Make no mistake, we got a good push up front, but even with guys in his face he was able to complete passes into tight windows.

Maybe a dozen times out of, what, 78 plays? The vast majority of the time it was the same ol' patty-cake we've grown accustom to.

They were 1-8 on 3rd downs. That would lead me to believe that the majority of their 600+ yrds was done on 1st or 2nd down. Think about that. 1-8 on third down. They ran 78 plays and were only in 3rd downs on 8 plays. This is Wyoming, not some top 10 or up and coming program. Our scheme sux unless you have the likes of SUH, Prince and others, BUT this was against the pass happy Big 12, not the dual threat QB's or "traditional O's" we see in the B1G. Call me stupid, but year 6 and Bo owns 4-10 of our most yards allowed and I would say we have a problem.

And their DC is one of the best in the biz and getting paid over 1 million to do it. Clemson pay Venables over 1million. I am seeing a theme here............

I think I said last night, when you build up the hype all off season then perform like that to open the year you can expect the same questions that have been asked for the last five years.

 

We got the win, but wow, who expected that. Nobody I talked to here did.

 

I did expect them to move the football. But it was a combination of:

 

1) Brett Smith making some very good throws that I didn't think he was capable of. Make no mistake, we got a good push up front, but even with guys in his face he was able to complete passes into tight windows.

 

2) Our inexperience. Anyone who has ever played a sport in college gets this. Your first game as a freshman is very stressful and you will be nervous. Add to that 92,000 people expecting a ton of freshman to shut an opponent out and you have a recipe for disaster.

 

Look I am not saying we are ready by any means to play for a Natty or even conference play. There is a lot of room for growth. But I do see us being a lot better in the coming weeks. I would have rather had a game where our freshman get humbled and they realize what it takes to win at this level, than beating a team 50-0. Our young guys are going to learn a ton from this film during the week. Had we smashed them 47-0 we would have learned nothing.

Why do we seem to forget that Wyoming also had new starters and had to play on the road in front of 92,000 people? It was an even playing field, both teams had veteran quarterbacks and a lot of new starters. I don't want to use that as excuse as to why we beat a mid level MWC team at home by 3 points while surrendering 600 yards and over 30 first downs. It's becoming quite clear that the issues over the last couple of years are coaching issues, it's hard to debate that one now.

 

So what needs to be changed about the coaching? Need some examples. Besides some very youthful and inexperienced, yet fixable mistakes, I didn't see much defensively that went terribly wrong. Had TM not thrown that pick I'm very confident saying WYO doesn't get past 21 points. Which is right where I expected them to be. My big concern is offensive play calling and linebacker to this point. In no way shape or form do you run a swing pass to Imani Cross on 3 and 7 or not hand him the ball on 4 and 1.

 

The linebackers made easily the most mistakes out of any position group.

Pretty sure we pay our defensive play caller over $3 million per year.

But I didn't see a ton of two-gap in the game IMO. I saw plenty of the freshman, like Collins and Curry hitting gaps, going for Smith.

Hell, I am not a defensive coach...but it didn't look like two-gap D for much of the game. I also saw the ends play a lot of 1-gap from what I could see...they had Gregory and Moss hitting the edge and going.

Yeah, that's kind of a given. In a 3-4 it's pretty standard to have the front 3 cover 2 gaps. They (Bama) also don't play man-on-man in running situations and they send pressure in passing situation.

 

What about 4-3 defenses that play 2-gap?

Yes, they did run gap responsibility that way for awhile, but that was early when WYO was running it right down our throat. It was also how we lost contain a couple times on Smith.

I've only rewatched the first half but we actually had pretty good pressure just rushing 4 guys. It was just a combination of things on different plays that let us down; either we played off coverage and he got the ball out quick, Smith moved around in the pocket well enough to buy time and get the pass off, or our rush was just uncoordinated and guys were hitting the same gap and running into each other. The newbies on the line pushed they're guys back almost all night, it's the salty old "veterans" that seemed to be struggling.
