What did you think of the officiating?

Recommended Posts

I don't know what is up with the officiating across the NCAA this year. It's bizarrley awful. No real consistency to speak of.

This is what I see, too. I've watched a lot of games from a lot of different conferences and the officiating is consistently inconsistent. I don't know if it is all of the rule changes, or what the points of emphasis are, or if there are a lot of inexperienced officials. There have been a lot of games where one team will be heavily penalized where their opponent has few, yet their play is about the same. Hmmm...

By the way, what ever happened to the "catchable ball" interpretation? I have seen time after time where the ball isn't within 15 feet of the receiver and some ticky-tack interference penalty is called. Offensive pass interference and picks are never called. If they were, the spread offense would go the way of the single wing.

We got absolutely screwed yesterday with the officiating. Obviously, the game wasn't decided by officiating, but if it had I would be absolutely pissed off right now. How in gods name are you that bad at your job and still have a job? If I was that bad at my job I would be fired right now and working at McDonalds. I don't know if the officials are trying to send a message to Bo and trying to get him to calm down and quit getting in their ears, but if you keep doing this stupid crap he might rip your head off and bury it in the middle of Memorial Stadium.

One thing I think everyone is forgetting is that they get graded after every game on the calls they blew. It also my understanding that the HC of each team make comments to the conference about them also.

I don't think Bo did himself any favors with temper tantrums at the beginning of the season. Then he also is constantly riding the officials for calls during the game, and when I hear them talking about it on the radio, it sounds like he is whining.

I do think you have to stand up for your team, and object to obvious missed calls, but to do that I think we need to "clean up" our act a little bit, too...or at least our image this season. There have been too many personal fouls, and then Crybaby Daniels making a statement that we play dirty, deserved or not, didn't help. These are comments that we never heard under Osborne...or BC for that matter. I think that this image will go away once people see how Bo operates for a while, with his passion. But until then, people, including officials, are just looking for outlandish behavior coming from Bo or the players.

Like it or not, we may have to take a few on the chin before the monkey is taken off our back. But that don't mean that the officials will "get away with" bad calls, because they do answer to the conference for their actions. And if it is that obvious that they are favoring one team or another, I am sure something will be done...or I hope it will.

Talking about it though is not a bad thing, because then the conference officials and the game officials will realize that fans are noticing...and maybe they will look at themselves a little harder.

And when Bowden does the same thing on the FSU sidelines he's considered some kind of master gamesman because of his skill working the officiating crew, but Bo is a whiner..........puhhlease.

Bowden has been around a lot longer, has won, and with it comes some respect. Bo is new as a HC, so won't get the same respect. Big difference. Then throw in the "dirty play" comments from Chase, and you have the reason that we have this situation that the officials are looking for us to do something...and with Bo being so vocal, that don't help. They didn't just come gunning for Nebraska, we kind of got ourselves into this situation to some degree, and it is gong to take some time to get out, but we can.

I am also sure Bo is pointing out where the officials are wrong to the conference...so the officials will know that if they blow a call, they will be held responsible for it to some degree.

That's the very definition of unfair officiating. How experienced or what kind of a reputation a coach has has(or at least should not have) no bearing on the calls that are made. If the refs judge it to be a penalty, then it is a penalty. Think about it.

Your right...and your wrong. Your right in that if there is a penalty, it should be called, but the refs are human, and have touchy feely feelings...lol. As a result, if you hurt their feelings by yelling at them constantly, they are going to bull up and get angry inside, and do anything they can to make you wrong, and on a close call they will see it going against you. Human Nature 101.

I am not going to say not to plead your case for your team, but in the end, the only justice may come from the conference, though too late to affect the game at hand. As a great general once said - pick your battles. You have to realize when your not going to win, quit arguing, and move on. For one thing you don't help your team if your not into what is currently going on, secondly your just pissing off the ref.

I will also agree that the officiating was far less than stellar yesterday as a whole (maybe even the worst we have seen this season). We have seen a lot of that all over the NCAA this year. A minority of the refs are acting like rookies, making all of them look bad. A good official knows when a "no-call" is appropriate. They also seem to know kind of how to balance the books when they have made an error, without losing face. We haven't been seeing that lately with the officials we have had. Another thing I think may be coming into play is that the officials are being watched so closely...they are afraid not to call everything sometimes, and call penalties that should be a no-call sometimes.

Watching from the stands it was pretty bad. One of the most obvious (besides the Swift punt) was the hold on Peterson for the second stop and go. I don't know what the ref was looking at, but Peterson was stopped and then was able to get away. He had the d-back beat badly.....oh well, it was a Husker win and that is all that matters.

And BRI is absolutely correct. If any of us were doing that poor of a job, we would be fired on the spot and escorted out by security.

I think you are on to something here.

It is the samething that happens to the Stoops brothers as well. They constantly complain and whine on the sidelines and appear to get less calls then the teams they are playing. You can't tell me that the refs don't take being cussed at all the time personally and call plays that they may have let go for other teams. It is like that in all sports not just college football.

People complaining about the Personal Fouls need to move on. Suh hit the Va Tech guy late, Glenn horse collared that dude today, Slauson & Suh let their emotions get the best of them on theirs, Steinkuhler saw a Warren Sapp chance and took it. Like was mentioned ANY facemask is 15 now no matter what. Oh and Bo calling the Va Tech Ref a FU***N C**KS**KER over and over deserved a flag as well.

The Swift punt return no call was pretty bad though.

He called him that? :rollin

I really wonder if the game is becoming too fast for some of these officials? Having seen the speed of these incredible athletes from near and far, it is a wonder to me how some of these refs can even keep up. To me, I feel the officiating has been very inconsistent this year in particular. I would be curious to know about the review procedures the Big 12 has toward their referees.

Totally agree the game is way too fast for these geriatric officials, some of these guys shouldn't be driving let alone deciding the outcome of college football games.

I know they are reviewed after every game. I kind of wondered about the speed aspect too, you wouldn't see a fat boy like me keeping up.

I think they may be feeling some of the pressure of having everything they do seen by the cameras, and know that if they miss a call that should have been called, it will count against them. The camera angles that they come up with now days is nothing like 10 or 15 years ago, they have a camera to see EVERYTHING! Just ask Booger Daniels how they caught him picking his nose...and then supposedly eating it! :clap

The officiating was bad on Saturday. Grabbing the shoulder pads from behind isn't allowed but grabbing the jersey is? What's the freakin' difference? If they are trying to "protect the players", how is this any different?

I'm so tired of the NCAA making these rules so inconsistent that it's hard for players to actually play football. Grazing the facemask is actually a facemask penalty. Not only that, but a 15 yard penalty? Hitting a player less than half a second after he lets go of the ball is now a late hit?

I mean come on. I'm all for protecting the players, but it's football. Injuries happen. If you didn't want injuries to happen then football should probably be cancelled. It's getting sickening watching it lately. There's so many penalties everywhere that would have never been called in the past. Pretty soon football will turn into two hand touch and if you look at a player the wrong way it will be an automatic seven points for the opposing team.

Welcome to the age of the continued pussification of football.
