***Southern Miss Game Discussion***

Can't say I'm shocked by some of these negative comments, but it's getting a little ridiculous. We're up 22-0 at halftime people cheer up! This isn't a video game you can't score every possession, or average 20 yards a play. Personally, I'm happy with what I'm seeing on the field so far

Generally agree. Lots to like here. But I think the grumbling is because we know that it's not going to be as easy to move the ball in conference play. If we're struggling to punch it in against S. Miss, there is fear we'll be shutout against some of the stouter D's in the BIG.

I understand where you're coming from, but let's not forget that Ohio State struggled to move the ball against Northern Illinois last week. Just because you play one poorly one week doesn't mean that's how you'll look the rest of the season. In the words of Aaron Rodgers...Relax 5e9e2774-5437-4cc2-b9a3-94a0417172b3.jpg

Good point. Personally, I'm chill. I still believe we're going to go 9-3.

FIRST HALF OBSERVATIONS:

  • Was that the longest Fullback run for Nebraska in the last 10 years?!? Even if it wasn't I love the creative plays & formations that Riley & Langsdorf are using to get Janovich involved in the offense.
  • Tommy's overall quarterback mechanics are absolutely stellar compared to last season. He's only going to keep getting better...which is scary for opposing defenses.
  • Offensively we do need to do a much better job running the ball in the Red Zone. 22-0 at halftime is nice, but this game should be over by now.
  • Our cause of giving up big pass plays defensively isn't Banker's scheme folks. Those players are in the right position. It mostly falls on the secondary group that is still struggling with basic fundamentals for their position, which goes back to coaching. Time for Coach Stewart to step it up with that group.

Things to look for in the 2nd half:

  1. Look for more misdirection plays (counters, play-action bootlegs, roll-out screens, reverses, etc.) Southern Miss is biting hard when Nebraska motions or makes it look like we're going to send the play to the boundary.
  2. If we go up 29-0, look for Banker to start dialing up more of our complex blitzes.

The only negative I can really complain about is settling for all these field goals. If we would have converted a few of them into TDs, we would have really blown the door open.

Third and short has been killing us all year. We need a solution soon.

No matter how bad the opposition is, when you hold them to negative rushing yards you will win, and it is a beautiful thing to watch.
