Best unbiased news source??

C-SPAN is what all news should be. While I get my news from a variety of other outlets, this is the only one I am willing to endorse. I encourage anyone that is getting news from other outlets to try it out. IMO, you will be surprised how difficult it is to listen to other national outlets afterward, especially Fox and MSNBC. Another tip is to realize news in a 24/7 format results in mostly irrelevant information and sensationalization of stories.

Got the grant that ate up all of Fall semester. Now on to doing the actual study.

Well, its official, Wisconsin is now what Nebraska used to be. Better in football and volleyball than us.

Writing grants in an unsupportive academic environment is the most soul sucking thing I've ever done.

The difference between pre-tenured and tenured status is that colleges can choose to not renew the contract and terminate a professor without cause or reason during the probationary, pre-tenured period. The university has to demonstrate incompetence or unprofessional conduct before firing a tenured professor. So, tenure provides some job security, but it does not make you bullet-proof. You still get evaluated for promotions and raises; you just get the right to be fired with cause.

@teachercd As a young professor, tenure is like strapping a time-bomb on your chest. You have 5 years to prove to the university you have a stable, productive, and independently-funded research program with the added charges of service and teaching expectations. The dream of becoming an old professor is secondary to the hope you can keep your job following your tenure review.

The pressure of obtaining research funding has to be the most intense issue as a tenure-track assistant professor (double since you and your wife are an academic couple). I was in a funding drought for the first two years starting out (relying on my start-up funds and submitting over 20 grant applications), but the dam finally broke in year 3 where we got 4 grants (including my first NIH R01). I was stressed out all the time thinking about if I could hack it or would have to find another job, worrying about moving my wife and kids (again), and feeling guilty about how it would impact my graduate students. I also dealt with poor institutional support (still do). But, my perspective shifted once funding started to come. Those worries were resolved, and the issues in the department became less burdensome (or at least my perception of them) because I was less stressed overall.
I hope you can define success for yourself. DM me if you want to trade war stories.

Is this at your new position? If so, you would think your new chair would want to offer some protected time so you can get your research program up and running. If you have not done so already, it might be worth having an explicit conversation about your needed support.
Admittedly, that might not be relevant advice since I don’t know what the main issue is. But, a good chair would find ways to support you.

Mel Tucker is gonna pull in a lot of good prospects out of Colorado here pretty soon.

A lot of JUCO offers lately.... A great sign for the recruiting class, I'm sure.... Bad recruiting should be illegal.

No Blackshirt(s) was handed back in over the weekend...looks like “just ok” is ok with them

I am curious to see what it will be like in Lincoln for the Indiana game. At team that most fans to really care about it, they won't have many fans making the trip. The game time could impact things. Do we start to see a little slide in attendance?

Phew. Feel great for that kid, what a cool moment for him. Gotta say though, as a fan that level of celebration after this one just seems stupid and embarrassing. Just an ugly disappointing game for a team who still hasn't looked good through the majority of the season. BUT, wins are wins and that feels nice. And they're playing Let Me Clear My Throat! Enjoy it if you can.

They have sold a LOT more tickets for this Illinois game than for the other two home games. Wonder why?

I take it that you're happy with your political forum being an echo chamber of ignorant, leftist ideology. Have you considered opening the forum to others so that quality discussion can ensue?

@Redux Do you think a troll account would survive to 250 posts?

So when I am bored (always) and lonely (always) I look at homes online...soooo homes are basically free in Birmingham and Montgomery Alabama...with in-ground pools. Anyone ever live there?

@Scratchtown keep political content in the PR forum.

So, this "pouring water on cops" thing...how are those people not in prison and what kind of kid thinks that is okay to do? I don't think this belongs in the PR section because it isn't politics, it is common sense. But if it needs to be moved, feel free and then I should end up with about 2000 +1's.

@teachercd, go ahead a make a thread in the PR forum. Your intent may not be to politicize this conversation, but it will go that route quickly. @B.B. Hemingway, do you remember 2016? I do, and so does my inbox.
