NU Head Coaches - their first four years

Just joking with the Fail man, I am just a college football junky, I watch damned near every game.

My guess is that they will give us a game until late in the game. They are good team, most likely better than we faced this year in preseason other than Washington. With Dyer going to play for them, he must feel there is something there. I think they got beat last night, did not watch the end of the game. One thing for certain, they have a great coach and hypsman type running back. Credit where credit is due.

2 of these coaches improved the win percentage from their predecessor. The BobFather +49% and Bo +16%. Granted some of that improvement was due to the previous derelict in charge but, it improved none the less. And a couple of the coaches who dropped off (TO -16% and Frank -10%) was because the 2 preceding years were extra special. I hate the large margin, no contest losses as much as the next guy but, IMO a person would have to be crazy to be considering pulling the plug on Bo at this point in time. Heck I was more disappointed in some of our wins than I was the Northwestern loss. Something tells me people like AustinHuskr would never be happy unless it was CCG's and NCG's every friggin year. Same type of people tried to ride Osborne out on a rail numerous times too. GD good thing they're in the extreme minority and still are, irregardless of their contrary claims. We've got stuff to fix no doubt but that stuff doesn't magically change with a new staff. Give it some time to develope and quit promoting that we begin again, over and over. If you just can't stand the way things are and where they're headed, the other 95% of us aren't forcing you to be a fan. If you think it is so much easier to do much better than the current staff, maybe you should actually try it from the sidelines and south stadium rather than acting like you're some kind of expert just because you have a TV and a computer. I'm not saying you have to be a sunshine pumper but even a hint of perspective and reality would be nice.

Bo deserves to have two more years to prove himself. He needs to win a CCG or he's gone. It's that simple.

I sure think we'll be in a lot better position to properly evaluate Bo and program progress in another 2 years. I'm not down with the winning a CCG stipulation though. There's too many factors that might not make that representative of the job he is doing. I just need to see them perform better on the field. My requirement isn't any specific record or milestone win. Those things will usually take care of themselves if we put the proper product and attitude on the field. The outings with 2-3 pathetic quarters of HS level football definitely need to stop though.

9 wins is still I think a good number to compare to even in this 12 to 13 game season instead of the 11 and 12 games away back when. The main reason is the number of scholarships one can hand out and the walk on program changes ( I think we have a lower number of coaches now)

And if the ticket sales at the bowl were any indication, we're farther along than I even thought.

The economy had far more to do with poor ticket sales than anything else.

This is one of the sadest times of me being a Husker fan. I never thought that day would come but I'm slowing losing my enthusiasm as a fan..... I find myself now watching more NFL... I watch games like Oregon/WI as if I had dog in the fight. Maybe it's my inner being wanting to watch some good football.....IDK.... but I've NEVER felt this way even during 2007 (bec. I knew Cally was gone)

Wow. I hope this is hyperbole, because if you really think we're worse off now than we were at any time during the Callahan years, your perspective is way off.

The "economy"?

Husker fans were never stopped by Tsunami's but now the economy is in the way.....Whatever.

Yes, 2007 was worse. DUH!

But TO was not in the house. Cally had no backing (and who cares, he sucked). Pederson was the devil. The big difference is we KNEW what was broken.

Now, it's a disaster from top to bottom. I question TO's ability to hire a coach. I question TO's exact definition of "things are going well". I question what exactly is TO's definition of a successful program (see BBall and Baseball aside from football).....I question Bo's basic abilities as a HC AND a DC. Yes I don't think Bo is the genius DC some think he is. You want to see great DC's - go check Michigan, South Carolina, LSU, Bama. Heck even Oregon and WI have better defenses than NU and I don't see any need for that fancy Peso junk that Bo has trade marked. After watching the bowl season and seeing what real football looks like I've gone out and bought the biggest face palm contraption I could get my hands on.

You can drink all the KA you want. I'm off the Bo bus.

And in case you still think this is "hyperbole", go back and re-read the first part of Shatel's article where he talks about Husker angst: http://www.omaha.com...IGRED/701079799

You do realize that Bo more then deserves the assumption of a "defensive genius" if anyone does, right? He has a very proven track record as a DC. All of those teams you listed have more talent then Nebraska on the defensive side of the ball, and I wouldn't be so quick to throw Michigan, South Carolina, and Oregon into the bag of great defenses/ or defensive coordinators....

