Linebackers - Who Steps Up?

Recommended Posts

i don't care what scheme we use..........when you give up 400 yards to a one guy, you got major problems....

That's a gross over simplification of the issues the last few years.

dude, this is symptomatic of a bigger problem here........and you are correct, for the last few years our run D has been shredded! this needs fixed before we have a snowball's chance in hell of being relevant in the B1G.....

Dude.....Have you ever wondered why we were able to keep QBs to their worst passing performances just about every game but got shredded by any team we went against with a decent running offense?

Hmmmm.....

Bo's scheme was geared towards stopping the pass. He routinely loaded the defensive back field with DBs and left the defensive front to fend for themselves short handedly. I remember seeing pictures some media member posted of the Wisconsin game where WI was in a 3rd and short and we have only one or two LBs on the field and they were all way off the LOS and I think WI had three TEs on the field. On that play, they ran for a long TD. Is that because of the lack of talent at the LB position? Heck no....that's coaching and scheme. But...hey....that one WR on the field sure wasn't going to burn us long.

Why the heck would we recruit more LBs when we are only going to play one or two at a time?

Our run defense was structured so that if one player made simply one wrong step, they were burned bad with no help behind them because our entire defensive back field was playing prevent defense 20 yards down field. But...hey....we kept that QB to 40% passing. woo hooo. Remember the issue with Davie in the WI game where he made a simple mistake on run defense and WI ran for 50-60 yards on that play? Bo absolutely went bonkers in him for a long time on the side lines (to hell with what else was going on on the field). Was he chewing out a guy who was also supposed to be there to help out behind him? No. Was he chewing out an LB that didn't get to the side lines in time? No. That's because on that play there wasn't going to be any help. It was up to Davie to make that play. If he doesn't make an open field tackle against one of the best RBs in the nation, it's a 50 yard run.

So much for stopping the run first.

Rose is probably the best we got, after that this group is average at best.

I understand it's a thin group, but I'm not so sure the group is average. I think they will thrive with a different approach to how to play from Bray and it will be refreshing. I think we'll see a better result because of it.

In Pelini's 7 years, this was an area that was consistently mishandled. Maybe there is a better word for it. Mismanaged maybe? Even though it's not in the distant past I do think we will see improvement moving forward.

I don't see how anyone can make a judgement about our current front 7 based on the differences between the past scheme and the new scheme. I think there are reasons to be optimistic with players like VV, Collins and possibly Ivey. I don't see how negative judgements can be made.

This group is going to be asked to do very different things than they did last year. And, that's a good thing.

Being as thin as we are at LB, are there any walk-ons who people are talking about?

The thing that perplexes me is how we can have 18 guys on the roster listed as LBs, and yet we are thin. LINK And I agree that we are thin. I mean, we're just sitting around guessing as to who is going to play for us this year. But how can that be with 18 LBs? Did we really have that many recruiting misfires during the Pelini era? Didn't he developing the guys we brought in at LB?

That's why I'm asking about walk-ons. I'm assuming there is a large percentage of those 18 that are walk-ons. Is there someone like Roach that is stepping up and might have a chance at playing time? It's a perfect situation for a walk-on to see some playing time for depth.

To me this is an odd thing as well. 18 candidates but everyone acts like there are only 4 Real candidates. I'm not the coach or anything but you would think that one or two of the other 14 would be able to step up.

Michael Rose-Ivy is supposed to save us @ LB, right? If not, we're in trouble--again.

I expect Newby or Young to surprise

They gotta go thru the learning curve, which will take most the season, IMO. Rose-Ivy may need some of that too. I think we have issues again at this position. Bando really needs to up his game, but that's 'iffy' as well. Just not seeing a great group here this year, maybe '16.

It will probably be Rose Bando Santos. I could see Dedrick Young working his way into the LB rotation as the season goes on. Would be a solid lineup but we have no depth at all. LB is about consistency and it seems like Newby has all the tools but it just hasnt clicked for him yet. You cant have busts assignment or gaps at LB
