The Niles Paul Thread

Recommended Posts

i am an active reader on these forums cause i believe a lot of you users know a lot about what you are talking about and i respect that.. but its sad to see this garbage you write about about these 18-24 year olds on the forum.. i am very good friends with many of the players on the team and specifically ones that your are very heated with. the tradition we have is unbelievable, but i have a problem with so-called "husker fans". we go through slumps, bumps or whatever.. but some of you are straight up hypocrites... PLease be supporters of these guys even with wins or losses .. husker fans are the best supporters and HATERS at the same time! give these guys a break.. no one wants to lose but there will always be a loser in a game.. they go to school, are still maturing as adults, and juggle a some what normal social life.. and i know for a fact all these guys feel the state of NEbraska on their shoulders.. they are embarassed to walk into class, walk down O street to get food because of the looks and anger given towards them from "fans".. LET THEM BE! cant take back the loss, look forward.. They are students of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln .. STUDENTS! take this for what it is.. if you dont care cool... but c'mon .. so much negativity..

Lastly this is how we deal with it. Don't make believe I or anyone else on here is not a fan. People get upset with such stupid losses, and with players running their mouth then not backing it up. But you know what, unlike KSU, or CU or heck even Texas, we will be out in force at the OSU game, then we will again cheer on the Huskers at home with 85k+, so get off your high horse, in the end everyone on here supports this team, we may argue but in the end that is all that really matters....

yea you guys are right he should have caught that pass rex dropped and the one kinnie dropped also. Maybe he should of played defense and kept contain of those slow developing garret gilbert running plays. It wasnt a team loss it was all niles fault. The game was 72 hours ago and we lost. Im not saying he doesnt need to keep his mouth shout and catch the ball but the way this is going is absurd. I saw someone say kinnie was excused because he is more consistant than niles wtf does that mean HE DROPPED A TOUCHDOWN! Maybe everyone should stop drinking the kool aid and examine our schedule. We havent beat a solid team yet and hadnt faced adversity yet and it showed.

When BK drops as many passes as Niles, fumbles as many punts and/or shoots his mouth off in the press, you can bet your bottom dollar he's going to take the same kind of heat Niles is taking right now.

Niles is a Senior. He's playing and acting like a Freshman. Expecting him to get a pass on that is ridiculous. Get real.

:yeah :yeah :yeah :yeah :yeah :yeah

Nobody excused Rex or Brandon because those plays were inexcusable. But have either of them been quoted in the OWH demanding the ball? Niles has brought it on himself.

Even more, you know with Kinnie and Burkhead that you are getting constant 110% effort. Those guys don't pout in-game if they aren't getting touches, and they do not take plays off.

With Niles, it has always been the same. All the talent in the world, but absolutely no true love for the grittiness of football.

But if he keeps playing like he is, and displaying the attitude he has - he will certainly have alot more time than he thought to do some ab crunches, push-ups and curls to work on his physique so he can impress some more ladies.

I'm glad the human fumble/drop machine won't be here when we're in the Big10 next year.

I'll take one Peterson, Swift or Davison over 10,000 Paul's any day. I gave up on this guy a long time ago. Obviously the coaches haven't which is probably a good thing I suppose.

Until it costs us a game.......oh wait

Christopherson just posted this on Life in the Red:

Husker senior wide receiver Niles Paul has taken his share of criticism for a couple dropped passes in the Texas game.

Paul said he tries to block out the criticism, but that was impossible after Saturday's game when a couple fans yelled "You suck" and "Texas can have you" as he and his family were walking to the car after the game.

"It hurts. It hurts," Paul said "When I was walking back to the car and people were yelling stuff at me, it's disrespectful. And as an athlete I have to keep my cool and just stay focused because I don't want to do anything to put my situation in jeopardy."

Paul said his brothers reacted angrily at first, but he calmed them and they just kept walking to the car.

The receiver also received a lot of negative feedback on his Facebook page after the game, so much that he just deactivated the account.

"I deleted it because I can't deal with that," Paul said. "If people are going to kind of use me as the scapegoat and say mean things to me on Facebook for making a mistake that receivers make or being human in the game, just kind of block it out."

Paul said Saturday's game and the criticism that came with it is especially difficult "because I know very well that I can make those plays. Some of those catches were a little hard, but great receivers make those catches. It's just me refocusing and doing little things to get my concentration back on catching the ball, tucking it and making those big plays."

Husker wide receivers coach Ted Gilmore told me Monday that he can't be any harder on Niles than Niles is on himself about a game.

