That's actually way less than I imagined.

For comparison, that's almost fifty times more than the cost of our latest/greatest nuclear aircraft carrier.

It's based on current technology. The author recognizes the heat from the nuclear reactors would literally melt it. If we wanted to KEEP it, I would imagine a few more 0's are needed...

It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. But then winter came and the grasshopper died. And the octopus ate all his acorns. Also he got a race car. Is any of this getting through to you?

I have this. It cost $300 about ten years ago but it was worth it.  Utterly gorgeous. Not sure they even sell this set anymore.

Yeah, not paying the people he hires sure helps with cost containment.

Back to this light-hearted discussion though: I think people are either forgetting or under-estimating two, I think, very crucial elements here: slavery and theft.

The Galactic Empire basically operates day to on slavery, ok "conscripts."

Plus, it is clear through canon that the Empire really doesn't pay for anything.  They simply invade a world, kill the indigenous populations, and steal all natural resources.

So, if we're going to build a Star Destroyer, and we don't have to pay for labor or materials, that would bring the overall price down substantially.
