NUance
"BLOOD SPORT: The President and His Adversaries" by James B. Stewart. Just now finishing this. It was okay. Not Stewart's best work, but okay. Anyway, I learned something interesting in the course of reading this book. It told the backstory of the Clinton travelgate scandal. Clinton Travelgate Scandal: (My paraphrasing of the situation) Bill Clinton's staff sought to fire the White House travel office workers and install their own people. Ostensibly this should have been acceptable. White House travel office staff serve at the pleasure of the president. But it turned into a huge scandal when it surfaced that Bill Clinton's third cousin was the candidate to replace the head of the White House Travel Office. This much is true. Catherine Cornelius was slated to take over the White House Travel Office. She is Bill's third cousin. But that's not the *real* reason this turned into a huge scandal. The story behind the story is that the staffers of the White House Travel Office who Clinton sought to fire had been paying out inflated amounts for travel expenditures to press corps members, who in turn had been pocketing the difference between their actual expenses. In other words, the White House Travel Office staffers had a cozy relationship with the Press Corps by virtue of the fact that they had been helping the reporters bilk their employers out of inflated travel expenses. When the White House Travel staffer's were slated to get fired--ending the gravy train of graft--the Press Corps went crazy, taking dead aim at Bill Clinton. So really, as far as this scandal is concerned, the reporters were the crooks and Bill Clinton was in the right. Intradasting... Quote Link to comment
