Season isn't over

Recommended Posts

Realistic fans know every year is not a NC year, but when the stars are lined up for a team you expect great seasons. Next year everyone thinks the stars are lined up for the Huskers, so this year everyone was wanting to see the improvement that shows us the staff is building this team to take advantage of these opportunities. We needed to see growth in the lines on both sides, we needed to see a staff that was growing up and learning how and be willing to make adjustments, we needed to see a solid effort for a whole game. IMO we saw none of this. Of course the season is not over, we still have games to play. But for those of us that were expecting to see growth in this unit in the "test games" we already have the answers in UCLA and Ohio St. We already know Michigan is a loss now, we are outclassed on the lines and they have a dynamic running qb. Penn St, Northwestern, and Michigan St are toss ups, and Minnesota is the only one we should flat out win although they are improving and will put up a better fight. I will cheer and enjoy each game just because it's the Huskers, but the season has already given us the answers to the questions we had going in, and I don't like them.

very well said.

Why even play the Michigan game? With the other 3 you mention maybe we just flip a coin, and 'Oh my God' Minnesota is getting better. I'm shaking in my shoes just thinking how disappointing the rest of the season will be. :sarcasm

I will never get back the time I spent reading this drivel.

note that nuhuskeralum said that he would ENJOY each remaining game and root for the team. He did not say anything direct... or even infer that the rest of the season will be disappointing or something to shake in our boots over. It is what it is... our squad is pretty mediocre and the likelihood of winning most of the games is low. But that does not mean we cannot enjoy rooting for the team.

Kick back, enjoy the camaraderie of family and friends and root for the Huskers... irregardless of whether they win or lose.. and enjoy the process. It is just a game. No more. And, as it were, NU is currently not so good at this game. They are still our team. No boot shaking here...

I will say this though... the way we are playing (not the W/L thing)... but the flat, unprepared manner in which the team plays... that is disappointing... yet still rooting for them is fun.

The US didn't give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor- the program is in pieces. I hope we can get it all together and salvage the rest. Historically, we have seen what happens when coach has lost his team. We are on the brink and slouching towards mediocrity. I am still a fan and will continue to tail gate my arse off and buy season tickets.

DAMN!!! All these years and I've believed that the JAPANESE bombed pearl harbor!!!

lol exactly what I thought when I read this post, and then I started thinking about what a terrible, terrible analogy it was as well...

bunch of kids that have never seen the movie animal house? it is a perfect analogy of husker nation right now. we are the deltas.

That was the very first thing I thought of when I read that comment.. guess some missed that one.

I don't understand why everyone is all up in arms about this loss and throwing in the towel for the season. Did anyone circle the Ohio St. game at the beginning of the year and say "Oh, that's a game we'll win for sure"? I doubt it. Everything that happened on Saturday night we have seen before. Some people are living in fantasy land if they expected a different outcome.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Bo's defenses own pocket passing QB's and get dominated by QB's that can run. This isn't a secret. We're going to beat Northwestern, lose to Michigan, and then (after another blowup on the message board about how "shocking" it was that Denard ran all over us) we'll win the last four. 9-3 regular season, Michigan wins the B1G. Another loss to an SEC team in a bowl game, and a 9-4 record to end the season. Any higher expectations than this are unrealistic, and lower expectations are due to bitterness over this loss. People need to start realizing what this team is and what they're capable of, and after seeing all of the score predictions coming into this game, a lot of fans are way off.

This is what's wrong, we fail and people accept it, when did we start accepting the flaws of our program and not do anything about it? Hey we're bad against running Qb's in Bo's system but it's ok we're going to lose those games because we'll beat a team that runs a pro style offense. Hey Bo wanna face teams that only run that type of offense go coach in the NFL. Adjustments need to be made, plain and simple and after 5 years Bo won't make them.

