Is NU making the same mistake as Arkansas?

Huskers hope their Big Ten future won't mirror SEC's Arkansas (but it might)

Kirk Bohls, Commentary, Austin Statesman

The similarities are striking.

Both schools left what they viewed as a dying or at least struggling conference for pastures that were greener in not only prestige and tradition, but in dead presidents as well.

Both took their leave, in part, out of resentment over their status in their existing leagues, suffering slights either real or imagined and feeling too often like an outsider on some issues, like officiating, league headquarters or just decision-making clout — because of those dastardly Texas schools and specifically the University of the Joneses.

One has scheduled a regular, marquee game in the state of Texas, all the better to enhance its appeal to all those blue-chippers in the Lone Star state. Could the other be far behind?

The paths that one took in 1992 and the other this past summer closely resemble one another's and could leave some wondering this:

For good, bad or indifferent, could Nebraska be the new Arkansas? Or will it be the old Nebraska?

. . .

The SEC grabbed Arkansas to lure Texas along. Who knows? Maybe Jim Delany invited Nebraska to break up the Big 12 and entice Texas to come as well.

. . .

Alabama-Michigan's coming to Cowboys Stadium in 2012. Doesn't everybody want to come to Texas?

Pelini has 25 Texans on his current roster and will be pressed to keep that number high because he must convince Texans to play in the harsh climes of the Big Ten and far, far away from home. Even Mack Brown said "it will be interesting because their games won't be on regional TV here and the distance (for recruits' families) to travel will be farther."

Arkansas learned it the hard way. The Piggies weren't getting as much bounce in Texas, so they booked an annual date with the Aggies in Arlington to replenish their base here and, while they're not hoping to rejoin the Texas throng, they're still looking this way to restore old glory or find new treasures.

Nebraska will need to do the same — that is, if it wants to be the old Nebraska.

Makes sense, but I will say that Nebraska as a program is light years ahead of Arkansas right now. Arkansas struggled due to coaching changes, schematic changes, recruiting problems, etc. I dont see Nebraska taking a sort of dive like Arkansas did when they moved, with the a defensive minded coach on board and an offensive that allows playmakers to come in an just go makes for a winning forumla, in my opinion.

People will always think this, won't they. Never mind that Nebraska made an academically, athletically and financially sound decision with the Big Ten. Heaven forbid anyone gives us credit for that.

The guy is from Austin, what do you expect. He's looking in the future too and knows the "Big 12" will not survive and is trying to put out hope that the Big 10 will come calling. However, first and foremost, Notre Dame will always be the Big 10's highest priority.

The Big 10 has more traditional and great venues than the Big 12.

Not even a close call.

Next year, Michigan vs Nebraska. I am calling Gameday on that one and Desmond Heisman can make himself look stupid once again. Especially when he has his take on why Dennard is so much faster than Taylor.

Depending on how the season finishes, I can totally see Gameday at NU for tOSU.

Yes, because Nebraska NEVER got Texas recruits when we were in the Big 8 and we didn't play any games in Texas. Gill, McCant, A. Taylor, A. Graham, O. McFarlin, E. Warfield, B. Thomas, L. Pete, etc, etc, etc must have grown up elsewhere. We can only HOPE to be the old Nebraska.

Besides, ALL of our games will be on TV now, their friends and families will be able to catch all games thanks to the Big 10 network, and no thanks to tu's obsession with Bevo TV. Won't have to worry about a game not being regionally televised or on PPV.

Maybe, but Tex@$$ will have to learn to play well with others and not try to dicate policy before the Big 10 will ask (see Big 12 formation/Pac 16 talks).

Doesn't everybody want to come to Texas?

Um, no. :LOLtartar There are what 20-25 million people living in Texas, and over 2 billion through out the rest of the world. So, I would say no.

The big 10 already did go calling, and Texas gave them a list of demands and told them they had to bring the other Texas schools with them.

These Texas clowns can spin it any way they want. 5-10 years down the line when some other conference is dealing with Texas and the big 12 south tag alongs running their league (I'm looking at you pac-10) we'll simply nod and think "man am I glad we don't have to deal with that mess anymore."

all those clowns writing for the Texas rags... that are as objective and delusional as Saddam Husein's propaganda minister... Well they'll still be trying to explain how their stuff doesn't stink, even when they are neck deep in it.

i think the whole country saw what a bunch of aholes UTerus is... no respectable conference is gonna put up with their shyt. they are better off independent anyway. why would they want a rigorous B10 schedule when they can have 9 home games a year and play the north texas academy for the armless every week? they are giant pu$$ies, and they know it. the best home game they'll have to offer recruits next year is missouri or Ksux...yawn. i think if anyone's gonna have trouble recruiting texass, it's texass. what 5 star recruit is going to want to play a slate of cream puffs? the best players want to play the best, that will be BIG10 or <cough> sec schools.
