Hunter94
RB Marlon Lucky—Had only 25 yards and seven carries. Lucky can look as though he’s trying to avoid contact and might be too focused on being an elusive runner. above quote from rivals.com Quote Link to comment
Cy the Cyclone
Mellow out people....at this point, the running game is so transparent it's pretty easy for defenses to stack the box against it. If Lucky get's the ball, it's going outside the tackles...everything else is going inside the tackles. Everybody is going to be keying on Lucky until someone else can step up and prove they are a big time back and so far nobody has done it. Until that happens, or the passing game can prove to be a consistent weapon to loosen up the linebackers and DB's, (something which has not materialized yet in my opinion) Lucky is going to continue to be pounded into the turf by a ball-hawking defensive gang tacklers every time he touches the ball. Once somebody steps up as a reliable offensive threat to take the pressure off of him, things should loosen up for Lucky and he'll have more room to operate. Quote Link to comment
trouble
Lucky is a scat back, He is an elusive runner and avoids contact whenever possible. He is also one helluva receiver out of the backfield. A back like that needs good blocking, which we don't seem to have this year. I still have faith in him. Helu will be damn good though. junior4949
I didn't get to see the first quarter, only listen to it on the radio. From what I gathered, there were gaping holes for the D to run through. We weren't blocking anyone, and that was on pass plays. Our OL is not the strength of this team as I was led to believe. I guess it now makes sense why our DL was able to push them around in preseason practices. Very few RB's can run behind a subpar OL. Walter Payton did it for several years as did Barry Sanders, but beyond that most RB's need a decent OL to run behind. I'm still pissed about Castille totally dropping the ball on the option. He was good for at least 5 if not 10 yards if he just grabs the friggin ball. Quote Link to comment
Apathy
I'm actually glad that I was in a wedding instead of at home because I'm sure I would've bit a couple of my fingers off while watching that game. As myself and the other groomsmen were changing and eating we were getting pretty sick to our stomach on how poor our Offense was playing. Everybody knew that starting off this season that our main concern was our defense until this past Saturday. Our Offensive Line needs help big time on the running attack and to protect our QB. We had 3 penalties in a row and we allow two sacks in our first position. Bo needs to chew him gum harder and to whoop some a$$ the rest of this week and get our boys in line for this weeks game for I will be attending my first night game. Barney needs to light a match underneath our lineman and get on their a$$es for allowing such a piss poor performance over a mediocre team. There was no reason for our players to play in such a manner and whatever happen to our Linemans contest on Pancake blocks, I've yet to see one of our lineman just blow up a defensive player and plant his tush on the turf. Boy when I come to Lincoln this Saturday I better see a Nebraska team just out blow our opponent and actually allow one of our RB's to break over a 100yds. Quote Link to comment
TheKiD
it's the O line, but Lucky can't find a seam or break a tackle. 1) Lucky had a very nice TD run against Western Michigan. The one where he waited for the seam to open up and then hit it for about a 15 yard TD. 2) Helu looks great right now to be sure. However I don't think Helu gives us the consistency that Lucky does. He only looks better because he can make plays when the blocks are not there. Don't get me wrong it's great to have a back like that.. but it does mean he is a better back than Lucky.. only different, and will probably be more effective than lucky until the line starts blocking the run better. 3) We started to get the run going several times against SJSU and WMU but too many mistakes killed any momentum we got going. This team, on both sides of the ball, have a long way to go. If we can get the mistakes corrected I don't have much concern about our running game. Though the line DOES have to get more physical.. but I'm loving the blocking done by our WR's.. Peterson and Swift both had great blocks against SJSU. And I love the play we ran back to back where we had Peterson out in front blocking for Swift or Holt or whoever it was.. that'll be a good play for us to rely on. Quote Link to comment
Cy the Cyclone
Just wait till we play ISU and Lucky will have a 200yd game and 3 TD's on that poor ISU defense..........Sorry Cy I couldn't resist Actually, I kind of agree with you. Our defense against the rush isn't exactly lighting em up...guys are young and over-pursuing all over the field, letting guys like Jarvis at Kent State cut back and rip off some pretty good runs (not taking anything away from Jarvis though...that guy is legitimate NFL material). Our rushing game isn't exactly lighting em up either though...four good backs but no real great back yet. Our #1 guy got hurt (surprise, surprise) and didn't play last weekend (should be back in some form or other against Iowa next week). Our #2 guy just getting back on the team before SDSU game after a suspension and still working back into shape. Regardless, having Bates in there always gives us a legitimate running threat. I'm going to be interested in watching how both teams progress this year. I really like the enthusiasm I'm seeing right now. As long as they can keep that up, it'll be a good year for both schools. clone
At the start of the year, we were all talking about our 'strong' offensive line and how we were going to run the ball more. Now that the season has started, we have not managed to get any decent yardage running the football. We play 2 mid major conference team and our O-Line cannot even block! Now just imagine when we start playing real teams like Va Tech and KU. #44 NU vs: wmu ranked about #85 when played "10 man wall" held nu to 130 yards sjs ranked at #93 when played another 10 man wall??? 99 yards nms ranked #109 or so. who knows?? Should be able to pound right through teams at this level. Thank GOD for the ganzinator!! http://www.mratings.com/cf/compare.htm should be updated. GO BO!! Quote Link to comment
DJR313
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=175283 the last 2 years he has averaged around 5 yards a carry. he had over 1000 yards rushing last year, and would have had that 2 years ago as well(as a sophmore) if not behind an NFL caliber RB. now you can make all kinds of irrational excuses for this, but the facts dont back it up Last year, if you take out the Nevada game, he gained 786 yards on 176 carries, which is 4.4 yards per carry. . If you take away all applicable stats and slant the argument the way I want it, I can make my point!!!111 Super, pitch that idea to the Bobs. Quote Link to comment

In his 100+ yard games, except for Nevada, he had totals of 102 yds, 107 yds, 111 yds, and 103 yds. Against a top caliber USC defense he had 17 carries for 33 yards, 1.9 yards per attempt. Against KU, he had 8 carries for 15 yards. He has shown he can't perform with the best defenses on the field. This year he only has 19 carries for 66 yards, approximately 3.5 yards per attempt. This is with the weak defenses, of W. Michigan and San Jose State. Once we get into our conference schedule I think it will be obvious that Helu should start at RB. I think Lucky is a good pass catching RB but as a runner he cannot make it through holes or fight for extra yardage. Maybe if the O Line would pick it up a little bit he'd do a little better, but nonetheless Helu is the guy for this year. We just have to be honest with ourselves and realize Lucky isn't as good as we once thought. we also played from behind the ENTIRE game vs ku and we were forced to throw the ball... the KU game doesn't carry any validity with it w/ the running game either.... I could do that with nearly every good RB. hell I could just take the 4th quarter of the TU game for Jamaal charles Quote Link to comment

That's NOT good. except for nms this week, these are the WEAKEST opponents of the entire season. context is everything. the creampuffs are nearly gone. Starting with VaTech-- it gets a bit harder. It gets downright difficult when Mizzou comes to town. GO BO!! BEAT NMS!! Quote Link to comment
