zoogs
Now that we have a dedicated special teams coach in Bruce Read, do we start seeing even more scholarships devoted to specialists? The previous staff didn't seem shy about offering kickers, but (IIRC) that was it. And these spots usually seem to be claimed by walk-ons. However, we had long snapper Grant Glulaich here this weekend: Here's what this site has to say about him: Gluhaich was, easily, one of the most impressive overall Long Snappers at the Rubio Long Snapping Spring Event in Las Vegas. To see he rips the ball back to the punter with power would be the understatement of the decade. He almost crushes the punter's hands. Kid can snap and snap it FAST! You need to see it to even believe it. His form is excellent and he shows good accuracy/consistency. He is growing quickly and will be an absolute steal for a college right now! Incredible attitude. OFFER HIM NOW!!! Does he come here without a scholarship offer? Quote Link to comment
strigori
Pelini had scholarships out for long snappers before. Though ideally you only carry one on the roster at a time. Quote Link to comment
Mavric
Gabe Miller was a scholarship LS out of HS. Played one year, hurt last year, now on medical hardship. We got Miami's old LS last year (scholarship) but I don't think he played much. Quote Link to comment
zoogs
Oh, good points. I forgot about those guys. I remember being pretty thin in the end due to injury on LS. Was Miami's LS a senior or is he still on the roster? Quote Link to comment

I don't mind having a scholarship LS but Fulkenberry seemed to do a great job this year so I'm not sure if it's necessary as he'll be here for a couple years yet. Quote Link to comment
The Dude
Kind of a waste of a scholarship. You ought to be able to find someone (or 30 someones) who can do that job on a 105-man roster. On the other hand, we couldn't even find someone to do reglular snapping well last year lulz. Quote Link to comment

The long snappers are involved in enough plays and it is a skill (have you tried long snapping?) that they truly are specialists on par with kickers and punters. Quote Link to comment

It's really, incredibly, laughably easy. Not remotely on par with punting or place kicking as far as skill required. Quote Link to comment

Anyone can longsnap, very very few can do it at an elite level however Quote Link to comment

I long snapped throughout highschool and used to coach it. The basics have to come naturally. Coaching is really just refining the skill. Quote Link to comment

You either got it or you don't. Quote Link to comment
Mavric
Sounds like Read was back in contact with Chris Rubio, same "long snap guru" where we got Gluhaich's name from and is looking at a couple more guys. Sounds like we're still after one for this class. Quote Link to comment

Dagerow
I don't have a problem with a long snapper getting an offer. What I do question is why we offer a guy who hadn't received any other offers less then one week before the signing deadline. Scholorerships are valuable/limited, and it would have been nice if they convinced a pretty good long snapper (who has a skill set similar to the guy they just offered) to walk on, even if they told him he could earns the scholorership with his play on the field. whateveritis1224
Did not see any problem with Faulkenberry last year, if you're looking for a scholarship long snapper give it to him. Mangieri was a long snapper on scholarship from his freshman year. Only problem in his four years of work was in the Monsoon game at Missouri where he botched a couple of punt snaps. I have no problem with offering a scholarship at an important position, but I do not see the need this year when there is a reduced amount of scholarships available. Quote Link to comment
