For me though, most of the movie felt like it was trying to tell me I should care about her rather than help me actually care about her. And then the relationship development itself just felt disjointed. They apparently had off and on flings over the years that never worked out but now this time it's gonna work? They made a point to tell us that but then never go much further (IIRC). And then he goes on a potential one-way trip mission after having reconnected with this lifelong love, only to return to her apparent abandonment (couldn't even leave a note/text him?) but don't panic everyone because GOTCHA 30 sec. later she's back looking fine in front of a sports car in a weird 'surprise she does love you' moment. She did encourage him to get back into the fold of the mission once Iceman was gone, which helped her story and their development, but then why does she just go MIA at the end? Felt like more of a trope to get me to think 'aww his gf dumped him' rather than to actually develop their love story. I fully accept this is a Tom Cruise action movie so I wasn't expecting a great romance plot line but it just all felt a bit forced and a little awkward. I think they only had a couple goals with Penny Benjamin. 1- they wanted him to have a love interest and 2- they wanted another tie back to the original. Well and 3, a babe in the movie. I guess in a movie like this I didn’t expect much relationship or character development for her so what they did seemed fine to me. Like you said, we wanted to eat popcorn and watch jets go pew pew at each other. Quote Link to comment
teachercd
I just watched it (online, illegally, because I am a badboy) Okay, if you took a syringe full of viagra and stuck it into my johnson (which is not long and distinguished) I would not get as hard as I am right now. That movie is great, it would be a hit even if it was part I but it is a fantastic sequel. I can see why Hangman, who auditioned for the part of Rooster, ended up being handpicked by Cruise to get a bigger part instead of just not being in the movie. I don't think it is better than the original ONLY because the original gave us Mav, Goose, Iceman and Slider...and a better soundrtack. In fact, I would have just reused the original soundtrack for this movie. Quote Link to comment
nic
Loved this movie. Paid to see it twice. Haven’t done that in many years. Quote Link to comment
teachercd
This movie is killing the box office 15 weeks after coming out! There is no way they don't make a part III. Quote Link to comment

WWG1_we_GBR
Loved the movie. From the opening flight deck scene, they had me. The fact they stayed in their lane and didn't get crazy with the storyline sealed the deal. For very different reasons (so please try to take this at face value and don't read too deeply), this movie is on par with Godfather, Part II for me as among the best sequels ever made. (Not saying it is Godfather II-level story/plot/etc., just that as a sequel, it lived up to the original as well, if not better than the original) Quote Link to comment

MyBloodIsRed16
I guess I need to watch it again. It was a good movie but didn't make me all wet in the pants like some people. Was the cover on his motorcycle covered in dust to signify that it had been sitting for a long time or was it because its in a dusty hanger? I feel like they were trying to show that he was taking it out for old times sake without an oil change or replacing the tires that probably have dry rot. Quote Link to comment

Yes, in a movie like this there are many head-scratchers. The point was to show disuse in my opinion. Did you know the P-51 is his own plane? K Holmes bought it for him. He flew the entire cast prior to shooting. Quote Link to comment

I've seen him fly other celebrities in another small plane about the size of a P51 but modern. I took it as he just took the cast flying Quote Link to comment

knapplc
Cruise's P51 is a two-seater. 2 Quote Link to comment
