Like him or not, i don't think we can realistically get a better coach.

hi all:

i know in the wake of nebraska's big loss, alot of people on this board have been calling for changes in the coaching staff (e.g. callahan and cosgrove). there was even a posting where the question was asked for people to select from a list of coaches currently at other schools, which one would they like to have coach the huskers. however, when i was thinking about this question and considered the realtive difficulty nebraska had in actually hiring a big time coach after solich was let go, it dawned on me that from a known entity standpoint, callahan is probably the best nebraska is going to do for awhile. some may argue that with all of our tradition and success in the past then we shold have no problem in attracting a top flight coach, but if you honestly consider the payscale (middle of the pack), recruiting base (1.7 million people in nebraska), culture and location of the university (hey i love lincoln and the university, received my PhD there, but it is a bit dull and straight-laced) is it really that attractive of job? in addition, the two coaches that put nebraska back into the limelight after a 20 year lull, both came from relative obscurity. devaney had been an assistant at michigan state and head man at wyoming, while osborne was a local boy and assistant under devaney. my final point is that i don't think we will be able to hire away a proven division 1 college coach from any other school and will eventually be forced to hire some up and coming assistant or division 1-AA or DII coach that is hungry to prove himself at the next level. i also believe nebraska's current AD thought along similar lines and as a consequence has tried to lock-up callahan for several years. even though i don't particularly like the current AD he is quite shrewd and politically savvy considering the timing of the contract extension. he made the announcement after a blowout win against nevada and before they played USC. can you imagine the public outcry if he had made the announcement this week? anyway, i would love to hear other peoples thoughts on this topic.

Awesome post, I agree, finally someone looks at the current situation from a different POV

You make great points. Although who would want to come here anyway with the totally unrealistic expectations the fans put on the program? My guess...no one. NC every year, never lose a game, ever. Tradition and history are great, as ours is, however, nothing lasts forever and we as fans need to understand that. We need to be patient. We should have been changing and evolving long before we did. Everyone, (the powers if you will), did. We didn't until it was too late.

Patience, Patience, Patience. You know the old saying: "Good things come to those that wait."

I believe that applies to us, HUSKER NATION!

as far as the contract thingy, I believe the LJS ran a story that stated the contract was agreeded upon or worked out weeks before, just waiting on the sigs. Once again Husker Nation assumes the worst. Sometimes I think ol' SP does things just to piss certain people off.

At any rate, GO BIG RED!!! And I'm N.

Do you honestly believe this? I suppose Notre Dame and Miami fired coaches because they don't expect much? OU was a coaching carrosell after Barry put them on probation because their school, their fans, their alum, etc. all expected to win NC's. It's absurd and quite honestly a bit conceited to think the fans from NU are the ONLY fans of any college football team that expect to play for and win NC's every year. Carr is on the hotseat up there in Michigan because their fans don't really care about winning NC's every year? Please. Look at Alabama. They're so desperate to get back into the limelight that they go out and pay Saban what 4 million a year? We're hardly unique in any way in terms of our expectations. This notion is totally absurd.

I have an old saying as well, "Nice guys finish last". Unfortunately, we're in no position to make any kind of coaching change anytime soon. I guess we like being the nice guys. If we come up with the bling, we'll have no trouble hiring a quality coach.

Yes I do HONESTLY believe this.

Nebraska fans have forgotten how to be a fan. They think they are entitled to NC. Doesn't work that way. Like I said, we should have been evolving with the game a lot sooner that we did. Now we pay the price.

Just because we want it doesn't make it so.

i like your point about the "bling" and think you are right, but i am not sure the administration at UNL will ever fork over the required money. it would probably take warren buffet or peter kiewit to pony up the cash as some sort of donation. although, i would be surprised if buffet would do this considering his stance on the solich firing.

Bingo, we have a winner. No, we're not going to pony up the money. Yeah, there's still a lot of Nebraskans pissed off about the Solich firing. Pud completely divided the state or divided the fans anyway. He sh#t in his own bed, and now we all have to sleep in it. I've said all along that BC is just a pawn in Pud's freak show. I never did see him on TV while watching the game. I wonder if he looked as uncomfortable last Saturday as he did a few years ago while our team was getting torched by KANSAS? Pud should run for President. He can sell a used car like no one else, and he can spin things faster than anyone else. "We will not surrender the Big 12 to Oklahoma and Texas". I wonder what kind of timeline he has for all of this? Apparently, it's until 2011.

Bob Stoops knew what was expected at OU, and he delivered. Urban Meyers knew what was expected at Florida, and he delivered. Bob Davies knew what was expected at Notre Dame, and he didn't deliver and was terminated. Coaches know what's expected when they're hired. If they're paid the kind of money some programs are paying, they don't run from the challenge. IMO, we got exactly what we paid for!

Don't blame the fans for this the expectation were changed when a AD came and fired a coach 9-3 and would have been 10-3. I doubt even the Solich haters were happy for firing a coach after 10-3 season.

I was far from being a solich fan but, when a college fires a coach for doing his job the college coaching fraternity is not going to beat down your door to work there.

The only way there is a head coaching change in the next 3 years is if Callahan leaves on his own.

As far as hiring new coaches, I have always been a proponent of finding an up and coming assistant from a BCS program for new coaches. I am not a fan of trying to steal away others coaches for a couple reasons.

1- they tend to be job hoppers after the next big thing. I want someone who will stay.

2 - most mid-major Boss men who over up to BCS fail, or never get past average. The only one that springs to mind is Urban Meyer who has had a lot of success. For every Meyer, you get several Pinkels.

Money isnt that big a factor, If we had a coach who deserved that kind of money, he would get it. As it stands Callahan is only under Brown, Stoops and Fran(who is way the hell over paid, and is looking at getting fired). Not exactly 'middle of the pack' but as he hasnt won a NC yet that Brown and Stoops have, he hasnt earned that 3mill paycheck yet. If we win a NC in the next couple years, you would see a new contract with $2.5 million plus salary.

I was very happy he got canned. Never should have had the job to begin with.

Coach Callahan is our coach, now lets see where this road leads. I prefer to be positive. It's easier on my nerves.

thank you and goodnight.

Wait, solich was "our" coach, too. I just don't understand your criteria.
