Playoffs

What is plus 1 exactly?

+1 is kind of a mini-playoff format that people have been talking about for quite a while, maybe since the Huskers backed their way into the 2001 MNC game against Miami. In a +1 format the BCS bowls would play, then the after that there would be another game between the highest-ranked of the winners, which would be the "national championship" game.

I think a plus-one would be nice. It would be a final four of sorts. Not really any point in having a full blown playoff where the MAC champion could theoretically have a shot.

Or I guess plus-one means something else. I mean a final four. Top four teams go 1-4, 2-3, and then winner between them.

I could talk about playoff scenarios until my ears bleed. I would give Mark Cuban a big hug for what he said about this subject yesterday (if you didn't hear it - - he said he is no longer concentrating on buying a MLB team, instead he is going to take his billions and back the debate to force a CFB playoff).

I feel our best option is to leave everything in place exactly how it sits now. The difference would be to use the BCS system to determine an 8-team playoff. From my perspective, this solution gives everyone what they want.

1) Nothing changes with the rest of the bowls. The Holiday currently means nothing and would stay that way.

2) The BCS bowls still get there BCS game/money plus will rotate just like the do now with the second round and final game of the playoff. That equals more money.

3) You still get the debate of "who should be team 7 or 8?" instead of the current "who gets in the BCS game that means nothing (TCU, Bosie, etc)?"

4) All bowls can keep their traditions...probably more so than they do now. Example: Rose bowl - Wisconsin vs. non-Pac 12 TCU (I am excited about this game though).

5) The regular season still means everything. You might be able to have 1 loss and make the playoffs but only a few 1-loss teams will get in. Style points still mean something. This is an even better solution when we have years with no unbeatens....the year LSU won with 2 losses. A playoff that year would have been amazing.

The only argument against the scenario above is forcing the kids to play extra games. This is tough. Two solutions to this:

1) Get rid of 1 non-conference game. Problem - what about the teams that don't make the playoffs. All this does is lose money for most programs.

2) Get rid of all conference championship games. I don't think this will ever happen....too much money is made with these games.

To me the system is already in place, only a few tweaks are needed.

A playoff wouldn't fix anything. Even in NCAA basketball playoffs there is still a team that gets left out and a less deserving team gets in solely because they play in a more recognizable conference. A playoff would only create more crying and moaning that certain teams got left out.

Most people consider what you are describing as a good thing. It gives the media its debate and a chance to fill the airwaves with nonsense for weeks and weeks.

This "drama" is good for college football.

For me any sort of playoff system is better than the BCS. Out of all of the years I've watched the bowls this is far and away the least excited I have ever been meanwhile the head of the BCS responding to Mark Cuban's plan said college football and the bowls are at an all time high as far as popularity is concerned. Uh huh.

The BCS is a disservice to college football as a whole and a playoff system of any kind would create excitement where there once wasn't as far as underdog schools are concerned. It's a win/win situation.
