  1. I'm gonna find this quote in 2023 and see how we feel about it then.
  2. Husker nation will be extremely disappointed if we end up hiring a coach who has ever lost a game. We're traditionally elite for gosh sakes.
  3. Scott Frost threw a touchdown pass to David Shaw 20 years ago, so now they are destined to make a lateral job transfers to a lower achieving program together.
  4. There's like 3 or 4 threads about this guy, I think. He must be good!
  5. Here is a piece written by a friend of mine who I used to work with conducting workplace investigations, comparing the Incognito/Martin situation to bullying in other workplaces: http://austinworkpla...d-nfl-bullying/
  6. I heard that guy on the radio this morning too and thought he sounded like a clown. I'm glad the interview seemed to get cut short. It seemed like this guy was trying to excuse the situation just because Martin and Incognito are both "a different kind of guy" without putting any real thought or analysis into it, and then he calls refers to a thuggish, lowbrow culture as a "Nebraska locker room." GTFO.
  7. I don't know how anyone can say that Richie didn't go overboard. Perhaps this sort of behavior is common or acceptable in NFL locker rooms, but it shouldn't be. You're not going to stop a$sholes from being as$holes or people from hazing each other to some extent, but even going by the voicemail, assuming it wasn't a joke and happened more than once (and Richie has an extended history of asshattery), this stuff is totally unacceptable. If it is somewhat common or accepted, that needs to change. As far as Martin toughening up, it sure looks like the guy has mental health issues. Most people are able to handle some extent of bullying, and we all deal with jerks on a day to day basis everywhere we go, dealing with that is part of life. Richie's bullying (and we certainly don't know the full story) should not be excused, but Martin was not able to handle it the way some others might have. But that is not a matter of being tough, it is a matter of making sure a person is mentally and emotionally healthy. Trying to force a mentally unbalanced person to "toughen up" is sort of like asking a paraplegic to run a little faster. Every time there is a mass shooting, we as a society briefly have a dialogue about addressing mental health in this country, but it extends to other areas as well, such as NFL locker rooms, the poor and addicted who are in all of our communities. Martin needed more help. Either someone should have seen the signs and found help for him, or he should have done more to make sure his own issues were known and addressed. A therapist should have been provided to help Martin cope. Instead, if the rumors coming out today are true, the Dolphins assigned a raging douchebag in Richie Incognito to address Martin's issues, which is wholly inappropriate and dangerous.
  8. Meh. I love Pink Floyd, one of the best bands ever. But I don't picture this song resonating with the team or the fans in the stadium (especially the student section) in a "pump up" sort of fashion. I don't know what would do the trick, as I don't really know what the kids listen to these days, and most of what I've heard is crap, but something that is catchy and upbeat that can get the students jumping around would probably work better. The team could come out of the tunnel with black cloaks and swords if they wanted to, but it wouldn't be intimidating, it would just be pretentious. Some gimmicks just try too hard. I don't know if there's an equivalent to Enter Sandman of Jump Around that would not be cliche, but we do know that a better product on the field always gets the stadium rocking, and better sound and production quality out of the existing gimmicks would help as well.
  9. As parents, you will all undoubtedly agree that one of our most important jobs is to educate our children as Husker fans. As babies, my wife and I taught our children basic sign language, such as "hungry," "more," "please," "thank you," "touchdown," and "throw the bones." They know how important it is to wear red on Saturdays, and when we visit my wife's relatives in Missouri, they know that they are supposed to act superior to them. So I was very pleased this morning when my 4 year old son asked me who the Huskers were playing against this weekend. Yes! He's interested in the game! So I tell him that the Huskers are playing at Michigan, and it's a pretty big game. Then he asks what Michigan's team is called. My blood suddenly runs cold. Although he is showing a gradual interest in Husker football, his number one passion, as with most 4 year olds, is superheroes. So I gulp, and tell him that Michigan is called the Wolverines. His face lights up with excitement and asks if they wear yellow and blue like Wolverine the superhero. Crap. At the end of the discussion, in which I tried to persuade him that these Wolverines have nothing to do with the superhero, and that we are Huskers, he said he wanted them to tie. He's too young to understand college football's overtime rules, so I let that one slide. At the end he said he hopes they both win, but even if they lose, he said, "It's okay, I will want them to win next week." At least he embodies the motto of: "Not the victory but the action; Not the goal but the game; In the deed the glory." But seriously, I need to burn all of his superhero toys now and replace them with Husker memorabilia, right?