Well, there isnt going to be any coaching changes during the season. In fact, it's probably not happening after this season either. Nor are there going to be any major philosophical changes. So I suggest you just cool it, relax and enjoy the rest of the season before you have an annurism. Nebraska football isnt the only thing in life, though it almost is. Had this fact engrained into my head after the loss to Oklahoma in the big 12 title game. I was miserable and then 3 days later had to watch my grandmother pass away in a hospital and realized that it's just not that big of deal anymore. I love it yes. I jump on here everyday to post and read opinions, bicker with a disgruntled fan or two and be on my way. But I refuse to let the success and dismay of Nebraska football gray my hair. To concern yourself with lowering expectations this, and accepting flaws and a whole bunch of other stuff that you literally have ZERO control over is only going to cause you bitterness and heartache. I'm as loyal and diehard as they come. Listen to sports nightly every night. all 12+hours of radio game coverage every saturday. Make most to all home games, and give up fun stuff all year round to do so becuase I do love it. But you cannot let it gray your hair.

EDIT: I shoudnt've have quoted MT on this. This is a shoutout to all the bitter fans here screaming for heads and change this and expectations that. It's not worth it.

I'm not lowering my expectations, nor am I OK with where this program is right now. I've just come to accept what this team is right now and am hopeful that changes are made moving forward (personnel and strategy, not coaching changes). I just couldn't believe that people seemed shocked with this loss when it's the fourth time we've been scorched by a mobile QB in the last two years. Things aren't going to change this season, and the only way it will is if we get a defensive line that can make a difference. Right now we have TWO three-star DE commits and ZERO DT commits, so it doesn't look like that will be happening anytime soon.

Pardon my pessimism, but I've been optimistic for 5 years and it looks to me like it will be another 2-3 before things turn around.

If we go 8 - 4 and the two losses are hard fought, I think we'll be at that magical place where standards and expectations are in synch.

The reason optimism is so difficult is because the defense has reverted to a Cosgrovian state despite hiring a defensive specialist as HC. This is a defense stocked with Bo's hand-picked recruits, now in their Senior year, and it's hard to see improvement coming down the pipeline.

Also, let's not engage in selective memory. This team did not come out flat against Ohio State. They came out on fire, offensively and defensively. And when Osborne nailed the kicker on the fake punt, it was Ohio State that looked flustered and helpless. The Huskers were firing on all cylinders.

Unfortunately there were three more quarters to play.

But hey, we did charge out in the second half and make it 35 - 31.

This team has its moments. It can win any game left on the schedule, or lose any game.

And when it comes to diehard fans doubting their own team, Michigan takes a back seat to no one. They're in a funk about this season, too, and would never presume a win against Nebraska.

6-0 is not going to happen. Don't kid yourself. Know when the last time we went on a six game winning streak in a season? 2001. And I don't see anywhere near that level of talent on this team, I don't see the leadership, and I don't see the mental toughness. We have a better chance of losing out, than winning out.

Someone pointed out that we are 6-5 in the last 11 games ... any better reason for so many people to be in an ugly mood?

If things don't change I don't know if things will get much better in 2-3 years

I don't know how this season will play out--3-3 sounds about right to me--but I will say this past game felt like the beginning of the end. Hope I'm wrong. 5th year HC and still the ghosts of bad, bad losses getting worse. The end might still take a long time to play out. Coach's personality and image is going to work against him.

What do I want as a fan? A freaking football team that doesn't get embarrassed at every big boy stadium they visit. Maturity. Confidence. Mental toughness. Did I mention mental toughness?

Last year we lost to Wisconsin, Northwestern, & Michigan.

Last year we beat Ohio State & Michigan State.

This year we've already beaten Wisconsin. I have a feeling that we rebound after this much needed bye week and get the best of Northwestern on the road, then return home and play our best football of the year against Michigan in a crucial Legends Divison showdown.

Obviously, we've already lost to Ohio State. So to complete the circle of the Big Ten, we lose to Michigan State in East Lansing in a close one.

Basically, in the first two years in the conference, we split all of our big games. It's setting up that way so far and it's not unrealistic to see it ending up that way, IMO.

I would be totally fine with that outcome if it allowed us to go to Indy because of the tiebreaker win against the Wolverines. (Assuming Sparty drops a couple more conference games, of course.)

Yep, I know, I'm awfully optimistic. What can I say? I believe in Bo, this coaching staff, and this team.

i like what you said, but think we beat msu. they have a pretty bad offense that i think bo and this team will be able to handle. i think we beat them in a similar game as last year.

I love how we match up with them too. I would love to think that we win out, but that's a pretty big stretch for this team. What do you think happens in the last 6 games?
