QB Race

Recommended Posts

Crouch is probably one of the best athletes that has come through the program in recent years, but his QB game wouldn't work in this offense. I think the comparisons are for not. I don't think Crouch would start at QB in this offense. His arm is like a cannon, but the accuracy just wasn't there. I'm not knocking the guy. He's a legend and always will be. Option left, option right, option right, option left, play action to Wilson Thomas (On third and long) worked at the time, but eventually cost Frank his job.

I always take heat for this, but I'll say it anyway. I think Jamal Lord's athleticism always gets overlooked because the offense he was on was so vanilla and predictable. I think T-Mart has more talent than Lord, but it is a more realistic comparison.

Imho, "this offense" would be changed by Bo in about four nanoseconds if by miracle an Eric Crouch somehow appeared (and was eligible). No way he wouldn't use him "immediately". Just like he's doing right now in changing the offense for freshman Tmart. I'm sure it would be different from Frank's offense but he would be on the field at qb.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I don't think he would take a snap in any offense other than the one he was in. I think the guy would have made millions in a role like Wes Welker. I think he's bigger, faster and stronger than him.

The funny thing about the offense from the 90's and early 2000 is that I think T.O. would have even evloved away from a purely option based approach. That being said, I believe Crouch is a 'purely option' quarter back that probably would have put up Danny Woodhead type numbers at Air Force.

To me the arguement that Bo make him a QB because he is strong and fast just doesn't add up. I would think that #22 would be under center right now if that was the case.

I will hold judgement till he wins a conference title and puts us into an NC game, oh and is in the running for a heisman. He has played ONE game, he played pretty well agianst one of the worst teams in college football. He has a long way to go, before we even mention him and Crouch in the same paragraph let alone sentence.

YES...thank you...Tmart played well...but we also played WESTERN KENTUCKY who didn't win a game last year. Lets see how he fairs in two weeks on the road at Washington. Don't get me wrong...he looked VERY good yesterday but will he have the poise? Zach Lee has been through it ALL...and I find it hard to believe that Tmart would have as much poise as Zach Lee in a pressure situation...just sayin...but time will tell! All in all...a good opener for us...I hope our defense gets its sh#t together though...WOW...I was not impressed.

A friend of mine lived on the same floor as Martinez last year and said he was one of the cockiest people he'd ever met and that no one on the floor or on the team liked him. My friend knows one of the walk on players pretty well and he said that Martinez flat out told him and other walk-ons that they didn't deserve to be on the team and that they were basically a waste of space. I would say he's a little cocky.

I'm sure that story didn't get twisted at all by jealousy or friends/family wishing their guy was getting the same kind of love as t-mart... that is if this is even coming from a reliable source, which I highly doubt. Watching post-game interviews, every guy smiled when talking about Taylor. If he were an arrogant jerk, I suspect players wouldn't love talking about him so much.

I'm not trying to bring the guy down at all. Having swagger and confidence is almost essential for being a successful quarterback and from what I saw Saturday Martinez is legit. The story about T-Mart isn't something that just came up after his big game, it was told to me a year ago when he was just basically a no name guy who was fighting to prove he deserved to even get a shot at qb. Its just a fact that as a person the guys kind of a jerk, but so are plenty of other guys his age. As for the teammates smiling and only saying good things about after the game... of course they would. He just put on a show as a red-freshmen. Plus they really only talked to Rex ( who I don't think could ever say anything not PC) and Niles who's cockier than anyone.

Just so we're clear...You know for a fact Martinez is a cocky, arrogant, and superficial jerk because your friend says so and because a friend of your friend said so.

Everybody on the team (including many on the sidelines, if you were at the game) were hugging him, smiling, laughing, etc. when he scored a touchdown. You don't get that type of praise of you're a jerk.

More accurately, it's what he calls himself.

Niles Paul says he came up with it.

Taylor gave himself that name in HS, and his teammates back then called him that.

