Biggest decision in program's history.....

This is not a discussion on whether or not a change needs to be made......that's a done deal, and even if it's not, I'm getting tired of same ol' topic...

Instead.....Does anyone agree that the next 2-3 weeks, TO is going to make a decision that will ultimately be the most important one in the progarams history and future....

I have a real "uneasiness" about this whole situation... I just feel that our biggest fear 4 years ago is ultimately coming true...... "revolving door"....." Alabama".....

TO needs to make sure that this next coach, or same coach is someone who is going to not only turn this program around, understand the fan-base, but feels as if this coach will stick around..... Of course, I am not trying to tell TO his job, so for some of you guys looking for a reason to "attack" or "argue"....please don't waste yours or my time...

My question I guess would be.... is anyone else very uneasy about the entire situation? TO retires, we all freak out....Frank takes the job (does fine....ok....), fired, Husker Nation a little divided on this..... BC comes in and Husker Nation still divided a bit..... 4 years later..... Most escorting BC to the door......

Now, if we don't get lucky like OU with Stoops (turns around program and stays)..... I am afraid that in 4-5 years, this may happen again....which is why I am uneasy , but realize the "enormity" of the decision about to be made...

I trust TO, just uneasy feeling about what's happening...... (not firing BC, just teh progression the programs taken)

Good post. That has been my concern all along, and I have (in the past) advocated retaining Callahan and hoping that he would learn over time. That is simply impossible now, though . . . too much animosity has developed with NU fans, too many are eager for his demise. It shows on him, too . . . his press conferences lately are borderline bizarre, and he has clearly been mentally affected by the negativism that has become associated with his name.

Callahan is gone . . . I am convinced of that, due to Osborne's lack of support for this coaching staff.

This next few years will be a real roll of the dice. Modern coaches are all about the money; those that are loyal to the program they are coaching will not be lured here; the ones that are enticed by the money might well be lured elsewhere by more money. Continuity is the key, and that will be the toughest part.

Gill might be a good fit, but I don't know that he can be a HC at this level. This will be interesting at the very least, but you can bet that I will support the coaching staff next year, whomever it may be.

Something that mosts haven't considered, but what if Osborne ditches Callahan and does even worse? Things could conceivably get worse(believe it or not). I don't think this will happen, but food for thought. Regardless, TO is faced with a huge decision and should probably rely on the force.

I totally understand people are concerned about hiring choices, etc. Keep in mind. Lots of people constantly reference Osborne on here. And why can't we run the ball like we did in the 90's and why the mood is different and what Osborne did....on and on and on. Osbourne coached here for 20 some years? There were some shady times in the beginning. Read earlier topics and his book and statements that he had people at his throat many years and many times ready for his firing and resignation. We too soon forget he coached here a long long time. I took all 20 whatever years to develop consistency and to get them where they were in the 90's. That is not a statement to keep any of the coaching staff or whatever. Just saying that sometimes there can be quick turnarounds, but that is usually not the norm.

I'm not sure Osborne is looking inside the family at all. In fact, given that the staff all went out to Nebraska high schools touting the walk on program this week I'm not 100% certain that Callahan is on his way out.

But if a new coach is hired, I have a feeling it's already a done deal. And his name is Monte Kiffin.

Tom Osborne does not make big decision based on emotional reactions. That's why I doubt Pelini or Gill is his choice. He'll be looking for a quality man, with good judgement. TO would look at a guy like Kiffin. A TO kind of man.

My hunch is that Kiffin is the guy. He'll bring Lane to run the offense and Lane takes over when Monte Retires. IMO, Somehow that plan just has the ring of truth to it.

Hard to say who he is going to pick, but it needs to be the right pick. While this isnt to what happened at Alabama, and I dont think it will ever get to that point, but we dont need another 4 and out. OU's timeline ran almost the exact same number of years ours did, 1 more coach, but Shnellenberger(i know i misspelled that) was only there for 1 year. We really need this to be our Bob Stoops.

Saying anyone is going to use it as a stepping stone to the NFL is a totally unknowable event. When Stoops was hired at OU, not many thought he would be there past 5 years, for that very reason. But when you look at things and how they stand between the NFL and College, NFL teams are getting more and more hesitant to hire college guys, as almost all who have made the jump failed. The NFL to college move hasnt done much better. And the money really isnt that different anymore either.

That is one of the most intelligent comments so far regarding the decision T.O. has to make. :hellloooo

I would love to see the Kiffin's roaming the sideline at NU, but do you really think Lane would leave the head coaching position at Oakland to come be our OC?

Think about this though,

they were talking about this on unsportsman like conduct, Monte Kiffin has said that he would have taken the head coaching job at NU if he was offered back in 2004. If Steve Pederson wasnt such an idiot and given Kiffin a chance at the job instead of going after all these coaches who failed in the NFL, just think if Monte Kiffin got the job. Monte would have brought in his son as the OC(was at USC at the time), and he is good friends with Pelini and would have gotten him to stay on as our DC.

So our staff would look like this..... Monte Kiffin-HC, Lane Kiffin-OC, Bo Pelini-DC, and i am sure the Kiffin's have plenty of connections to bring in a bunch of great assistants. Talk about a Huskers Dream Team

If only Steve Pederson was such a Jack Ace. :madash

The thing we all need to remember is to be patient for once. This next coach has to be the right one because I definately don't want to go through this crap every 4 years! I agree that this is a very very important decision, but I don't think it's the biggest ever.

Keyword PATIENCE. Don't think that word is in the vocabulary of the Husker fans from the years 2004-2007. Feel sorry for the next guy and the next guy because Huskers fans have very little patience when it counts the most. Most demand perfection from the onset. Good luck with that.

I as a fan am willing to wait, watch and enjoy. Whatever happens.

I wondered about that also. Monte is getting to the end of his coaching days. He might just want to take the the job he wanted back in the 70's. I don't know if his son would want to give up his gig. Your supposed to be at the top of your profession when you reach the NFL, aren't you? It sounds good if it went down that way. Bo may be the real deal, but he only stays 3 or 4 years. Gill would stay till he retires. It's hard to understand the Husker tradition unless you have lived it or played it. I wish TO the best of luck on a tough decision.

GBR!!!

I dono,

I think most of it hast to do with husker nation. Obviously there are coaching issues, but I think they are smaller than callahan. I think the real issue is cosgrove. If we had a good D callahan might actually be able to do ok but he doesn't have the balls to fire cos. Thats his real fault. Not that I think he is a great coach. But at some point its up to husker nation to stand behind whoever the coach is, for an extended period of time. I think given a few more years and a new DC even callahan could turn this thing around.

I would tend to agree....but the Husker Nation would never stand for it.
