We've got a series with them and will have to endure the excuses about how it doesn't count because they aren't cheating anymore. Haith is alleged to have been personally aware of the shenanigans. Regarding the photo with Benard Thomas: “I met Benard Thomas once, the day he came with us on an all-day boat trip. He was a friend of D.J. [Williams] from back when they both played high school football in California. I remember Benard telling me he played defensive end at Nebraska. It was on my boat, so I paid for everything. We had food and drinks and the usual things for that kind of trip.” Sounds like he took impermissible benefits, but was there as friend of one of the players and had no previous contact with Shapiro. Sports would just give the NCAA their investigative materials there wouldn't be any need for a full-blown investigation, just corroboration. Yahoo! did a fantastic job: In an effort to substantiate the booster’s claims, Yahoo! Sports audited approximately 20,000 pages of financial and business records from his bankruptcy case, more than 5,000 pages of cell phone records, multiple interview summaries tied to his federal Ponzi case, and more than 1,000 photos. Nearly 100 interviews were also conducted with individuals living in six different states. In the process, documents, photos and 21 human sources – including nine former Miami players or recruits, and one former coach – corroborated multiple parts of Shapiro’s rule-breaking. I mean... wow. knapplc Posted August 17, 2011 Share Posted August 17, 2011 A name Big XII hoops fans may be familiar with is involved as well: Allegations: Frank Haith Miami booster Nevin Shapiro alleges that Frank Haith had knowledge of a $10,000 payment the booster made to secure the commitment of basketball recruit DeQuan Jones. Among Shapiro’s allegations: • The booster alleges that in the early summer of 2008, he was made aware by assistant coach Jake Morton that a member of then-recruit DeQuan Jones’ family required $10,000 to ensure the player’s commitment to Miami. Shapiro said he agreed to put up the money, and Morton met the booster at his Miami Beach mansion to pick up the cash. ... In Shapiro’s words • “Coach Haith gave me a call, introduced himself. We then struck up a very close relationship. I guess we went to lunch a couple times. Then we spent some personal nights at Solid Gold [strip club] between him and coach Jake Morton, who is the assistant coach.” Another very damning series of accusations by Shapiro. Yet another excerpt: He knew all along he was breaking the rules. He said everyone at Miami either did also or did everything they could to not know. They gladly took his money and put his name on a student lounge. They let him lead the team out of the tunnel, twice. They let him fly on the team plane for a road game. Or more literally, how long do we have to wait to find out what's going to come of this? There's a procedure, the NCAA just rolled into town on this investigation. I'd expect it to be a year (this would be exceptionally fast) or more before they get to penalties. Steps Before that happens: 1) Concluding Investigation. 2) Notice of Allegations/Infractions (school doesn't have to publicly release they have received them) 3) Time for The School to prepare it's response/defense to the allegations 4) Hearing before the NCAA infractions committee 5) Months for that committee to rule on specific penalties (took around 3 months in USC's case) Quote Link to comment
