ColoradoHusk
Rule 1 Section 4 Article 2 Part D States: "Numbers shall not be changed during the game to deceive opponents" According to the rule book, cannot switch jerseys during the game. Live ball penalty. 15 yards from previous spot. Player is DQ'd. http://rules.bafra.org/rules/rulebook/2013/1.html Reason enough to switch their numbers. Somebody will switch numbers. They won't go into a game with both Darlington and Stevenson at #2. Quote Link to comment

ColoradoHusk
Years ago, NU stopped retiring #'s, and started to retire jerseys instead, for players who won major college awards. I think the only numbers that are officially retired are #60 for Tom Novak and #64 for Bob Brown (I could be wrong on Brown though). You are correct on this. #60 and #64 are the only two not in use anymore. It took me awhile to figure out but that's why those two numbers are in red on the face of North Stadium while all the other "retired jerseys" are in black. I was watching a few minutes of the 1988 Kickoff Classic when NU played Texas A&M. Terry Rodgers played in that game as a kick returner and I-back. I remember how it was such a big deal when they "un-retired" Johnny Rodgers' #20 to let Terry wear it. These were the days when they actually retired the numbers for major award winners. Same rule now reads as: "When a player enters the game after changing his jersey number, he must report to the referee, who then informs the opposing head coach and announces the change. Such a player who enters the game without reporting commits a foul for unsportsmanlike conduct" So there you go, as long as the player notifies referee, the referee announces it. A jersey change during game can occur during the game. http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/Final%202013%20and%202014%20Football%20Rule%20Changes.pdf 1 Quote Link to comment
ScottyIce
Darlington is pretty adamant on twitter that he is staying #2 Quote Link to comment

Was it UCLA a couple years ago that we had to have an announcement every time their holder or someone came into the game because he was a different number? Quote Link to comment
Mavric
Might be interesting to see how they handle the #2. Seems like both players are pretty set on it. I would think Darlington would get the nod on seniority but it might depend on how close either is to playing time. If Stevenson has to switch, #22 is taken (Ozigbo). There are a few numbers in the 20s available ..... including #20. Quote Link to comment
Red Five
A couple years ago Notre Dame got away with kicking a game winning field goal with 2 of the same number on the kick team when the refs didn't notice. Quote Link to comment
LSLHusker
Hmm.. . Tyrin Ferguson 43 Had another 43 a few years back with the initials TF. Coincidence? Quote Link to comment

Savage Husker
I didn't know Darlington was that adamant about #2, it must be a personal thing. Stevenson is just going to have to wait his turn to be able to take his #2. I just hope teammates can put this past them and work out, as they'll be running the twos together. A #2 shouldn't get in the way of friendship or at least winning. It would be a shame if a 2 got in the way of us getting over the hump. Quote Link to comment
