Amac3309
Wonder if this will cause any trouble for us?Among other things talks about Steve octavian and Marlon lucky taking money from a shady financial advisor who is now in prisonhttp://m.wsj.com/articles/colleges-push-to-keep-financial-advisers-away-from-athletes-1415331002 Edited November 7, 2014 by knapplc Edited thread title for clarity. Hingle McCringleberry
Was just reading the article. Sounds like NU has interviewed all involved and self reported to the NCAA. I think the "true cost" scollys are something we will need to look at. EDIT: Sounds like the kids are met with and sign a document about what they can and cannot receive as gifts. I dont know if a flight on a private jet is in or out, but a new suit and $800, would seem to be over the line Quote Link to comment
NUance
Is anyone alleging that NU had knowledge of this while it was going on? If not, I don't see how the team would get in trouble. Nebraska bends over backward to keep crooks like this away from players. Quote Link to comment
zoogs
Article seems clear about it being not allowed. I don't think this is the first time we heard about this, specifically with Steve Octavien. The article is more review than revelation. These are pro prospects that, once in school, are being targeted and preyed upon by these "financial advisers" looking to hop on their backs and get some of the cut of their future success. They are very much working against the school's interests. So it's not a case of bag men, which is what it was made to sound like initially. Although I wouldn't be stunned if that happened at Nebraska, too. Just disappointed. Quote Link to comment
StPaulHusker
I can see this not ending well for NU. Quote Link to comment

Nebraska bends over backward to keep crooks like this away from players. Even if no one is alleging knowledge, the NCAA can blow the trumpet of "lack of institutional control" and f#*k everything up. Hingle McCringleberry
Article seems clear about it being not allowed. You're right, not enough coffee yet. As for the rest NU tries to run a clean program but no matter what you will have people trying to gain favor with players, and some of them might be in a bad situation or just corrupt themselves. scarletNcream
That was a WSJ article? The thing read like it was written by a 12 year old. Quote Link to comment
knapplc
I'm glad this kind of investigative journalism is still being done, even if it's outing players from our program. This kind of stuff happens, and the more we find and punish the bag men, the better. Quote Link to comment
Hooked on Huskers
At Nebraska, several former football players remember Ms. Wong as a familiar sight. They say she hosted cookouts at her Omaha home, sometimes preparing short ribs. She also paid for clothes and flights on a private jet, took players to nightclubs and bought tire rims for one player’s car Damn it. Didn't see this coming.... not good. NCAA investigators are now busy. Even in the past, the NCAA will still do some digging. Quote Link to comment
HTO
I can see this not ending well for NU. This isn't recent news for NU and the NCAA plus, I believe the statue of limitations is 4 years. Quote Link to comment
jaws
If you dig hard enough at any school, you will find crap like this. Quote Link to comment
knapplc
If you dig hard enough at any school, you will find crap like this. Yep. You'd like to think your school is free of such things, but you've got 100+ guys on a team at any given time. It would defy statistical reality to expect every one of them to never get in trouble. We have a litany of things crop up every year, from stealing bikes to ex-players involved in murder to stuff like this. It's an unfortunate reality of having a bunch of individuals represent the school. Quote Link to comment
Count 'Bility
Im doing a google and seeing 4 years as a stutuate on NCAA rules, etc. Can anyone confirm? If this is true, this is nothing more than a laugher at this point isnt it? Quote Link to comment
