How bad do you want Tressel

Recommended Posts

I would be careful with Jim Tressel for several reasons but also probably give the go ahead if they still feel he has it:

1.His first season at Ohio State was extremely poor for the talent they had. It was before he began with the boosters "slush fund" gift system for "acheiving" players. This is how he got S Mike Doss to come back for his Senior year and what Tressel promised for better efforts which clearly started translating next season. This "gift" system he eventually got caught lying about, was only the tip of the iceberg. It was as bad as USC or any SEC team. Ohio State got off light in comparison. I am not sure how that will go over in Nebraska. Tom Osbourne(especially with Steroids) and Bobby Bowden were accused of this as well and got little damage to their reputation.

2.He is a very average at best X/O's coach

3.He is a decent, but not overly good recruiter(though compared to the rest of the BIG.....). Maybe at Nebraska that doesn't mean as much. OSU, we find the limitations in the 2006-08 bowl seasons.

On the plus side, he is highly competitive, loves to win and likes "street fight football". Something Nebraska badly lacked under Pelini(and the Big Ten in general) and why Wisconsin had a tendency to give Tressel tough fights despite the talent gap. To me, Nebraska should weigh the pros/cons of Tressel's age and desire. If they feel he doesn't have the same fire anymore, they should pass. If they feel still has the "tickle", go full steam ahead. I don't see Tressel having the "off field" pull in Nebraska he did in Ohio so the program can stay clean. He may be a solid 9-3 coach with a year or two of something more before he calls it quits.

This whole Tressel to Nebraska thing feels very similar to another coaching situation thing...

...mmmhmmm... yes...

...go on...

Alright, I'll make you a deal. I will give you every ounce of good vibes I have to get Tressel & Frost to you guys, then ya'll gotta help us out with this San Francisco situation. Can you imagine the upgrade the B1G would make even in its first year with these coaches? God I hope this stuff happens. Even if it most likely won't. I hope it does.

I'd ask the big man upstairs, but he never answers me.

But seriously, you're right. It's better for everyone if we both land big name coaches. Good luck!

He is a dirty cheat. That would be Nebraska selling out all values and morals, "the Nebraska way". You wanna win at all costs?

"In the morning he would read the Bible with another coach. Then, in the afternoon, he would go out and cheat kids who had probably saved up money from mowing lawns to buy those raffle tickets. That's Jim Tressel."

I guess Tommy Armstrong could drive around in a new Jaguar though :)

So everyone is ok with a coach that has been in trouble at every place he has been? Remember the good old days when husker fans wanted to do things the tight way.

Osborne is just as guilty as Tressel at covering up for his guys and we're gonna built ducking statues of him soon. Nebraska will always preach a clean program, but they will overlook this and preach Tressels great leadership of young men. He will be knocked for a bit if eichorst can't renegotiate the show cause penalty, but I think Eichorst is making this deal because he already has a great strategy to take the NCAA. He will preach an impeccable compliance department that will be transparent and thorough after hiring Tressel.

Really? Got specifics you can back up or are you just into slandering people using the anonymity of the interwebs?

Do some digging there is plenty

Yep, I wanna win but not by selling my soul to the devil. What good does it do if you win a championship and have to vacate the wins? We are one of the few school that haven't had any major rules violations in out history and I'd like it to stay that way. Once you open that door what becomes ok next?

Has everyone gotten their hopes up with the idea of Tressel coming to Nebraska, to the point where you guys are going to be disappointed with any other coach named? Do we even know if Tressel has been interviewed by SE? Are the rumors all due to the Where's Waldo type sightings of Tressel in Lincoln?

yes

I'm not sure that any of these rumors of Tressel being in the running are more than just rumors. Sure, Tressel could work out. But so could a half dozen other guys. I just hope Eichorst doesn't let this thing drag on long enough to damage our program and flush another recruiting class down the toilet.

So that makes it ok? SEC here we come!

No it's never ok, but some people think Osborne led a squeaky clean program and walked on water. Listen I will always be a HUGE fan of TO but like every coach, he has done some things that he hasn't been proud of.

True, there are things TO himself wishes he'd done differently. Back in the mid-90's we became thugskers for a reason. Bo has certainly run a cleaner program than TO but he had temper issues and mouthed-off a ton. Devaney wasn't perfect either, dude was a total lush. Solich is generally known as a good guy but have a DUI in Ohio. Yes Tressel does have some baggage and no I don't buy the altruistic spin on what happened at OSU but overall he's a good guy like the other three are and Devaney was.
