Camping Out: Offensive Line

Recommended Posts

First team Oline:

Lewis

Utter

Reeves

Kondolo

Sterup

Based upon ? Is this just a prediction?

Really surprised by Sterup maintaining the RT spot. If he's the best we got though, credit to him. He must've worked on his hips and his footwork over the offseason because the dude was a statue out ther last year. Good for him if he keeps it.

Should have clarified...that is who Severe said was the 1st team oline was.

If Sterup was as banged up as it sounds like he was last year I am willing to give him a fresh chance this year.

Alex Lewis has secured the left tackle spot, but he didn't have a strong practice Sunday night, struggling at times with Jack Gangwish. At left guard, Dylan Utter has worked mostly with the 1s, but Jerald Foster, playing with the 2s, has been dominant at times. He's stronger and quicker than the guys he's facing on the No. 2 defense, and it'd be interesting to see him square off more often with Kevin Williams and/or Vincent Valentine when he returns. Foster appears, at least to me, to be Nebraska's most athletic guard.
At center, Ryne Reeves and Paul Thurston are rotating. Reeves may have a slight advantage, but that's presuming full health through camp, which is uncertain with Reeves. Both are better snappers than their predecessor at center, Mark Pelini, who played mostly for his smarts in line calls.
Right guard belongs to Chongo Kondolo. He needs to work on his false starts. Kondolo is strong and may surprise some defensive linemen this year with his punch. Like Thurston and Reeves, it's surprising Kondolo didn't play more last year. His backup is Givens Price, who slid inside from tackle. Corey Whitaker, Tanner Farmer and Zach Hannon are behind the quartet at guard, with Hannon needing to improve in a hurry.
At right tackle, Nick Gates may be a little short, but he's a good run blocker and remember: Right tackle is where he played at Las Vegas Bishop Gorman High School. Gates is aggressive and he can move pretty well. Gates filled in for Zach Sterup Sunday once Sterup got dinged up. That position for grabs. Matt Finnin and David Knevel are in the mix, as well.

Sounds like left tackle (Lewis) and right guard (Kondolo) might be the only positions where we have a solid #1. We'll probly see Sterup at right tackle, Utter at left guard and Reeves at center. But really it sounds like these last spots are up for grabs.

Really sounds like Chongo has stepped up.

Or he's trying to get the bad taste of the practice out of his mouth. I applaud guys putting in extra work, but it may be due to him struggling in practice, which is a concern.

Chongo is probly getting as much of a workout as anyone in camp. Maliek Collins will be one of the best guys he faces this year. Maybe *the* best.