That Peso "junk" that you speak of is the only thing that kept us from a losing season in 2009, and it was the primary defensive set for one of the best defenses I have ever seen (especially considering the tough circumstances the offense put them in that year).

It comes down to talent. You wanna know the difference between the 2009 team, and the 2011 team? Its replacing Suh, with Steinkuler; replacing Prince/Hagg/Gomes, with Cassidy/Green/Thorell.... It comes down to talent. It's funny how quickly some forget it, but if you give Bo adequate talent, it is flat out scary what he can do with a defense....

Where is this talent that Bo can take advantage of? With the number of players over the last 4 years in the NFL you would think we would be able to get top notch defensive talent. Now it's all on Bo to get recruits for his great defense. Considering that his defense has been gashed this year calling him a defensive genius is a little too far.

In his first 4 years he is not comparable to the other three. He has 9 wins but has way more losses to top 15 teams. That concerns me far more than anything else. Tom played 12 games against top 15 programs and won 6 lost 6, Frank was at 5 and 5. Bo is 3-8, plus has far more blow out losses than the other three.

He won't get the chance because he's an @sshole. You can't expect to keep your job with the way Bo acts unless you start bringing in the trophy's that matter. Right now he's Bobby Knight without the results to justify keeping him if he doesn't win big in the next two years.

If he doesn't win here it will be his fault because of recruiting/developing problems to go with his attitude. Tying your HC career to a WR playing QB like TMart isn't helping either. But it will be interesting to see how he does these next two years with only his own recruits for the first time in his career.

When is the last time NU has beaten a team when we were the underdog? Where we the slight underdog vs Clemson? How about before that...Michigan in 05?

What's REALLY getting old us us only winning the games we are suppose to...and even losing some of those..AND never winning any we aren't suppose to. THAT is the signs of bad coaching IMO.

You're right. Callahan beat every team that we played and were the underdog.....

Obviously it was sarcasm. That doesn't mean people couldn't think BC had a few wins as underdog though.

You shouldn't try so hard w/ your attempts at humor.

Actually is the MIchigan win our most impressive since 2001 OU??

also, I'm looking back and BC did have a couple underdog wins...vs a rated ISU when we weren't rated and same vs A&M. One Bo underdog win I can think of is probably the OU win...when Bradford was out.

update - we may have been the underdog vs Missouri in 2010.

I think people remember the bad, more than the good, and I think BAD losses are a solid indicator of NU fans' current quandary with Bo.

So, using that theory:

Number of 20+ losses in first four years (I did this quickly):

BD -- 2

TO -- 2

FS -- 2

BC -- 8

BP -- 5

I don't think anything is more unpalatable than being uncomepetitive on the field. A loss is fine, if the team is competitive, but big losses are just ugly.

The 2 big losses to WI and MI this year, I think, are the basis for a great deal of the angst in NU fans' minds.

Uuummm.... make that 3 big losses. Even though "just by 17" the loss to SC was about as bad as it gets. The way NU looked in the 2nd half made the 2009 B12C with Zac Lee handing off to Burkhead (only to slam his head into a brick wall play after play for 0 yards)..... look like the NE Patriots and Tom Brady.

The reason for the ANGST in Husker nation is 2 things:

1) No progress. I don't care how you want to slice and dice it but Bo's teams have gotten worse as the season has progressed ever since that 2009 B12C ended. Any coincidence that also happened to be the time that most of BC's players graduated? You can also file this under "lack of player development"

2) BAD recruiting. And I mean B A D! Just ask Cory Raymond.

You can say 'little progress' if you want although I would say some progress, but it is statistically incorrect for you to say that there was no progress. Here are the 2010 stats compared with the 2011 stats. I've bolded the areas where we have shown progress this year. The first number is 2010, second number is 2011:

Since Tom Osborne is the standard everyone like to compare to, let's looks how Tom did in depth in the first four years.

TO's fourth year-Tied unranked LSU, Lost to #17 Missouri, Beat #13 OK St, lost to Unranked IA St, and lost to #8 Oklahoma, Did beat #9 Texas Tech in Astro Bluebonnet Bowl.

1973 9-2-1
