Ndamukong Suh Establishes Himself as Candidate for Player of the Year

11/01/2010 9:29 AM ET By Michael David Smith

Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has been considered the front-runner for the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year award since the moment Roger Goodell called his name as the No. 2 pick in last April's NFL draft.

But is it possible that calling Suh a defensive rookie of the year candidate is selling him short? Peter King of "Sports Illustrated" wrote in his latest Monday Morning Quarterback column that Suh is "playing like not only the Defensive Rookie of the Year but also a Defensive Player of the Year candidate."

It's hard to disagree. Suh has 6 1/2 sacks this season, and he's probably better against the run than he is at rushing the passer. Suh was absolutely collapsing the middle of the Redskins' line on Sunday, which is a big part of the reason that Redskins starting running back Ryan Torain finished the game with just 10 yards on nine carries.

Suh put an exclamation point on his great game on Sunday by picking up a Rex Grossman fumble and rumbling into the end zone, although that particular play was more about the ball happening to bounce to him than anything else. Much more impressive was the way Suh blew through double teams, play after play after play, and made it just about impossible for the Redskins' offense to get anything going. He's an absolute force.

Lions receiver Nate Burleson is an eight-year veteran who's played for three different teams, but he sounded after the game like he hasn't seen anything like Suh before.

"Man, he's a freak," Burleson said. "He's physically something that most teams are not ready for."

Realistically, Suh isn't going to win the Defensive Player of the Year award unless the Lions significantly improve over the second half of the season. Those awards hardly ever go to players on teams with losing records, and the Lions are 2-5 this year. But there may not be a better defensive player in the NFL right now than Ndamukong Suh. This was a draft pick that the Lions got right.

Looks like McCoy is playing quite well for a rookie. His stats are impressive --- he is doubtless contributing and was a solid pick. that said... Suh is a beast and is dramatically better.... as we all knew would be the case.

For comparison's sake (not including yesterday's games):

McCoy:

Sacks: 0.0

Tackles: 13

FF: 1

INT: 0

Suh:

Sacks: 6.5

Tackles: 27

FF: 0

INT: 1

Sure, but the question back then wasn't "Would McCoy be a good rookie," it was, "Will McCoy be better than Suh?" The obvious answer was no, he wouldn't be. The stats bore that out. The combine bore that out. Their play on the field the last two years bore that out. Despite this, despite all the evidence to the contrary, McShay went on every program, article and blog he could find to say that McCoy was the better pro prospect. McShay made a case for McCoy and it could have affected Suh's draft stock and his future, and people were pissed. The fact that McShay was not just wrong but horribly wrong still rankles with plenty of people.

Thank goodness hes doing well for my lions (been a fan of the lions since 1991, we did go to the nfc championship that yea only to get throttled by the soon to be supe bowl champions, the Washington Redskins). Suh and vanden bosch have been beasts. I honestly think corey williams and suh are the best DT tandem IN THE LEAGUE. Williams is just as big of a beast as Suh! We got burleson back from injury a few games ago and the lions should end up with about 5 wins. Our lb cop is TERRIBLE and ou secondary is horrible, besides Delmas. Raiola, even though he is a fellow husker, has been horrible for us. He calls the wrong line audibles when he sees a defense blitzing. I know other lions fans are really happy with Suh, he could easily get 12 sacks this year.

Maybe they'll make a push for Amukamara.
