MichiganDad3
It was stated that Bo took over punt return coaching in the offseason, and the results this year were spectacular. Was DPE great because of his natural ability or because of Bo's return scheme? Do you expect DPE to do as well next year? I haven't watched the returns close enough to know what the difference was between last year and this year. Does anyone have any insight? Quote Link to comment
Warrior10
DPE wasn't punted to his whole senior year because everyone knew what he could do. Yes the blocking/scheme seemed better. But remember we brought in Bruce Read where last 10ish years at OSU he has just done special teams, I'm sure his schemes are well thought out. Quote Link to comment
Warrior10
I think the changes between last year and this year would break down to: 90% DPE 10% Scheme Did DPE return the first punts of the year? For some reason I'm thinking we had Bell/Westy back there and it looked terrible like years past. Quote Link to comment
Hayseed
Of course it helps to have good blockers but I doubt it has as much to do with it as DeMorney's ability to catch the ball clean and juke the tackler out of his shoes, then take off like a rocket. He's a special player. Oh, and Bo was just awful at everything........probably couldn't coach recess. Quote Link to comment
Husker no ka oi
What schemes ?? Put a helmet on a other helmet. It's all about blocking, hold that block till he's past you. That's your job on punt and kick returns. 1 Quote Link to comment
Kernal
Just the fact the the Huskers didn't turtle-up this year on special teams was about half the improvement, but I'm not sure that's exactly due to some kind of outstanding scheme. I think they were just standard special teams schemes. DPE is freaky good at returning punts, so he was the other part of the improvement. It'll be interesting to see if Read can do something with DPE and special teams beyond what we saw this year. I'd hope so since he'll be the dedicated coordinator. Quote Link to comment

True2tRA
We didn't do anything special. DPE is special. Let's not act like what we did on special teams was some miracle. We only started doing what every other team in history has done from the beginning of time. It's called blocking. Quote Link to comment
gobiggergoredder
DPE was so good he overcame the scheme. Quote Link to comment

Bell was back there for a game or two, and I'm pretty sure Jamal Turner had a go at it at least once. DPE got some looks after the first game or two, and took over from there. Wasn't he tied for the national lead in punt return TDs? Just think what would have happened if he had been able to return punts against all our weak non-con foes. Quote Link to comment
Count 'Bility
Pierson-El wasnt on the punt returns until the Fresno st game, when, conveniently coincidentally he took one back for six. Quote Link to comment

Is this not just another indictment of this pathetic bunch of assbags headed out the door? Me, you, my mom, my grandma, Grandoa Jim, Grandoa Joe, Willy Wonka and the Oompa freaking Loompas could see that Pierson-El should be returning kicks. But it took awhile for our staff to figure out. Wanna go further? No? Well I'll go there anyway. Why couldn't we develop him as a viable receiving option at some point in the season? This guy shouldve been involved in every pass play from day one. But we want to keep coach Fisher.....? Quote Link to comment
