Huskers Draft Thread

Recommended Posts

A bit of a backstory for you. I guess you're right. A lot of teams changed kickers lately. Dallas, Pittsburgh, Minnesota... and that's just the teams I can think of. Should be a good year for Alex to try to get taken. Wonder if he's got a chance to be taken before Mason Crosby, who was the highest drafted kicker I can remember for a while (5th round).

Al Davis took Sebastian Janikowski with the 17th pick overall in 2000.

In the NFL they use brand new balls when kicking. They are a lot harder and many have struggled adapting quickly to it. Kickers in college love kicking beat up old footballs.

Alex goes in the 6th round IMO because the asset of being a hell of a punter, makes teams think of roster space. And he is that good as well.

Alex's value is definitely boosted by the fact he is also a STUD punter. Not very often do you find a specialist that can do both ably, let alone excel at both like he has.

Holy mother of pearl... I guess Davis isn't the punchline of so many draft jokes for no reason. I had no idea he took a kicker in the first round.

Al Davis: Bringing you the finest in crazy for over eight decades now.

New Update from Walter Football

Prince 13th to the Lions (please be right)

Niles and Roy in the 5th

Pierre Allen, Hagg, Henery AND McNeil in the 6th

He doesn't do a 7th round for some reason...

You a Lions fan Gmoose (since before last year)? :)

It'd be pretty sweet to have 3 former Huskers on the field at once for the same team...

I never really had a strong allegiance to an NFL team, I guess the Chargers a little bit but I still had a hard time getting into it. I had to pull for the Lions after they got a Husker who was a star and made a big impact early (we haven't had that in a while).

Now that the Lions have Suh and Schwartz has them making moves, they're a great team to root for IMO, and a great fit for the Husker fans. Seeing Prince go to the Lions with Suh would pretty much seal my allegiance :P

The trend in the last week and a half or so is "experts" thinking Prince goes 7 the the Niners or falls past the Cowboys (usually to the Lions, a few to the Texans).

Personally I'd love to see him go to the Lions, I wouldn't be too upset with the Niners. Houston or Dallas though...meh

+1 GMoose. I noticed that this morning too... Waltrefootball now has him at 13 to the Lions.

I personally don't see him falling that far (especially past Houston, who they had selecting Aldon Smith), but if he does, it would be sweet to see three Huskers tear it up together this fall. Too bad they let Daniel Bullocks walk.

In other draft news, this lockout is really starting to grind my gears. No new CBA= no free agency= my Eagles cannot unload Kevin Kolb for some serious draft pick upgrading. Also, free agency in the NFL is just plain fun. It's fun to watch big name guys don a new uniform and the ensuing power shift.

Chris Collinsworth predicts Prince Amukamara will be a hot commodity:

3) Prince Amukamara Creates More Intrigue than the Quarterbacks

There are two top cornerbacks in this draft, LSU's Patrick Peterson and Nebraska's Prince Amukamara. After those two, the talent at corner really takes a dive. I believe that Patrick Peterson's return skills will make him one of the top picks, but as soon as he is taken the phone lines are going to start buzzing with teams trying to trade up to get Prince Amukamara. Nobody wants to take the corner AFTER Amukamara. Amukamara played almost exclusively bump-and-run man-to-man coverage. He didn't win every battle, but he is the best pure cover corner in this draft. Somebody is going to move up to get him. I will be stunned if the Commissioner doesn't announce a trade before he announces the name Prince Amukamara.

Pat Peterson didn't win every battle, either, but to mention that about Prince makes it seem like he's flawed. He's very much not flawed, and I think people downgrading him in comparison to Peterson will be pleasantly surprised.

Personal anecdote: I got to meet and shake Prince's hand before the Spring Game. For a guy going in the top 15/top 10 of the NFL draft, he is a very humble, very pleasant person. He even remembered some correspondence I'd had about him with Bo last summer, which surprised me. With all the things going on in his life, to remember that about some schmoe fan was cool.

I also met and spoke briefly with Niles Paul at the same time. Another very nice person, and in person he's ridiculously good-looking. Niles has a million-dollar smile if I've ever seen one. If he doesn't make it in the pros he could easily have a career in front of the camera.
