zoogs
Why? I'm sure it's also not our best technology. Export editions are never quite the same as domestic. A sale like that looks completely routine to me. Link to comment
BigRedBuster
I know it's routine. I just would prefer us to have our military equipment and not someone who could someday be either an enemy or selling it to our enemies. Just because it's routine doesn't mean I have to like it. 1 Link to comment
zoogs
Ah, I see. So does this generally apply to all military exports -- inferior versions as they are -- or only to India? It seems like India is a fairly important strategic ally. They're a bulwark against both China and Pakistan. Link to comment
Moiraine
Washington (CNN)Revised US military options for North Korea have been prepared and are ready to be presented to President Donald Trump, two US military officials told CNN. http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/28/politics/north-korea-trump-military-options/index.html "I hardly ever escape a day at the White House without the President asking me about North Korea and how it is that the United States is responding to that threat," CIA Director Mike Pompeo told MSNBC's Hugh Hewitt this past weekend. "It's very much at the top of his mind." Trump last week also indicated he is becoming more concerned. "The North Korean regime is causing tremendous problems and is something that has to be dealt with, and probably dealt with rapidly," he said. Just curious what other people's opinions are. Do you think North Korea is more of a threat now than they were 10 years ago? 1 Link to comment

There is also no way that Kim is dumb enough to launch a missile strike on a South Korean or Japanese city as it would bring his swift demise. No threat whatsoever. Link to comment
zoogs
Op-ed: Rex Tillerson is destroying the State Dept: http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/06/29/how-rex-tillerson-destroying-state-department-215319 Tillerson’s actions amount to a geostrategic own-goal, weakening America by preventing America from showing up.State’s growing policy irrelevance and Tillerson’s total aversion to the experts in his midst is prompting the department’s rising stars to search for the exits. The private sector and the Pentagon are vacuuming them up. This is inflicting long-term damage to the viability of the American diplomacy—and things were already tough. State has been operating under an austerity budget for the past six years since the 2011 Budget Control Act. Therefore, when Tillerson cuts, he is largely cutting into bone, not fat. The next administration won’t simply be able to flip a switch and reverse the damage. It takes years to recruit and develop diplomatic talent. What Vietnam did to hollow out our military, Tillerson is doing to State. Link to comment

zoogs
https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2017/07/trump-speech-poland/532866/ In his speech in Poland on Thursday, Donald Trump referred 10 times to “the West” and five times to “our civilization.” His white nationalist supporters will understand exactly what he means. It’s important that other Americans do, too. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/trumps-dangerous-thirst-for-a-clash-of-civilizations/2017/07/06/fb5398ea-6282-11e7-a4f7-af34fc1d9d39_story.html?utm_term=.448c24540905 But viewing the fight against terrorism as some kind of civilizational Armageddon is wrong. Trump seems to view himself as the West’s defender against 1.6 billion Muslims, almost all of whom want only to live in peace. We need a capable president, not a crusader in chief. This turn of events is horrifying to watch unfold. ---------- More on that Japan/Europe trade deal: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/07/06/europe-and-japan-announce-trade-deal-to-rival-nafta/?utm_term=.d64dc9922733 “Japan and the European Union will hoist the flag of free trade high amidst protectionist trends,” Abe said in a news conference Thursday.
