Scott Frost for OC!!!

Recommended Posts

Actually, i didn't. Note the part where i said that's pelini's career at the point he first became a defensive coordinator at nebraska.

Which is the point of comparing his career to frost's career now, given that we are debating whether or not frost has enough experience to be a coordinator..

Wow, I totally missed that...Carry on. :)

Did Pelini have any experience as a d-coordinator when we hired him in 2003? He came in from a job as a position coach...

Pelini's resume directly from wikipedia. Long post, so be wary...

Following his playing career, Pelini began his coaching career at the University of Iowa as a graduate assistant for the Iowa Hawkeyes under Hayden Fry in 1991. During this period, he also completed his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1992. In 1993, he served for one year as quarterbacks coach at Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown.

In 1994, Pelini got his first position in the National Football League when he was hired by San Francisco 49ers head coach George Seifert as a scouting assistant. He was quickly promoted to assistant secondary coach, and by the spring of 1994 he had been promoted again to Defensive Backs Coach. In 1995, in his new position, he coached in his first Super Bowl as the 49ers defeated the San Diego Chargers 49–26 in Super Bowl XXIX.

In 1997, Pelini was hired by New England Patriots head coach Pete Carroll, again as defensive backs coach, helping the Patriots reach the playoffs twice during his three years there.

In 2000, Pelini became the Linebackers Coach for the Green Bay Packers under head coach Mike Sherman. Green Bay posted a 33–15 record and reached the playoffs twice in Pelini's three years there as linebackers coach.

Pelini returned to the college ranks in 2003 when he was hired as Defensive Coordinator for the Nebraska Cornhuskers by Head Coach Frank Solich. In 2002, the season prior to his hiring, Nebraska's defense was ranked 55th nationally. In his first year it improved to 11th and led the country in turnover margin. At the conclusion of the regular season, despite posting a 9–3 record, Solich was fired by new Nebraska athletic director Steve Pederson. Pelini was named the interim head coach and led the Cornhuskers to a 17-3 win over the Michigan State Spartans in the 2003 Alamo Bowl.[3] Pelini interviewed for the Nebraska head coach position, but Pederson instead decided after a 41-day search to hire Bill Callahan, who had just been fired by the Oakland Raiders after a disappointing 4–12 season. The following year, Nebraska's defense fell to 56th nationally.

For 2004, Pelini joined the Oklahoma Sooners as co-defensive coordinator under head coach Bob Stoops, helping the Sooners to a 6th place national rushing defense and 11th place national scoring defense on their way towards winning the 2004 Big 12 Championship Game and a spot in the 2005 BCS National Championship Game, where they were defeated 55-19 by the University of Southern California.

In 2005, Pelini was hired by Louisiana State University Tigers Head Coach Les Miles, again as defensive coordinator. His success continued, as LSU was ranked 3rd nationally in overall defense for each of his three years with the Tigers. At the conclusion of the 2007 regular season, LSU defeated Tennessee 21-14 in the 2007 SEC Championship Game and went on to win 38-24 against Ohio State, Pelini's alma mater, in the 2008 BCS National Championship Game.

During the 2007 football season, Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman fired athletic director Steve Pederson, and appointed former Cornhuskers head coach Tom Osborne as Interim Athletic Director. One day after the Cornhuskers' final game of the season, a 65–51 loss to Colorado and finishing the season with 5 wins and 7 losses, Osborne fired Bill Callahan and announced an immediate search for a new football coach. Pelini was selected after a nine-day search as the next head coach. Two names revealed among five interviewed candidates included Buffalo head coach Turner Gill and Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe.

Scott Frost's Coaching career...

In 2007, he joined the University of Northern Iowa coaching staff as the linebackers coach, later being promoted to Co-Defensive Coordinator.

On January 26, 2009, Frost was hired as the wide receivers coach for the University of Oregon.

That's a pretty significant difference, imho. Frost has a lot to prove before becoming a coordinator.