Safety P.J. Smith doesn't know the nickname's origin, either. Not a clue. He said he doesn't think Martinez gave himself the nickname, noting Martinez is quiet, reserved and humble.

i promise you that is not true.

maybe you can tell us what happened at Rosswell also?????

i know players that are on the team and practice with them every day that have each told me that Lee was outplayed. You can look back at my posts if you like, i was an avid supporter of Lee 98% of the time last season but he was outplayed by Martinez this fall.

this is first hand info straight from other players, so take it for what its worth i guess.

And I promise you, with complete faith, it is.

If you know players on the team, I have a simple question for you though - two days after Taylor had his huge scrimmage, what happened with one of our QBs? You can PM it to me if you don't wanna post it publicly. :snacks:

If you look back to my history of posts, I've talked about the fact Zac was not well liked by the coaches for nearly a year now. One or two coaches view Zac badly for personal reasons, but the majority of the coaches who dislike Zac only have that feeling because they see him as soft.

Was the Roswell jab necessary though? Although it leads me to believe you are just trying to stir the pot, rather that bring anything informative.

There are wide receivers and running backs and defensive tackles (especially my beloved warren sapp) who have had cockiness. There have been very few cocky QBs. reason being that they are, like it or not, the face of the program. They are supposed to be the leaders and coaches don't like their program's leader to become bulletin board material for every team they play.

After watching the replay of the interview again, i think the people who said that he is just shy are probably right. He had that look like this is awful a couple times during the talk and that made me think more along the lines of he is just a shy kid whos new to the whole deal. The story concerns me a great deal though... if thats true, he really needs to work on how he treats those guys because they are just one or two injuries away from being his go-to guys and blindside protectors... Just my 2 cents.

Well I obviously don't know for a fact that he is but if someone said that he is arrogant p.o.s. with absolutely no reason to than he probably is. Keep in mind he lived on the same floor as T-Mart all year, I'm pretty sure he got a good feel of what type of guy he is. Bottom line, who cares if he is arrogant and cocky, no one said you had to be a nice guy to play football, and as long he makes plays I'm going to love and support the guy. All I'm saying is that the dude is no Turner Gill.

Let me quote you.

Its just a fact that as a person the guys kind of a jerk

Also, P.J. Smith (a teammate who has been through the blood, sweat, and tears of practices and summer workouts) disagrees with your friend entirely.

Safety P.J. Smith doesn't know the nickname's origin, either. Not a clue. He said he doesn't think Martinez gave himself the nickname, noting Martinez is quiet, reserved and humble.

This whole Zac Lee thing is eerily reminiscent of Joe Dailey situation. Coach comes in…. cupboard is bare….coach goes and gets what he wants and old QB has to go. This isn’t an entitlement program…it’s about winning football games.

Ganz did have a year when Bo got here, but that’s hardly anything to plan a program around. Obviously Caly got his franchise guy. We’re all still talking about how good Keller was :).

As many have already noted, this is hardly a done deal anyway. I have no doubt the best will play.

Come on man your just being dumb. I'm not trying to bring the kid down but you can just tell. Obviously from just the post game interviews many other people got the impression that the kid is very full of himself. You can just tell. He gave himself the T-Magic nickname. The paper even said so the past week. Also, they went into detail on things the guy had posted about himself on facebook that did not sound so humble to me, especially for someone who had never played a down.

First and foremost, name-calling is reserved for the woodshed. If you don't agree with someone's take then you disagree with them respectfully and in a mature fashion. Otherwise, you will receive a ban. Keep that in mind before you spout off again.

Sure, he's a cocky guy, but I clearly pointed out to you that you think he is a jerk for a FACT when you personally know nothing about him. And a teammate, someone who is closer to him than you or your "friend who lived on the same floor as him" will ever be, said he is a quiet, reserved, and humble guy. What you are doing is taking word of mouth as fact when you really know nothing about a situation.

I'm not sitting here debating with you whether or not he is a jerk, but more or less that you appear to think he is FOR A FACT. That fact that you have fewer than 10 posts doesn't bode well for my confidence in believing you right now, especially when flamers usually sustain similar post counts and get banned quickly.
