WHAT THE HELL UNL?

Recommended Posts

Freedom of Speech. The fact that Ayers may not have had popular views against his nation and that he can STILL go out and talk is what this nation is all about. He's talking about his academic life and not his past life with the Weather Underground anyway. The SNL skits about the presidential candidates and President Bush, Letterman, Leno any comedian that makes fun of politics is exactly why this is the GREATEST nation on earth. The U.S. allows it and encourages it. You would never see this stuff in China, Iran, etc. It was said earlier, you do not have to agree with the views of the individual but you do have to allow them the right to express them, just as you have your right to express your views. Bring Ayers in, let him talk about his work, and let the protesters who will inevitably protest the event do so. It's the American way!

What's funnier is if it wasn't for this election, no one mainstream would really know who Bill Ayers is, nor would they care if he came to UNL.

Actually, that may not be true. Here's my main concern. Whether it's the election or not, once Bill O'Reilly gets hold of this, he will likely talk about this on his radio and television shows -- the highest rated news television program during the 7 p.m. CDT hour. The highest rated television news show period! O'Reilly, whether you like him or not, has a huge audience. It can't be good publicity for UNL. There's a lot of people out there, unfortunatley, who may compare this to the Iranian leader who spoke at a university a year or so ago.

So what is your point? The point of an institution of higher learning is to challenge your way of thinking and allow you to see all sides of life/issues. They say that history is written by those who won or are in charge. The universities prevent that from being overly oppressive in the development of the young mind. If you don't get all sides of an issue you can't make a rational decision. At it's core, this is a large part of what free speach is all about. Being able to express an opinion without oppression. I for one applaud UNL for doing this, it represents what America is all about.

I grew up in South Central Nebraska and that part is about as republican as it comes. I'm sure most of the rural part of this state watches O'Reilly. This rural part of the state is also a major part of the UNL fanbase. Do you really think they will push UNL aside because of something O'Reily or Rush Limbaugh might say? I doubt it. They will be mad, and they can be mad, but it won't change anything. This is just something for these blowhards to gripe about and when this election is over Ayers will not be heard about again. It's an attempt by the republican media to draw the attention away from anything that has to do with governing this country and trying to make a huge ordeal out of an acquaintance that has not bearing on the issues this country faces today.

Rush just said that UNL is inviting Terrorist, Socialist, and anti-American Bill Ayers to the school. If this crap happens I will forever cease to be a Husker Fan. I will turn in my birth certificate and denounce my Nebraska Cornhusker Native citizenship! What happened to the Nebraska I grew up in. Did a bunch of transplants come in and take over the whole state? To try to be like "KC" and other big cities. I can handle Bill Nelson being an idiot but you might as well invite those crazy anti Nebraska protesters to come and talk. Fire Pearlman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!This Should have been done along time ago he is the one who signed off on Ped's and Cally's Contract to put us in the hole on on the buyout!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, a professor of education. Gosh. Gee.