  10. If my mathematizing is correct, even if you remove the 60-3 record between '93 and '97, Nebraska is still sitting at a 70% win percentage for all other games during this time period, which still puts us close to this group. Not too shabby overall.
  11. A week ago, Bo's ouster was a foregone conclusion. Is a tipped Hail Mary the only difference between calling for his head and being off their rocker for thinking so? There's still a lot of football left to be played.
  12. Isn't this sort of honor typically reserved for someone a little more inspiring or who transcends the game of football? Nebraska has a statue honoring Brook Berringer, who was an exemplary teammate and humanitarian, known for his citizenship and charitable service, whose life was tragically cut short. Michigan honors a guy who didn't even complete his college eligibility and makes a living as a blowhard.
  13. Jim Rose would lose his $h!t on even the smallest bit of excitement, and as a result, his play by play was unintelligible. I like the fact that you can understand what is actually going on when Sharpe calls the game.
  14. Wait a minute, if kids these days have never seen Matt Davison's catch, is it possible that the only thing they know about Tommie Frazier is that he's an angry overweight dude? On the other hand, maybe they don't know about Lawrence Phillips either. Whew!
  15. I was there in 1997, although the band was sitting in the opposite endzone, so none of us could see what happened. We saw a mass of students rushing the field after the play and then quietly walking back off as the announcer said "touchdown Nebraska" and we all went nuts. I didn't see the actual play until the next day on replays. This weekend, I listened to most of the game on the radio, not having BTN. In the 4th quarter, I went on a walk with my wife and kids to take advantage of one of the last nice days of the year, since I wasn't getting too much out of the radio broadcast anyway. We walked back in just to listen to the final play, and it took me several minutes to realize the actual situation.
  16. On one hand, it makes sense that he might not be too familiar with a play that occurred 16 years ago. But on the other hand, classic plays are classic plays and should be known. I was born in 1979, but I was always pretty darn familiar with highlights of Turner Gill and Mike Rozier. Even outside of Nebraska, the Cal-Stanford "Play" and Doug Flutie's big throw happened at about the same age that I was in comparison to the age Westerkamp was when Davison made his catch. Some plays are just unforgettable and impactful memories in the history of the game. But, I guess I can learn to forgive Westerkamp. He's probably earned a little bit of goodwill, eh?
  17. http://nbcpolitics.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/11/03/21299980-obama-presses-congress-to-pass-anti-discrimination-law-in-blog-post?lite It's long past due for this to be proposed.
  18. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/jonathan-martin-richie-incognito-racially-charged-texts-voicemails-miami-dolphins-nflpa-investigation Is it any surprise that Richie Incognito would be involved in this incident? What causes one person to be such a douchebag?
  19. I opened this thread expecting to be rick-rolled. Misleading title.
  20. I agree with the above about what we might learn from this game. But I tend to think the biggest games, or at least most impactful, of Bo's career might have been TAMU 2010 and OSU 2011. TAMU was a $h!tstorm that pretty much galvanized the national perception of Bo and led to an attitude adjustment that limited the team's intensity. The OSU game was a miraculous festival of wonder that bought Bo two more years, but he responded after the game with pure anger toward the fans and media.
  21. I like Frost and don't know any insider details, but there is no doubt that he would be a risky venture based on his experience so far. Texas Tech could afford to take that same sort of risk with Kliff Kingsbury because Texas Tech is frankly not a high profile program. They got lucky with an up and comer in Mike Leach, and got lucky again when Tuberville temporarily found a place there on the rebound. But Texas Tech is never going to be a program that will expect consistent greatness or to be among college football's elite. Kingsbury was a big gamble who came with goodwill due to his ties to the program, but he very well could have flopped (and hell, it's still way too early to tell). Nebraska IS one of those elite programs (historically speaking), so we would HOPE that we can pull in someone with a more established resume, after calculating all the risks. Scott Frost would feel good for all of us for the sake of nostalgia and homerism, and I think he would at least deserve an interview, but even though any new coach is going to be a gamble, Frost is still too much of an unknown for a major program like us to take that gamble right now.
  22. This board needs a subforum for threads about Kenny Bell's tweet.
