Anyone else find it odd that Legate damn near ran stride for stride with Martinez when he took that broken option play to the house? Either Legate is BLAZING for a fullback, or Taylor has lost a step. Or Taylor was jogging lol.

I saw that too. I'm a critic of Taylor, but I have to be fair. On another long run he had he left Legate way way behind. I think he knew he was gone on that play.

I'm kinda worried about SuperRex keeping up with him too. Tmart is gonna have to gear down for him.

Sometimes I think you see what you want to see regarding Taylor as well...

Example?

and, too some extent, don't we all?

there is history and man's interpretation of it, and only one can be right.

This is very true. And I'm certain I fall into this trap as well. Knowing the trap doesn't mean you don't succumb.

I'm just surprised that someone would see some kind of bias, when 99% of the posts I make about Taylor are debunking the myths others post with facts. My mantra with any player, Martinez included, is that I support him, and I want the best player to play. If that happens to be Martinez, fine. If it's Carnes, fine. I've never played favorites.

just to clarify, i was defending you knapplc. i was a harsh t-mart critic, but i think he had a good game, showed development as a passer, and demonstrated more potential as a passer than he has in a long time (maybe since the game against OSU, that was weird).

I know the announcer kept saying he locked onto his receivers but that really wasn't true. More often than not he went through his reads and progressions.

I have watched this game two times already and I'm planning on a third. Second time through I paid particular attention to Taylor's progression because so many people are saying he didn't read the pattern, he just ran. I didn't see that so I focused on it in particular, and you're absolutely right - he did better. He is NOT Tom Brady reading through four options before finally tucking it and running. He still runs before he should a fair portion of the time. But he's going through his progressions better than last year.

I think there are just people who just have a bad taste in their mouths about Taylor, so they see what they want to see - their "schema," to use a psychological term - and they flat ignore or explain away those things which don't match their schema. There is no explaining to these people; they will see what they want to see.

For a day that we stayed basic on both offense and defense and ran things we wanted to work on . .. we weren't horrible. Sure there is lots of room for improvement but those who say we are the same as last year or didn't show any improvement on offense....they don't really know that much about football.

Agreed.

Sometimes I think you see what you want to see regarding Taylor as well... I re-watched the game, and I'm less concerned about the O-Line blocking and more concerned about the blocking of the tight ends and sloppiness at the skill positions (ie. Taylor, Burkhead, Kinnie) and about the fact that Legate is running outside on the option not blocking anyone. It's a throwback to Judd Davies; I used to pull my hair out watching him run outside on the option and not touch a soul. Here's to hoping they find a way to get Turner the ball and clean up the mistakes.

I don't know how many times I yelled at Legate on Saturday. Man...this is one huge reason why not getting Marrow cleared is going to hurt.

What's the deal with Marrow? Sorry if this was discussed elsewhere, but it seemed like they were sure they'd have him cleared and then it just didn't happen... Are they still waiting, or are they sure he won't play this year?

I knew at one time but honestly I've got enough junk in my head I'm a little foggy, but I think this is the jest of it. He transfered twice now and by NCAA he needs to sit a year since he started at DI level and is back at DI, but they are trying to state that the previous transfer was for family reasons (I think there was an illness) so he doesn't have to sit this year out since last year he sat. (At least I don't think he played last year.) All indications (verbally) from the NCAA was this would be fine, but it appears to have hit a snag.

I think you might be onto something there. The options we ran from the shotgun looked pretty different from the I formation stuff.

I remember there were some questions about - how much are we going to show in the first game of the season? It seemed to be quite up in the air. Based on the results, I think we have our answer. We didn't show too much.

Yeah, there was some pistol stuff and the blocking up front looked decent. Mainly because the type of blocking is one in which the o-line hits the defenders just long enough for the speed players to get by. I think that's the type of blocking our o-line can handle. It's not a bash or low blow against them, just what I see from observation. Could they get good at running the 90s style option/power plays? Sure, but I think that would take a better part of this season to get consistent.

Was any of this power option/power running plays called during the spring game? I didn't really watch it, so I wouldn't be the best person to ask, but if I remember from highlights correctly, I didn't see much of these type of formations.

I think Pelini is keeping the "real" offensive scheme close to his vest. He did all summer it seems and why break it out against a team like Chattanooga? Now, whether or not this scheme will be any better, I don't know, but I refuse to believe that what we saw on Saturday was the offense and what they want to accomplish.

I don't know the correct term for this, but what is it called when an offensive linemen dives down towards the legs of a defender (when he's in the tackle box) to try and put him to the ground? It seems like we used to do this a lot when we ran a power run game, but I don't see very much of it anymore. Perhaps we do it and I just don't catch it, however.

That would be a cut block and any more it's pretty risky, because if anyone else hits the defender high it's an automatic 15 yarder (chop block). But we did use it a few times last week iirc, however it wasn't all that effective. It's another one of those things that takes timing, practice and believe it or not a little finesse.

It's reality. I know you and others demand perfection the first nano-second with a new offense, coaches & players. Some of us just know it's not a five minute process.

Who is saying they're writing off the whole year (besides you)?

If by perfection you mean some resemblance of competency and/or progress...guilty as charged for losing my grasp on reality. But, your nano-second was a less than encouraging 60 minute game (practice/scrimage). It's the same duration you will use to declare we are "back" in the coming weeks if there is some dramatically positive change in the offense. That same 60 minutes of gametime will be more than adequate then I'm sure. The 5 minute process you speak of has been in the works for 9 months now (if not longer), though large portions looked to only have been implemented last week...with our most reliable offensive weapon (rex) running around like he was lost - not once but multiple times throughout the game.

I guess you saw a very different game than I did...or you saw the same game and will continue to find excuses for the better part of the season. It's unfortunately what Husker fans have begun to do very well over the last 9 years. Lets see, already we have the "sophomore", "Beck's a 1st year coordinator" and "1st year of this offense" excuses being thrown around. We'll call it Huskerboard Poker. If I can get a "OL injury" or "playing down to competition" and a "freshman running backs" excuse in there I'd have 2 pair. (2, youth excuses / 2, 1st year offense excuses). To hit the royal flush I'd need a "ref's screwed us" excuse - in combination with some that I have yet to think up - but can count on many here to devise as the season progresses I'm sure...

just admit it - it was rough to watch. no one's hitting panic, but not all of us are ignoring the reality that the performance was very discouraging.

BINGO!!!!
