NU ranked #1 in Rogers Preseason Poll

Recommended Posts

ND is #59. :laughpound :laughpound :laughpound :laughpound

How do calculate the Rogers Poll??? I didnt see an explanation on their website.

The Rogers Poll is an unbiased system that can be employed to provide a comprehensive ranking of any sport. The algorithm that computes each team's poll score measures a team strictly by what they have proven with their performance throughout the season. It does not punish or reward based on tradition, name, or conference affiliation.

The goal of the Rogers Poll rankings is to effectively process the complex mosaic of each season, taking into account the entire body of work for each team. The rankings do not account for "talented" a team is perceived to be. Furthermore, the rankings are not intended to represent a hierarchical account of who could beat who. In fact, game score predictions using the poll data as a foundation are not designed to necessarily align with rankings.

The Rogers Poll has been recognized as an advanced system by the rating and ranking community and is: (1) included in the Kenneth Massey comparisons of all major systems for college basketball, baseball, and football (beginning 2010); (2) listed as a national championship selector for college football by the College Football Data Warehouse; and (3) listed among major publications for college football preseason projections by Chris Stassen.

The Rogers Poll has been statistically demonstrated by Kenneth Massey as publishing the most accurate Top 25 in college basketball.

For specific inquiries regarding the Rogers Poll, feel free to contact me by e-mail, on Twitter, or on Facebook.

There is no justification for this with the kind of offense we displayed last year. Combine that with the guys we lost on defense, and there is no way we belong at #1.

I'm fully willing to believe that this team could earn their way to #1, but preseason? Nope. There are far more deserving teams out there.

With a nod to Tropic Thunder -- I'm gonna go "full homer".

Nebraska is at least as deserving as any other team.

Offense

10 returning starters. 4 on the O-line.

Lee will be healthy

-- Except for extra picks Lee's numbers compare favorably to McElroy:

RK PLAYER TEAM ATT COMP PCT YDS YDS/A LONG TD INT SACK RAT

Greg McElroy......QB ALA 325 198 60.9 2508 7.7 80 17 4 18 140.5 -- 83 yards rushing

Zac Lee..............QB NEB 302 177 58.6 2143 7.1 74 14 10 18 126.9 -- 171 rushing

BTW - in the 2000 season Crouch passed for 1100 yards (rushed for 1100 as well).

Helu will be healthy. Last year he had 1147 in 10 or so good games

Rex & Taylor can step up if needed.

Defense:

-- Well, that's what I've read about Alabama. They have two returning starters and are still considered (by some) to be the #1 D.

NU has 6 returning starters.

I kinda agree with ya... I been saying under my breath the Lee is not as bad as QB as we think. All the QB has to do is manage the game. With a good running game that can be alot easier. Obviously, last year we struggled, but I think one of the reasons is that Lee was injured. They HAD to scale back the offense because Green was not ready to be the leader of this team and it sticked out like a sore thumb.

Im been hoping we would go to an Alabama type offense. Downhill running with playaction pass and a dominate defense. With that I think we could roll through teams. That type of offense chews up a ton of time on the clock. Thus making our defense fresher and ready to go out knock some teeth out.

Guys, this is just a computer algorithm with no data for the current season. The link Nexus provided says that it does not take into account tradition, name, conference affiliation, or how talented a team is projected to be - that eliminates almost every criteria that other preseason polls are using. If you remove those points from any argument, then this list looks as good as any other.

Preseason Score: Preseason scores are only introduced for the football rankings in order to provide a continuous meaningful set of rankings for their relatively short seasons. In other sports that do not make use of preseason scores, such as baseball and basketball, the initial release of the rankings for a given season is withheld until enough games have been played to generate meaningful ratings.

The same predictive algorithm is used as the basis for both the preseason Poll Scores and the preseason Q-Scores. As such, prior to any games being played in a given season, the Poll rank and the Q-Score rank will be identical for any given team.

For college football, calculation of the preseason scores utilizes a Bayesian network. The information used to generate inputs that populate the states of the various nodes includes: previous year's poll score, previous year's conference strength, previous year's win-loss record, turnover margin from previous season, record in close games in the previous season, number of starters returning, number of letter winners returning, number of letter winners lost, points scored in previous season, points allowed in previous season, previous year's strength of schedule, experience of the head coach (in years), and the number of seasons the head coach has been at the given institution.

Several other factors have been considered but dismissed as they have not graded out as significant in my studies.

Any poll that has the Huskers rated #1 based on what we know right now is a bad poll. I would say it is a far worse poll if the Jayhawks were rated #1, if that makes you feel better. Would be fun to see it end that way, but nothing right now tells me they should rate the Huskers that way. Nebraska is not as deserving as any other team. They are more deserving than most teams, but those teams just don't deserve it either...

If Nebraska starts in the top ten - I'm a happy boy. (Last time NU was in the top ten - Oct. 2003 for 1 week)

Top five and ahead of Texas. All the better.

Number 1! Pushing it?

I'll never admit it. corndancer.gif

The underlying algorithm for calculating the P-Scores is very straightforward. Half of the P-Score is the team's Pythagorean expectation. The other half is the mean Pythagorean expectation for all opponents faced to date.

With a cool sounding parameter like the Pythagorean expectation this poll must be accurate. This should be straightforward to you.
