Something I heard on 1620 this week...

Recommended Posts

So I forget if it was Damon Benning or Greg Sharpe who said it, but they threw out an interesting theory that I kinda wanna know how you guys weigh in on it.

Tommie Armstrong, big arm QB from Cibolo. I've watched the vids, the guy has the arm and seems like the experience to run our offense and according to everyone on the team, he gets better and better every week.

Anyhow, on 1620 this week Damon or Greg (forget who said it) said something to the effect of "Taylor Martinez will start at QB in 2013, but if he shows signs of struggle again, and Tommie A doesn't get a shot...Tommie will not be at NU the following year." When I heard this, I panicked. I kept thinking how bad it would be to lose a great talent like that. It's been bugging a ton this week. It's not that I don't respect Taylor, in fact, he's been our guy when we had no one to hang our hat on and has shown so much heart all 3 years he's started...but when we have a complete QB like Tommie (and possibly another one coming in Johnny Stanton) I just hope that, next year during the spring there actually is a competition for the starting spot. I would hate to see good player go on to bigger better things elsewhere because they aren't getting a shot.

Your thoughts?

You lost me on these two comments..............the kid hasn't played ONE down as a college QB yet he's a "complete QB" and "seems to have the experience to run our offense." Thank god I'm a mod or I might get my first warning level increase with this thread with what I really want to say, but won't.

TAYLOR IS NOT THE PROBLEM!!!! THE DEFENSE IS!?!? WHY CAN'T SOME OF YOU GET THAT THROUGH YOUR ******* HEADS?! It's completely baffling to me.............

It isn't really about getting Tommy experience as it is about getting anyone who runs the Wildcat best to run it. We could use some consistency on offense. When we get into 2nd and short or if we're at 1st & 15 or any of a number of different situations, we can throw a guy out there who runs a mean zone read like Rex and get a few reliable yards.

I put Tommy and Jamal's name up as well because they might offer a more legitimate passing threat out of that formation than Rex, but really whoever runs the ZR best probably could get the nod. ZR appears to be a fairly small part of the offense right now and I think we could expand it that way. We'd do well with it.

Getting Tommy 20 snaps a game isn't a waste though, if it really came to that. And it would set up a good competition going forward. I don't know if Tommy is needed for it though. Depends on Rex and Jamal. I feel like between the two of them, they could handle it and we can save the redshirt. Maybe Tommy's that darn good though, I don't know.

Martinez has completed 67% of his passes.

He's 13th in the nation in Pass Efficiency.

He's 39th in the nation in Total Offense.

He's 14th in the country in Points Responsible For.

Why would you take this guy off the field? For kicks and giggles?

you're facts are drowning out the tolls, keep blaring the truth and eventually they will get drowned out.

The defense is hemorrhaging yards and points on a Cosgrovian scale and we've got another thread going about Taylor Martinez.

Martinez has completed 67% of his passes.

He's thrown 4 INTs vs. 14 TDs.

He's 13th in the nation in Pass Efficiency.

He throws an INT 3% of the time he goes back to pass.

He's 39th in the nation in Total Offense.

He's 14th in the country in Points Responsible For.

Meanwhile, the defense is:

92nd in the country in Rush Defense

49th in Total Defense

73rd in Scoring Defense

32nd in Pass Efficiency Defense

Thank god we've identified Martinez as the problem, and thank god we're ready to bench him for the next guy. Thank god we're bitching because this is the best we have.

The Husker fans who think that Taylor is a good QB are the same ones that convince themselves every year that we have a good shot at winning the conference title and going to a BCS game.

The Husker fans who think our main problem is our qb are the same ones that convince themselves every year they actually know something about cfb. They don't. They never will.

We gave up 63 points to OSU. 63! That loss is on the defense. Period.

Taylor turned the ball over 4 times, and OSU happened to win by 4 scores. It's on Taylor as much as it's on the defense. But I still think it's silly to bench him over it. Every QB has bad games. Every. Single. One.

So you want to be texas tech and rely on the QB and offense to score 56 points a game?

That's stupid.

So you throw away the bad game he has, So also throw away the stats agaisnt the high school teams we play and your left with UCLA and Wisconsin games

Taylor at UCLA goes 17-31 for 158 and an int, rips off one 92 YD td.

Taylor vs wisconsin 17-29 for 181 and 2 TDS, runs 107 YDs for 2 TDs

Tayler at OSU 15-25 for 214 1TD 3 INT, runs 40YDs for 2 TD

58% throwing agaist teams with a pulse, Which is still respectable, but notice his interceptions are in both of our losses, I have never said the defense isn't part of the problem, but Taylor needs to show some consistancy.

Maybe if our defense could stop a "high school" team, TM wouldn't have to try to pull plays out of his ass to score.

fix the defense

Your right,about the defense.

We all thought that with the start Martinez had as a freshman, that we were set for four years. I know I did. Who knows how far along he would have been without that ankle injury. Took him a year and a half to truly get over it, but he has gotten better, even with some of the lapses at crucial times. I would hate to see what the scores would be without him at q/b. We don't have anyone else ready to start over him, and Armstrong will only get better if he gets to sit out his red shirt. With Martinez leaving after next year, if Armstrong is going to be the one to take over in 2014, he will see plenty of action next year, or that's the way it is supposed to work, right???

Don't think anyone else, could have brought us back against Wis. He may never get his passing motion down pat, but this team needs to strap their saddle to him for the next year and a half. We are probably in for a few more rough rides ahead.

GBR!!!

No. Not sure where you got that idea. And yes, it is stupid. All I really want to see from the offense is improvement in protecting the football. Stop constantly putting our struggling defense in horrible situations.

Try having your pro team do the same. This x2 gives me so many headaches.

Only difference is Philly's defense doesn't suck.
