  1. Who here has interviewed for a "promotion" within your own company?  And what did you think of the process?

I have been up for "promotions" within my current company 4 times in the 7 years I have been there.  Three of the 4 times I have known the hiring manager well, so it wasn't very formal.

      1.  Met with the hiring manager in his office for about 30 minutes.  We discussed my background, the job, and his group.  I also met with his boss where he asked me some more formal questions.  Then I met with the 3 other guys on the team that I would work closely with, to make sure I wasn't a serial killer (boy did I fool them).

      2.  A job came open in a totally different group, but I knew the hiring manager well.  It was a "promotion" and my current role with the company had some uncertainty to it.  I had a very informal meeting with the hiring manager, and was offered the job a couple days later.

      3.  A job came open in the area I wanted to get back into.  I knew the hiring manager, but not very well.  I met with her in her office for about 30 minutes, but it was pretty informal.  I also met with her boss (who I also knew), and that seemed a bit more formal.  I didn't get the job, as they might have already someone in mind.

      4.  This is the job I currently have.  I did not know this hiring manager, as she worked for the company that we recently merged with.  The "interview" was supposed to be over the phone, but she happened to be in my building on that day, so we met in a sitting area to discuss the role and her team.  I think she did some asking around my company about me, and I talked to a guy on her team who I knew.  I ended up getting offered the job a couple weeks after meeting with her.

I've had both the 'interview' and then simply just being told that I was being promoted (if I accepted of course which I did).   The interview ended up being total bs and waste of time.  I got schmoozed the entire time only to learn I was beat out for the position by a lesser qualified candidate who I later learned had befriended said interviewer in the company yoga class that they took together.  Good times there.  In the other scenario I was simply brought in and offered the position and then was told if I accepted to then just go online and re submit a resume for the new position which of course was just a technicality and that was all.  I preferred the second scenario much much more...
