I appreciate the consideration and apology. My wife is a speech language pathologist and I myself spent 9 years in speech therapy for stuttering and a slight lisp. It's a common thing for people to make fun of so I'm pretty used to it, but alot of people don't realize how difficult a speech problem can make things. I was lucky and had a good speech therapist, I ended up working in retail for a long time, a job where I had to talk constantly. Now I'm in corrections so it's not as big of a deal, but it's amazing the diffence a good speech therapist can make in someone's life.

I've had the opportunity to observe and work with speech/language pathologists....it's a pretty interesting field. They can do wonders for people struggling to express and understand language especially after a traumatic brain injury, CVA or something related to that nature that affects motor and sensory function.

Stuttering has to be one of the worst afflictions known, among conditions that don't affect your health.

 

My dad was a serious stutterer. He beat it with help from the National Stuttering Foundation. Yes, there is such a thing. And it worked. He worked with audio tapes back in the 80's and 90's. He used to be unable to hold a conversation, even with his family, without serious problems.

 

Now he can speak in public and regularly riles up the local city council with his grandstanding.

 

I haven't heard Shatel speak, since I am out of state, but it sounds like he has the same problem. I read his articles, though. Often disagree with him, but they are easy to read, at least.

As a Speech/Language Pathologist who works with stutterers everyday, I applaud your dad. I tell my kids: Stuttering is something you do-it isn't who you are. The Stuttering Foundation is a wonderful organization.

Not trying to pick on the guy, but its hard to watch him when he is on Big Red Wrap Up. I do like reading his sports articles in the OWH though.

 

What prompted you to even bring up the stuttering? My wife is a Speech-Language Pathologist and works with kiddos and adults who struggle mightily to overcome the social stigma against those who stutter. Ultimately, Shatel should be applauded for his courage to conduct an audio newscast knowing people are listening and making judgements (e.g., your aforementioned comments) anonymously on a sports thread.

Yeah Shatel isn't great with words and stutters a bit. But he usually makes great points and I've loved reading his articles since I was a kid. "First downs and second guesses..."

As a 35 year old man who has lived in 3 cities and has always purchased the paper in those cities, I still get a little excited when shatel posts an article online. He is better than anyone I have seen in any of the places I have lived (Kansas city, st. Louis). Good at sports, better at telling a story.

Kumbaya my Lord... Dirk is probably correct, We will be most likely watching someone else play in the Big 10 Title game- but who really knows. Cover the spread on Saturday and I will feel a little better.

I like to read a writer that will go out on a limb and make a few bold predictions. Even not so bold, at least they are giving their actual opinion on matters at the OWH instead of parading around on the fence like Journal Star. I can't remember the last time I read something from the LJS sports writers that the whole world didn't already know. I'd be amazed to hear them make some predictions like this. Good read.
