Un(?)Warranted Optimism Thread

We aren't making the playoffs with 2 losses. Especially if one of them is a "head scratcher"

Our schedule would beg to differ. Especially if Wisconsin beats LSU.

No, even if we beat Wisconsin and they beat LSU...if we lose to Purdue or someone like that who finishes 4-8 (ish) and a loss to MSU, It doesn't matter if we are Big 10 Champs...

IMO, a 2 loss SEC and PAC 12 champ get in. That leaves two spots. With the Big12 champ and ACC champ left out there...Considering FSU's weak schedule they get in, and probably as the top seed. Leaving the Big10 and Big 12 champ. If both have 2 losses, then we may have a shot but the Big12 champ would HAVE to have 2+ losses for us to have a chance in this scenario. Until the perception of the Big10 changes, we, as a conference, are going to be the ones left out.

What the heck, I know I'm not the only koolaid drinking fool in these parts, so I'm going to get it started.

This year is going to be epic. In short, here's my take on how this year will roll-out.

We will lose one head-scratcher game, earlier in the season. No idea which one...that's why it will be a head-scratcher. We will also lose one game that most would consider a possible loss going in, or at least a toss up. We have some tough road games this year.

Beyond that, those two will be our only two losses. Toward the end of the season, we will begin to clearly be a dominant team. We will win the Big10 CG, convincingly. We will be in the playoff at the end of the year.

Our defense will come out of the gate good, racing on their way to greatness. There will be multiple blackshirt players that truly frighten opposing teams, with running back, receivers and qbs clearly either looking to go down early, or missing catches out of their fear. Buy stock in wood, because the wood will be brought on defense this year.

The offense will be stable to start the season. An early season solid outing against Miami will be the harbinger of the rest of the year. With that commanding win under their belts, the O will just continue to improve. TA will prove to be a winning combination of Turner Gill and Tommy Frazier. Beck will actually call games to our strengths and stop being so inconsistent. Ameer will cement his position as a legit Heisman Candidate, but may miss out due to the talented gang behind him that will also excel. I was once told that if Jesus appeared on stage at a Who concert, he'd be the third person you'd watch. I feel that way about our backfield and receiving corps. Records will be broken. Downfield blocking will once again become legendary.

Bo and his staff will "get it" this year and will be the ones out-coaching the others in critical games. They have the studs to make it happen this year.

Unfortunately, we will not win the playoffs, setting us up for "Unfinished Business 2", leading to two national championships in the next 3 years.

!!!!!Go Big Red!!!!!

Time for a revisit to the koolaid powered vision.

The early season head scratcher might have been McNeese State...even though we actually won.

MSU is the loss we all sort of expected going in to the season.

Beyond that, I really missed most of the marks, but there is a lot of season still left. Our O-line has not become dominant. We do have some studs on D. Our receivers have not broken records, only in the injury department maybe.

But the over all picture still holds the door open for this being an epic prediction. After last week's mayhem, and I expect more mayhem to ensue at the top of the ranking through the end of the year..we could very well win the Big10 CC game and find a way into the playoffs. Very, very big set of "ifs"...but I remember the first National Championship. Things had to go our way right up the the game earlier in the day on that New Years.

Hey....it could happen.

i quit reading after you suggested a 2 loss team could make the playoff...

Did you see the part of the title of this thread...the "Unwarranted" part? In your normal, "real" world, a two loss team would not make the playoff...but this ain't that real world... chuckleshuffle

Kchusker----still feeling confident that no two loss teams will be in the playoff? Last week end was a real kick in the groin to the notion of undefeated teams being in the playoffs for sure. I see more of the same over the next few weeks.

Certainly shook things up a couple weeks earlier than I thought. Last year by week 10 we had 6 undefeated teams left (with a couple of other long shots). There were about a dozen in week 8 though. The year before that there were basically 5 at the top in week 8. This year in week 8 we've got 5. Most years it's 5-8ish with other teams like Marshal this year hanging at the bottom with no real shot at the playoff. So I'd say we're about par for the course right now.

This stuff plays itself out every year between weeks 8 and 11. It'll get whittled down to 1, maybe 2 undefeated teams and a half dozen or so deserving 1 loss teams. Happens every year. You've got to go back a long ways (I quit after 2009) before you can find any 2 loss team in the AP top 4 after the regular season. There could certainly be a 2-loss team like Stanford that has an argument...but it won't be a team from the B1G arguing with 2 losses that's for sure.

I don't think a two-loss team will be in but it's a definite possibility. Will not surprise me at all if the Pac-12 champion has two losses. And with all the good SEC teams in the West, it wouldn't be a shock if the SEC champ has two losses either.
