And people wonder why the US is so divided

Recommended Posts

The news today regarding the campus shooting is horrific. It's hard to describe in words the sadness many American feels when any tragedy like this happens. What is even more horrific, however, is that within a matter of hours...not days...hours, this President goes before the American people to make a political argument about gun control, and openly calls out that he is speaking to politicize the tragedy.

This President has done a great deal to divide this nation moreso than any other President in US History, and its moments like this that deepens the divide. Those affected by this tragedy are still in shock, trying to deal with what just happened to a love one, trying to find answers, and rather than having the President there to offer his condolences, they are victims again of his decision to go on a political rant.

Mr. President...where is the anger in your voice when Ferguson burned to the ground after many of your supporters helped incite the riot? Where is the anger in your voice when many innocent police officers have been killed in recent months due to the propaganda being spewed by your supporters....these same police officers that risked their lives today to rush to the scene of this horrific tragedy. Maybe for a moment you could put your political ideology aside and start acting like a real President, one that we can be proud of.

I had the same reaction as President Obama. When are we going to be able to have a serious political conversation about gun control laws? How many more tragedies is it going to take before a change? Or are we meant to shrug our shoulders and say "Hey, what you gonna do", and accept these random mass shootings as a regular fact of life in the United States?

Yes, it's a tragedy, but it's not one that only affects the victims. I'm not surprised, but kind of amazed, that they are always the ones appealed to or used in an attempt to shout down gun control conversation.

How nice of you to wait 10 hours....

Or maybe you actually are posting in defense of the families and not using it as a chance to critique the President?

Hey, this was a national NEWS story that all of us were unified in our responses....UNTIL this President chose to make it a political statement. There certainly are times and places for all sorts of arguments, but to make such an argument within hours of this tragedy is beyond words. Do you support him exploiting a tragedy in this manner within hours of the tragedy happening?

Millions of Americans own guns and are NOT going into schools and shooting others. Somebody who is mentally ill commits crimes like we saw today, and it doesn't matter if its a gun, a bomb, a knife, or some other weapon, if a person is determined to do harm, they are going to find a way.

Another shooting in another "Gun Free Zone"

Making stricter gun laws only hinders the responsible ones ability to defend themselves. Does anyone seriously think taking guns away is going to make guns go away?

I see it like drugs, the people that want them will get them...or, as bnilhome said, make a bomb, or something else.

Because criminals follow laws right?

Exactly Decked. Gun control advocated seem to think that criminals will stop being criminals if laws are put into place. A criminal is not going to stop harming others, just as a drug addict it not going to stop smoking it up because laws say many drugs are illegal.

I'm sorry but it is getting to the point where it is nigh impossible to talk about gun control without being within a 48 hour window of a highly publicized gun crime. What happened is a tragedy. Let us prevent future tragedies by invoking some actual gun control in this country.

If Americans really wanted to make a difference and send a message, they should boycott any Hollywood producers that make movies involving any sort of gun violence, as well as the mainstream networks like CBS and others for having so many television shows depicting gun violence (like Criminal Minds, CSI, etc...) as well as X Box 360, Playstation, and video game makers for depicting violence. The gun is just the weapon of choice, but the criminal has to get the idea to commit the act from somewhere, and those ideas come from common entertainment mediums.

Some final thoughts for the night. This is indeed a divisive subject, and I don't want to set off a firestorm with bad feelings.

But why must it always be literally every other thing except for the exact status quo of gun laws in this country? And why must that status quo never come up for review, least of all in the aftermath of (yet another) mass public shooting?

In the end, I know it's going to be impossible for some of us to see eye to eye. I'm not sure why that is or where it comes from, but anyway. We do all agree that we would like less of these events to happen, so if that's the only common ground we can get, let's start there.

I don't believe it comes from video games/movies. I believe it comes from a society that pushes selfishness. Selfishness produces pride, not love.

Selfishness divides people. Selfishness causes rejection of others. Everything in this country in the mainstream is about "you". What can YOU do for yourself. We don't celebrate stories of giving in the media.

It's not something I think can be fixed with government. I think people need to learn to turn the other cheek, I think people need to have better skills regarding empathy. I think it's important to share excesses with those who don't have much but no freeloading.

I'm a conservative, but there are many things that I view are important that may seem sort of "socialist" but, I've always grown up thinking that it should be a responsibility of the people to be the "good samaritan". Not the government making it mandatory.