Well the size makes it look like alot more when there's a paragraph for each of bo's positions and a sentence for each of scott's.

here is what it would really look like

Bo Pelini

1991- graduate assistant at iowa

1993- qb coach at cardinal mooney high

1994- hired by san fran 49ers as scouting assitant, promoted to assistant secondary coach. then promoted to db's coach in 1995

1997- hired by new england as a db's coach

2000- hired by green bay as a linebacker's coach

This is pelini's career before being hired by nebraska as a defensive coordinator

Now Scott frost

2002 - was a graduated assistant for nebraska

2007- hired as a graduate assistant at kansas state.

2007- Hired by the university of northern iowa as a linebacker's coach, was then promoted to co-defensive coordinator

2009- hired by the university of oregon as the wide receiver's coach

Bo was definitely more experienced when he was hired as the d-coordinator than scott is now, but the difference isn't a huge as the paragraphs would make it seem.

I personally would like to see scott come to nebraska as a wr or qb coach before getting a crack at a coordinator position here, but that's just me, and i wouldn't be opposed to him getting a look now.

edit: my bad, i forgot to put in bo's time at iowa and at cardinal mooney high..

2nd edit: scott also held graduate assistant positions

Scott also played in the NFL. I don't know if that goes to coaching experience necessarily, but it had to be filled with a sort of learning that could flavor his thoughts about coaching... for whatever that would be worth :)

Why do you suppose he is the best option among all the potential candidates in the profession? Because he was a good player here. That's it.

You are assuming my suppositions apparently, because I never said such a thing. If this was my only reasoning, why would I not add several dozen other former players to the discussion (as there have been plenty of good players here)? Clearly Frost is doing something right as the receivers that he is teaching are executing well in a very good offense. You can take away any credit from him and give it to Kelly's system, although you could do that with most position coaches if you wanted. I'm not in charge of the hire so I have the luxury of not having to compare him to every other possible candidate in the world (which I'm sure there are dozens of). I do think being from Nebraska and being passionate about Nebraska football counts for something, and Frost would probably hold the clear edge in that regard. So I think, if he's legitimately good at what he does, he has the experience at this point to be a serious candidate, and worth an interview (again, for position coach, not OC). We probably wouldn't have to worry about him taking off with 2-3 seasons of success, which is always a potential issue with other candidates.

On the other hand, if he just isn't a good coach then we can forget the idea completely. You are suggesting this, but haven't indicated your sources, which makes it hard for the rest of us to evaluate your conclusions. Other sources are in contradiction to yours, saying that he is actually a very good position coach. Which sources are right, I don't know, but all I'm really saying is that if Gilmore is fired, Frost should get another look.

I didn't know you wanted Gilmore gone as well so I take back my change allergy accusation ;)

The problem is deeper than just the OC. Watson, Cotton, and Gilmore are all up on the chopping block now, and I think most people are more upset with Cotton than wit Watson. I'd rather see a replacement at o-line, personally, than at OC.

That said, is a WR position coach from Oregon really what this team needs?

Sorry I didn't read any further down the thread than this post but what is the big problem with Cotton? I have NEVER been a Barney Cotton supporter, but this year I think he proved his worth. Our line was fine. Was it dominant in every game? No, but it was pretty consistent. They played well against Oklahoma. Any sack we had was honestly Taylor's fault for not finding the open receivers, not scrambling successfully, and not throwing the ball away. I still am keeping my eye on Cotton to see how he does next year, but there is no way he needs to be replaced more than Watson.

Here are the two major problems with our offensive line.

1) Discipline. Penalties (like false starts) have killed drives all year like they did last year.

2) Consistency. In the Idaho, SDSU, Texas, Kansas, and A&M games, we struggled to open up holes and struggled with our pulling linemen to get to their blockers on time. This was even more prevalent in the OU game because OU was blowing up almost every single run to the perimeter than involved pulling linemen. If we hadn't had Martinez' running ability early in the season, how many of those huge rushing games would we have had? Whether you attribute this to play-calling or the linemen, our linemen just do NOT play consistent when they are asked to run block without a healthy Martinez.

My biggest gripe, more or less, is that our offensive line has been (imho) the number one reason for stalled drives this year whether it be from penalties or from a lack of execution.

And btw, even though this isn't a drastic difference, two sacks against us on Saturday were not coverage sacks.

Frost was sniffing around the football offices while Bo was hiring this staff. If Bo wanted Frost he would have hired him in 2008.

