by our record, rankings and statistics. I would just like more consistency, more use of all of our guys (primarily RB's) and develop a true identity. All agree that our pass blocking is far more suspect than our run blocking. I would love to see our identity go back to more power with PA passes. Our line has issues trying to get Martinez time to really go deep (although some of his better passes) and timing routes are off as he often is running for his life. I like the zone read and figure we could still run it as an element of our power sets. Unsure if we have the OL really capable of running a true "spread" O. Quote Link to comment
