IMO "hair band" and "glam metal" are not the same thing even though there was plenty of overlap between the two. I think one of the only requirements for hair band is the big hair and hard rocking. Whereas glam metal indicates more of the makeup and generally worse music. So I guess I don't really have a problem calling GnR or the Crue hair bands because they had the hair and they rocked it. I've got a lot dimmer view of glam metal and the extreme makeup (KISS excluded) they we're awesome even if they were a bit musically challenged. My first ever concert was the KISS Destroyer tour. Good times.

I've always considered GnR more of a hard rock band than glam/hair metal.  Montley Crue was totally a glam metal act.
