ColoradoHusk
I am somewhat of a uniform geek, especially when it comes to the Huskers. I guess in the 1980 Sun Bowl, Nebraska wore two different jerseys, made my two different manufacturers. One of the jerseys included a large "NEBRASKA" across the front, above the numbers (much like the long-time Oklahoma jerseys have "SOONERS"). This jersey is one that I have never seen before, and it's pretty interesting to me. Here are some links to photos of the jerseys. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Cycbpm9XgAAHdd7.jpg:large https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CydWY7UUUAAvMDt.jpg https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CydVXLPVQAE7FAg.jpg 2 Quote Link to comment

You can tell those old jerseys are much lower quality compared to what teams wear today. Quote Link to comment
knapplc
Those look like tear-away jerseys. 1 Quote Link to comment
ColoradoHusk
It's also interesting that the Russel jerseys (without the NEBRASKA) don't have a Sun Bowl patch, while the Champion jersey with the NEBRASKA does have a Sun Bowl patch on the shoulders. Quote Link to comment
husker98
I bet there's an interesting story behind why this happened. Maybe one of our 1000+ journalists can get on it and investigate Quote Link to comment
CheeseHusker
Wow, those Champion jerseys are so unlike anything Nebraska has worn at any time. The other, more plain ones are more consistent with that time period. I've been trying to find footage of this game but have never seen any apart from some really grainy coaches film. Did they have names on the back? Quote Link to comment
suh_fan93
Pretty cool topic. Here is the 1980 Sun Bowl. (SAN DIEGO CHICKEN ALERT AT 2:50) Those jersey's look like your basic old school mesh jerseys. I remember wearing those in hs lol. Tear aways back in the day were kind of cool to me too. 1 Quote Link to comment

Did they have names on the back? I remember that back in the day, the Huskers only put the names on the road jerseys. Their reasoning was that for home games, too many kids were suited up, so it was logistically too many jerseys to put names on. I don't think names were on the jerseys for this game, but I could be wrong. I can't tell from the pictures I linked, and I haven't watched the YouTube video. Quote Link to comment

Since you are a uniform geek I am assuming you have seen the site I will post below. Of all the uniforms over the years my favorite is the 1995 uniform with no stripe on the pants and the short jerseys that show the six-packs/guts of the players. I think when the D was wearing that uni, they seemed to have more swagger. here's the link https://sites.google.com/site/nebraskafootballhistory/uniforms Quote Link to comment
huskered17
Ended up watching the whole game.lol GBR!!! Quote Link to comment

I thought that was such a clean and fast look for those mid-90s teams. One thing that I wish would come back is the "cream" colored helmet. I think it was Pederson who had them go to the brighter-white helmets, but I grew up watching the Huskers with helmets that weren't "bright white" and had a cream hue to it. I thought it was a nice nod to the official school colors of scarlet and cream. Quote Link to comment

knapplc
I asked the guys at Hail Varsity and they pointed me to this site: LINK Yesterday’s Ticker included an item about how Nebraska wore two different jersey designs in the 1980 Sun Bowl. Brett Baker tracked down a player from that game, Randy Huebert, and asked him about the mismatched jerseys. The gist appears to be that new jerseys were ordered for the game, but many of them didn’t fit particularly well, so many players stuck with their old jerseys. 2 Quote Link to comment

That was still back when NU fielded a freshman(JV) team -- I wonder if these players got to travel to the bowl game and these were their jerseys? Quote Link to comment