I know Paul is a bit of a lightning rod because of some gaffes last year (Texas Tech backward pass, Iowa State fumble) and how up front he is about saying he wants the ball.

It's also important to note that Paul, whether it's a good game or a bad game, has almost always showed up to talk about what happened. He was there to answer questions after the Texas Tech game last year and he was the first guy at the podium after the Texas loss on Saturday.

Say what you will, but I give Paul a ton of credit for being a man about it on rough days. It's a lot tougher to stand in front of the cameras after a tough game than yell insults from a distance.

It's hard not to feel sorry for the guy. Like I said over at the LJS:

we all WANT him to succeed. He's a home-grown Husker. He's an Omaha guy, as Nebraska as you can get. Everyone is rooting for the guy. It just seems that he makes some major errors on a major stage, which end up costing us a win. It's happened too often to be coincidence.

I'm not going to stop cheering for Niles, but man, I wish he would stop giving me reasons to face-palming, too.

I sincerely hope he puts together a string of awesome games to finish his career so we can stop all this negativity. Nobody wants him to fail.

Go get 'em, Niles.

It's surprising that we haven't had a consistent receiver since these two graduated. Statistically, shouldn't someone else have emerged by now?

Just saw this on the OWH and I can't say how vehemently I disagree with this:

I have to realize I'm not playing for the fans,” he said. “I'm playing for my coaches and the team and I was more upset I let down my team more than anything.”

Pelini, like all coaches, has taken abuse from fans when things don't go as they hoped.

Does he ever want to punch hecklers?

“Yeah, honestly, you do want to,” Pelini said.

But Pelini said he resists the urge and lets criticism bounce off him. He told Paul to do the same.

“Niles is a prideful guy,” Pelini said. “He didn't have the type of game he wanted to have. It doesn't help the situation when that happens. It makes him even madder. He'll respond very well to the whole thing.”

Niles, of course you're playing for the fans. The fans are what makes Nebraska. Without the fans UNL is UNK, or UNO. You're from Nebraska, you should know this.

I disagree with this sentiment from Paul as much as I disagree with the idiots who heckled him after the game, or who crapped on his Facebook page. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Yes, and like UNK and UNO players, Niles would still play football whether you showed up or not. The enjoyment of playing football came well before that fact of your approval or disapproval as a fan.

you would be surprised how many husker players do look at the forum.. cuz they care what the fans think.. for what you know i may be a husker player

Okay. Enough all ready.

You don't know a Husker player (hiding behind the bushes, staring as they come out of the weight room doesn't count), and you're not a player.

Even if you did, you're basically asking for the internet to be purged of any and all negativity after the team laid an ostrich egg on Saturday because some of the players may get on their WiFi and see it. Treating them like they're 10 year olds looking for their Dad's porn stash doesn't solve anything, and if their psyche is that fragile, I'd be worried about them doing anything in their daily lives.

Any one of us could find a forum full of people that say negative things that might offend us. Whatever are we to do? I'll spare you the suspense: we don't click on the link.

I'm fairly new on this board, and I can say that this is one of the more benign forums you'll find. Most of the comments pretty much consist of people wishing the team would play better. Telling Niles Paul to 'catch the damn ball' is no different than what any of his coaches were saying on the sidelines or in practice. When the local newspaper simply reports that the receivers dropped 8 passes on Saturday, I guess that's negative. Maybe they should stay more positive and talk about the balls the DID catch. And maybe we should talk about how these kids try their best. And maybe we should give them watermelon and CapriSuns after the game. And maybe an end of the year pizza party to celebrate! But guess what? This isn't 10 year old Pee Wee football. College football is a business. What drives that business is people being fanatical about football. I'm not going to argue that this is a healthy way to follow sports, but it's not casual fans that spend $500 for a 50 yd line seat. It's not a casual fan that decorates his house in Scarlet and Cream. It's not the casual fan that shells out $30 to watch his team play a glorified scrimmage against Western Kentucky. And it's not a casual fan that joins a message board for the right to answer in essay form why his team can't run the ball against a good defense.

There you have it. For the same reason these players get recognized on the street, get drinks bought for them at the pub, and get laid frequently by coeds is the very same reason they are subject to accessible ridicule and criticism at times.

That's the good with the bad. And when the team is winning 10 games a year (which it should be expected to more often than not), the good times are much more frequent than the bad.

He wouldn't play in the facility he plays in. He wouldn't have the travel he has, the training table he enjoys, the scholarship, the trainers, the easier path to the next level, the national stage, the prestige, all of it. Get over myself? Get a clue yourself, buddy. The fans of Nebraska are what made Nebraska. You're dreaming if you think it's the same thing. Wake up.