How dare a former player (and pretty good one at that) be "sniffing around" the football offices. I hope he was escorted out immediately.

I’m just trying to figure out where I said anything about him needing to be escorted out of the Athletic Department. Just showing that he was around during the days that Pelini was putting his staff together yet he was hired. There were several videos on the news where you could clearly see Frost hanging out down in Lincoln during that time.

Thanks for the attempt at making my point out to be something it wasn’t. Gold star!

Using the verbiage "sniffing around" ("to investigate suspiciously") clearly implies something mischievous, like Frost should not have been there. There is nothing wrong with him showing interest in a position here and even actively promoting himself during the hiring process. Now if you claim no negative connotation to the verb "to sniff around" then you are using it differently than the rest of us and there was just a semantical confusion. Thanks for the malevolently sarcastic gold star though.

PS - I never said anything about Frost at OC.

For what it's worth, I see problems for the offense. The three biggest reasons drives have stalled this year are pentalties, fumbles, and dropped passes. The reason the offense seemed to click when Martinez was healthy was because he could overcome poor offensive line play. When he was hurt like Saturday, he got sacked 7 times. The OL is better than last year, but it is a far cry from being where we need it. We have the talent at WR, but unfortunately none of them can catch with any consistency. I don't know that I've ever seen a D1 receiving corps. catch the ball as poorly as ours. I'm not a huge fan of Cotton's, but lets get real: he isn't going anywhere. I have no problem at all seeing Gilmore getting his walking papers.

With Watson on the outs (only hope) Scott should be given the shot to move up to the OC level. We desperately need A coach on the staff with true HUSKER roots. This staff is great dont get me wrong outside the OC job.I think that Pelini would be well served to have a coach that can relate to the programs roots and fans. Sometimes I get the feeling Pelini thinks we as fans are too hard on the staff. Frost would bring a fresh perspective to the staff and good lord the Offense in general. Get on the phone coach!!!!!

GO BIG RED!

10 win season is still good, texas we had issues no complaining about that loss, texas a&m all you already know biggest bullsh#t ever. anyways on to the OU game we killed our selves with turnovers, our offense played terirble and watson needs to gtfo. but anyways bring it on washington AGAIN.we will smash them AGAIN. then AGAIN next year. we will of played them 3 times in 12 months whatta bunch a bs.

I'd want a QBs coach that has coached QBs before....

I like Beck but he's unproven and I think it's far more valuable to have both Beck and Watson on the staff, rather than just one of them. We ship out a guy like Watson, we better ship in a guy with as much knowledge and adaptability to replace him. Cotton can stay as far away from OC as possible, or this staff really. The best anyone's come up with him as an OC is "can't be worse, right?"

I would: fire Gilmore and Cotton, and hire good coaches to replace them that we can work with. I don't presume to know anything about who those guys might be, so I'll just go ahead and say I don't know who the good coaches are or where we might get them, instead of naming the best former players I can think of, based off of nothing.

If Watson leaves, #1 on priority would be a proven OC from somewhere else (but the reality is we would promote Beck, probably) and #2 would be to find the best damn available QB coach in the nation and pay him as much as he wants to get him here. Can't afford to take a step back in that category.

You want to promote a position coach who can't even coach his players on how to hold onto the ball?

The RBs have been waaaay more consistent than the QBs or WRs.

Anyways, I'd be intrigued with Scott Frost as QB coach, Beck as RB coach/OC, Brown as TE/WR coach, Cotton as OL/assistant OC

If you get your wish I hope SF doesn't teach our QBs to throw like he did. Either that or we better get us some WRs with hands coming out of their kneecaps.

You can't always hire someone that is an established coach right away, it just doesn't work like that. You can't expect everyone you interview to have a 30 page long resume of all their previous jobs which exactly match the job description you're hiring into.

Turner Gill wasn't a QB's coach before Tom Osborne hired him. In fact, Gill wasn't even a coach before Tom Osborne hired him. Gill's first couple of students? Tommie Frazier and Brook Berringer. Follow that with Scott Frost and Eric Crouch. That's 3 national championship winning QBs and a Heisman trophy winner.

Experience doesn't mean that much. Being good at what you do matters way more.
