QMany
i still can't believe espn sat on this. no wait, yes i can. they play favorites. (erin andrews, ben rothlisberger, nd). They definitely have some explaining to do. ESPN is a f*cking joke. Quote Link to comment
sd'sker
pat forde, everyone: "Notre Dame presents believable explanation for Manti Te'o girlfriend hoax" it's hard to read that earnestly. Quote Link to comment

JTrain
Having trouble breaking down this paragraph: One mark—who had been "introduced" to Lennay by Tuiasosopo—lasted about a month before family members grew suspicious that Lennay could never be found on the telephone, and that wherever one expected Lennay to be, Ronaiah was there instead. Two sources discounted Ronaiah's stunt as a prank that only metastasized because of Te'o's rise to national celebrity this past season. Either poorly written or I'm missing something. tschu
Also, how is this not a feature (picture) story on ESPN.com's front page? Combination of A) They don't want to make themselves look silly for 110% buying in on the story for the title game B) They don't want to give Deadspin the credit C) They want sports to be the MOAST POSITIVE UPLIFTING THING ON EARTH!!! D) Jeremy Schaap hasn't had time to formulate a semi-coherent story yet. Basically, they either did not have the story, or hid the story for whatever reason. Now they are going to try to downplay the story as a result; however, they look awful right now because the story has already become much, much bigger than ESPN. Quote Link to comment
JTrain
whose family members grew suspicious? "found on the telephone"? Who was expecting Lennay to be somewhere and why? Quote Link to comment

This was before that quote: "Was this Lennay Kekua? We spoke with friends and relatives of Ronaiah Tuiasosopo who asserted that Ronaiah was the man behind Lennay. He created Lennay in 2008, one source said, and Te'o wasn't the first person to have an online "relationship" with her." Quote Link to comment

JTrain
Yes but the part I quoted is very foggy. Quote Link to comment
JTrain
They've covered it a lot on TV. Not sure why it's not as prominent on their site. Probably because they don't have any great thing to add so they're waiting for someone to write something insightful before they show something as a featured story. Quote Link to comment
sd'sker
here is what i still struggle with: a lot of college kids have gf's, but how many are so inspirational? sure, it is not impossible, but how improbably is car accident, cancer, die the same day as gma? te'o said that he should have been more cautious? he never once flew her out to a game? she had cancer and he decided it was not worth visiting her? she was in a car accident, still no time to visit? at the very least, he was the worst bf of all time.
