Linebackers - Who Steps Up?

Rose is probably the best we got, after that this group is average at best.

I understand it's a thin group, but I'm not so sure the group is average. I think they will thrive with a different approach to how to play from Bray and it will be refreshing. I think we'll see a better result because of it.

In Pelini's 7 years, this was an area that was consistently mishandled. Maybe there is a better word for it. Mismanaged maybe? Even though it's not in the distant past I do think we will see improvement moving forward.

I don't see how anyone can make a judgement about our current front 7 based on the differences between the past scheme and the new scheme. I think there are reasons to be optimistic with players like VV, Collins and possibly Ivey. I don't see how negative judgements can be made.

This group is going to be asked to do very different things than they did last year. And, that's a good thing.

Being as thin as we are at LB, are there any walk-ons who people are talking about?

The thing that perplexes me is how we can have 18 guys on the roster listed as LBs, and yet we are thin. LINK And I agree that we are thin. I mean, we're just sitting around guessing as to who is going to play for us this year. But how can that be with 18 LBs? Did we really have that many recruiting misfires during the Pelini era? Didn't he develop the guys we brought in at LB?

That's why I'm asking about walk-ons. I'm assuming there is a large percentage of those 18 that are walk-ons. Is there someone like Roach that is stepping up and might have a chance at playing time? It's a perfect situation for a walk-on to see some playing time for depth.

no, Pelini didn't do a very good job recruiting or developing LB's........we flat don't have 3 kids that can play together or have the experience.....we got gashed last season in the running game, big time..........has everyone forgotten how pitiful we were at stopping the run? huge problem

Three of those 18 are freshman that won't be here until the Fall. Of the remaining 15, I believe (at least) nine are walk-ons.

You mean like when that guy ran 400 yards against us in one game last November?

/ And here I was just beginning to convince myself that that was a bad dream.

Our lack of being able to stop the run had just as much, if not more, to do with scheme than personnel.

i don't care what scheme we use..........when you give up 400 yards to a one guy, you got major problems....

That's a gross over simplification of the issues the last few years.

dude, this is symptomatic of a bigger problem here........and you are correct, for the last few years our run D has been shredded! this needs fixed before we have a snowball's chance in hell of being relevant in the B1G.....

BANDO!!!

Josh+Banderas+Nebraska+v+Michigan+State+

I agree. I think Banderas is in for a huge season. Can't wait to see Micheal Rose back out there too.

As much as we are hurting for depth at linebacker, I think our starting bunch is going to be one of the better groups in the Big Ten.

He can only get better, one hopes. He looked 'soft', slow, and out of position most of the time last year.

Interesting tidbit from Sipple about why they might like Bando at MIKE:

However, with Roach injured, Banderas started the Holiday Bowl and produced a team-leading 14 tackles. It was a solid performance -- good enough to catch Banker's eye. Banderas has good size and speed. And keep in mind that in Banker's scheme, the middle linebacker is asked to run free, to make plays sideline-to-sideline, meaning speed and athleticism is more important than it was in Pelini's scheme.
